Fallout 3: Oblivion Re-Dux?

Grant Dent of SavedByATowel writes:

"I haven't played the game nearly enough to even begin to give a full-fledged review (I've barely begun to scratch the surface of the single-player plot), but I wanted to spend some time and comment on something that I think hasn't gotten nearly enough traction on other gaming sites: just how similar Fallout 3 and Oblivion feel."

I'm honestly not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm so pumped for Fallout 3 right now, but honestly, I didn't like Oblivion at all. On the PC it was alright, but exploring "Generic Cave #29" got old after so long. I eventually picked up the GOTY edition on 360 for cheap, but that didn't sweeten the experience... it actually made it worse, because shooting the bow was so difficult with sticks.

I didn't sink too much time into Oblivion so maybe Fallout won't have a huge about of deja vu for me. At least, I can only hope so.

outlawlife6412d ago

i was hoping it would differ from oblivion more because as good a game as oblivion was it was very "bloated" and as a player who isn't hardcore into rpgs i found it very difficult to get into

but whatever, i'm busy with fable and will be for a while then onto gears

maybe i'll rent this at some point in the future and try it but from what i've seen it is "too oblivion" for my tastes

Horny6412d ago (Edited 6412d ago )

exactly how I feel,
Im not into rpgs that much, oblivion required to much of my time.

ravinash6412d ago

oblivion was good, but it lost it for me when I got to the part of the game where I had to go round each town and close the gate out side each of them, By that stage each gate felt exactly the same and my character was powerful enough that there was no real challenge, so it was getting too repetitive.

I'm looking forward till Fallout3, I just hope the game has different environment to make the game varied enough and a story will keep pulling you along.

vhero6412d ago

then your in trouble this is very oblivion like in the way it plays you would swear you were playing the same game but in the future with future weapons/enemys. The game is in fact more eldar scrolls than fallout which is a shame but dont get me wrong it doesnt stop it being a good game its worth a 8.9/10 easily.

xaphanze6412d ago

I LOVED Oblivion and if this is very similar then I'm more than happy.

wicked6412d ago

I'm with you, I loved Oblivion. Spent over 200 hours in that game. Fallout 3 is already ordered

titntin6412d ago

Then prepare to be happy. I'm 50 hours in and loving every second of it.

Of course the game has the same engine, so there's a certain familiarity if your used to oblivion. But the combat is not even remotely the same and feels rewarding and cool. the VARS system is excellent and makes this far more than a standard FPS shooter. I tend to take cover recharge so I can always use vars to take out enemies. The kind of 'bloody mess' you leave your opponent in is never short of gratifying, and its fun to try and blow their head off in a certian direction and get it to land on a certain target in slow mo... I don't think I'll ever tire of it.

Like Oblivion, its a slow paced fully open world. If you simply want to wander around and see what you find, you can do it for countless hours and discover some great places. There's a million side quests and most are fun and all of them can be done in different ways with varying results depending on your mood or disposition.

In a year with so many brilliant games, this is my most compelling of the year so far, and while those who normally play FPS titles will bore of the pace and openness of the world, those who appreciated the joys of Oblivion's open world approach will absolutely love this.

spandexxking6412d ago

thank you tintin thats what i needed to hear. oblivion with a better combat system.

wallace10006411d ago

Totally agree! Oblivion was awesome, i just wish they had kept the combat system turn based like Fallout 2. Although i have seen VATS in action and it has promise, i will just have to buy the game and try it out :-)

Like most of you, I do agree that I myself did get bored with Oblivion. It started off great, but I don't have the time to spend getting that much involve with the game, yet I really didn't enjoy the medieval theme of Oblivion. Yet, I am amped up of playing Fallout 3 because of the post apocalyptic setting, big fan of the setting. Even if I do get bored, or don't have time, at least I have one game that I can play for along time shooting huge crabs or mutants. :)

Tony P6412d ago

But the game looks ok. I spent many hours > days> months with Oblivion (mods) and that was nice. I hope Fallout has less generic dungeon crawling than Oblivion did like Cheeseknight mentioned and none of that level scaling crap which makes leveling near pointless. I'm also a bit leery of VATS which, from the videos, seems like the 'I win' button in practice.

riddlesticks6412d ago

yeh that level scaling annoyed me in oblivion, you never really felt like you were unbelievably powerful... which would have been nice

but it has been confirmed that fallout 3 dosen't have this feature.

Would be nice if they had New Vegas ready as well, especially because of the show.

Hopefully this doesn't have the same performance issues as Oblivion Remastered.

cloganart127d ago

I haven't seen anything on these performance issues? What's been going on?

walken7126d ago

Probably the Unreal Engine issues, I skipped it for that reason.

Snookies12127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

Throw in all the DLC as well, like Oblivion and I'll definitely bite. I recall having one trophy left to unlock on the PS3 version with 100+ hours in my save. When my save file got corrupted, lol. Very sad day.

To be fair though, Bethesda was trash at Playstation ports anyway.

Michiel1989127d ago

all devs sucked at porting to ps3 for the first like 3 years because no one had experience with the cell architecture. Even 1st party took a long while to get proficient with it, the difference between uncharted 1 and 3 is massive for example.

Extermin8or3_127d ago

Oh oh oh I can do this too. GTA 7 will be made at some point in the future. Fallout 5 will enter development in the future too

jznrpg127d ago

Everyone there should know most gamers want New Vegas and Morrowind more than anything.

Christopher127d ago

Which is why we won't get them. Gotta keep floating "support this one and it might happen".

BlaqMagiq1127d ago

Can't wait. Won't have to go back to my PS3 to play this when it comes out.

Fallout 3 remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2 is what we deserve, not the worst Fallout game

Fallout Day's disappointing news that Fallout 4 is coming to Switch 2 is a shame, as this 17-year-old entry is more deserving of a new port.

jambola199d ago

Why exactly do you think you deserve it??

Phoenix76199d ago

Fallout 4 isn't the worst game in the franchise. It's either Fallout 76 or Fallout BOS that's the worst.

gigoran8199d ago

PC and all other modern consoles never got a remaster of 3, but obviously the switch 2 was the tipping point to make it a reality... ahuh

1nsomniac198d ago

Meh, I thought 3 was garbage. I'm not a great fan of the franchise to be fair. They're like B-Movie films, really shallow and janky. 4 was definitely one of the better ones though.

UltimateOwnage198d ago

So the article makes a snippy entitled statement and acts like that is going to encourage a publisher to give them what they want. Okay.

Give us FO3 with all the dlc remastered like ESO. Load times faster, quality of life improvements, gun play improvements

I believe it shouldn't just be graphical they should make improvements where they can to make the game better. A simple face lift isn't what's needed

ZeekQuattro386d ago

Still my favorite one. I remember getting a digital copy of FO3 when I got FO4(XBO). It was nice to finally play a stable version of the game. Then when I got a Series S it was an even better expierence. Quick resume and FPS boost made it feel like a whole new game. Updated gunplay would be very welcome though. One of the few things FO4 did better.
