The Fallout Over Fallout: Which Version is Superior?

Kris Erickson writes:

"While console fanboys squabble over who has the "gimped" port of Fallout 3, the real story is how fantastic the game looks on a capable gaming PC. With anything even approaching the recommended system requirements (Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Geforce 8800) Fallout 3 looks lightyears better than it does on either of the consoles. Textures are vibrant and contain detailed bumps and crevices. The draw distance extends ridiculously far, and the wasteland is littered with more objects, bushes, and wildlife than the console counterparts."

So now we have to contend with not only PS3 and 360 fanboys, but mutant behemoth PC fanboys as well? I'm going to prepare my bomb shelter.

ChampIDC6399d ago

Well, in terms if capabilities, the PC version will always be superior, but it tends to be a lot nicer playing games from a couch instead of a computer chair. That's where the consoles can shine.

mabreu6399d ago

PC will always be better than console's of any multi-platform game. That's why I don't give a sh!t about graphic comparisons. PC will always be better.

Exclusive console games, however, can look as good or better than PC graphics because of the standard hardware architecture.

kevnb6399d ago

why wouldn't you be able to?

Pain6399d ago

the version that i buy that's what version.

ChampIDC6399d ago

Playing a PC from a couch takes some computer knowhow, which most people don't have.

TheIneffableBob6399d ago

lol, no.
It's as easy as hooking up a console to a TV.

Just plug in your computer to the power outlet, plug the VGA or DVI or HDMI cable into your HDTV, hook up some speakers, then all you have to do after that is adjust the resolution to 720p or 1080p.

PC is always going to be best. The devs can be as "lazy" as they like on PC and all it will affect is the system requirements. Any problems like aliasing, screen tearing, low resolution, draw distance can be remedied with a faster graphics card. Anything that can run well on a console can run better on a PC. If Killzone 2's assets were transferred to a PC-based engine your average desktop PC could run it better than the PS3 ever could. They wouldn't even need to optimise the engine for PC that much.

gabeh10186399d ago

PC gaming being the best is an opinion. A fact is saying they will always have the best visuals, but then again you should because you usually spend more than double of what a console costs.

PC gaming usually stands out the most with FPS's and RTS games.

thor6399d ago

Well I would say, that putting cost aside (remember that most people have a PC _anyway_ to do other stuff), PC is capable of everything consoles are. In fact, I really hate that consoles are becoming more like PCs (less split-screen than there used to be, installs, patches etc.) - why can't they just develop the game for PC in that case and I can enjoy it with better visuals? Consoles are losing their advantages. I think next gen we are going to see consoles that are capable of word processing, printing, e-mail and such. Why then, can't I just buy a PC and play the games on that? Because they are stealing your money and want all the added DRM benefits that consoles bring, by making exclusive games for a custom PC. If every PC had standard bluetooth controllers and you can hook it up to your TV with HDMI, it would effectively BE a console.

pansenbaer6399d ago

Actually, the PS3 can print :)

Hellsvacancy6399d ago

I dont own an 360 so i wont be buyin Fallout 3 for that,

And my laptop just isnt nowhere near powerfull enough to play (to give u an idea it barely runs Hitman Blood Money) so i wont b buyin Fallout 3 for that

But i do own a Ps3 - Bit of a no-brainer if u ask me

creeping judas6399d ago

I dont really care if i have an inferior version to another consolo or PC version. im having so much fun with this game to really care if the other console or PC has better graphics then my game!!!

Darkseider6399d ago

make me wonder if the display AND the PS3 are setup right. It reminds me a lot of the whole Assassin's Creed fiasco a while back.

machete squad steve6399d ago (Edited 6399d ago )

in those shots, the ps3 looks a lot better

Darkseider6399d ago

for someone to get some screens with a properly adjusted HDTV and PS3 set correctly via HDMI. Something just doesn't look right at all. I have to wait until next week to get my copy so if anyone has the time it would be appreciated.

Ju6399d ago

Yes, actually, I was thinking the same...grmmm...ground texture...and whats with the shots with the depth of field in the console version vs. none on the PC. So, these are different shots, no ?

tristanmike6399d ago

Now, I'm not a raging fanboi, but I do care about how my version compares to other versions, however, these pictures do look skewed. The images of the 360 and PS3 looks like someone needs to up the brightness on their TV's. The pictures seem to get darker as they move from the PC to the 360 to finally the PS3. Was the PC version being played on a big screen HDTV or a monitor ? Where they using the same display for all three versions or just one of them ? Either way, did they bother making any adjustments to their displays settings to try and bring the images closer together ?

Anyway, I hope Bethesda fix the bugs that plague all systems.

UnwanteDreamz6399d ago (Edited 6399d ago )

Anyone who is really playing this game can tell you that the position of the camera and the time of day effect the visuals you receive in this game. EXAMPLE: When you look at someone who is facing away from a light source their image is darkened and the details in their faces go away.

I look at the screens and I can tell you for a fact that the X360 and PS3 were not taken in the same place, same time of day, or from the same angle as the PC version. If you play this game you know that this has a great effect on what you are seeing, more so than in other titles I have played. I know the PC has better visuals but I can tell you that the game I am playing at home on my PS3 looks better than those crap screens./

I CAN PROVE IT

You can see for your self in the shots of the sheriff. He has light hitting him on the left side of the pic. The light is reflecting off of his badge/star so much you can't tell there are letters on it. Now notice that on the 360 and PS3 version there is no light source coming from that direction. I call BS!

Also worth mentioning on the sheriff shots is the fact that they took these screens while engaged in a conversation. I know this because that is the only time the backgroung blurs like that. Also you can see the characters mouth is moving. Only does that during the animated conversations. The PC screen is taken while the player is just looking at the sheriff and not speaking to him. Notice the name of the caracter is displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screens on the PS3 and 360.

Would be nice if they had New Vegas ready as well, especially because of the show.

Hopefully this doesn't have the same performance issues as Oblivion Remastered.

cloganart119d ago

I haven't seen anything on these performance issues? What's been going on?

walken7118d ago

Probably the Unreal Engine issues, I skipped it for that reason.

Snookies12120d ago (Edited 120d ago )

Throw in all the DLC as well, like Oblivion and I'll definitely bite. I recall having one trophy left to unlock on the PS3 version with 100+ hours in my save. When my save file got corrupted, lol. Very sad day.

To be fair though, Bethesda was trash at Playstation ports anyway.

Michiel1989119d ago

all devs sucked at porting to ps3 for the first like 3 years because no one had experience with the cell architecture. Even 1st party took a long while to get proficient with it, the difference between uncharted 1 and 3 is massive for example.

Extermin8or3_119d ago

Oh oh oh I can do this too. GTA 7 will be made at some point in the future. Fallout 5 will enter development in the future too

jznrpg119d ago

Everyone there should know most gamers want New Vegas and Morrowind more than anything.

Christopher119d ago

Which is why we won't get them. Gotta keep floating "support this one and it might happen".

BlaqMagiq1119d ago

Can't wait. Won't have to go back to my PS3 to play this when it comes out.

Fallout 3 remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2 is what we deserve, not the worst Fallout game

Fallout Day's disappointing news that Fallout 4 is coming to Switch 2 is a shame, as this 17-year-old entry is more deserving of a new port.

Why exactly do you think you deserve it??

Phoenix76191d ago

Fallout 4 isn't the worst game in the franchise. It's either Fallout 76 or Fallout BOS that's the worst.

gigoran8191d ago

PC and all other modern consoles never got a remaster of 3, but obviously the switch 2 was the tipping point to make it a reality... ahuh

1nsomniac191d ago

Meh, I thought 3 was garbage. I'm not a great fan of the franchise to be fair. They're like B-Movie films, really shallow and janky. 4 was definitely one of the better ones though.

UltimateOwnage190d ago

So the article makes a snippy entitled statement and acts like that is going to encourage a publisher to give them what they want. Okay.

Give us FO3 with all the dlc remastered like ESO. Load times faster, quality of life improvements, gun play improvements

I believe it shouldn't just be graphical they should make improvements where they can to make the game better. A simple face lift isn't what's needed

ZeekQuattro379d ago

Still my favorite one. I remember getting a digital copy of FO3 when I got FO4(XBO). It was nice to finally play a stable version of the game. Then when I got a Series S it was an even better expierence. Quick resume and FPS boost made it feel like a whole new game. Updated gunplay would be very welcome though. One of the few things FO4 did better.
