Sony’s E3 Format Really Let Them Down

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "By all accounts Sony should have had a slam dunk at E3 2018. Their games were first in the class, with major titles coming from both their first party studios and third-party partners, many of which are some of the most anticipated games of our time. Yet, the dropped the ball – with a E3 showcase that failed to live up to not only their own previous presentations but also made some of the biggest games of all of E3 feel like afterthoughts, thrown in just to fill in the time till it was time to move onto the next thing. So while Sony had a lot to show, they did so in probably the worst way possible."

Great games showing but horrible execution. They need to go back to the previous E3 format.

Chaosdreams2892d ago

100% agreed. That or somehow find a way to avoid a 15m intermission. It felt like watching t.v. Where the commercials kick in way to soon and stay far too long.

Sgt_Slaughter2892d ago

Apparently they were supposed to do that multiple times, but after the flack from the first time they axed it. It's probably why the conference seemed to end abruptly and shorter than their usual time

kneon2892d ago

The intermission was just weird. And it happened because they made people move from one venue to another, that just makes no sense to me.

Omnislashver362892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

Disagree entirely. I thought the presentation was masterful and it left a giant impact on me. Not only a good showing, but entirely one of the best showing of all E3s, period.

No Way2891d ago (Edited 2891d ago )

... left a giant impact on you? Oooooooooookay. It would have been cool to be there and walk to them. But from a viewers point, it was terrible to watch from home.

Muzikguy2892d ago

I disagree. People need to stop worrying about how things got done and just be happy they got something done. If it was the same format people would’ve been complaining about that too. What they did was fine. It was different and that’s ok. I’m glad I don’t get all riled up over such petty things

Omnislashver362892d ago

Same, this was one of the best E3s of all time in my book, no idea where they're getting this hyperbole of a terrible format. It's hipster and pedantic as all get out.

Ashlen2892d ago

I can't disagree. I don't know why they thought shuffling people from one building to another was a good idea.

And they showed good games, but they had so many more they could have shown like Concrete Genie, Spyro and Dreams.plus they had a ton of VR games they didn't show on stage. And they could have gotten a bunch of third party exclusives Kiwami 2 and Fist of the North Star on stage among others.

I'm not sure why they chose to put in such a half effort, they had way more games than they showed.

Muzikguy2892d ago

That’s a good problem not a bad one. Also, there are more shows than E3

Ashlen2892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

@Muzikguy

Those are all games they showed at E3 though.

I can understand not showing games to save for other shows. But if your going to show the games at E3 in other E3 interviews why not put it on the big stage? They can still have the developer interviews with the games, that's what they have done in the past.

Muzikguy2892d ago

E3 hasn’t been their big stage for some time now. I think they still did a decent job. Some companies save things for later instead of blowing their load all at once. (No pun intended). Maybe they could’ve done things a little better or different but it wasn’t bad and I’m not going to criticize them for it

Ashlen2892d ago

Relax man, it's constructive criticism.

The show wasn't bad, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been better.

IamTylerDurden12892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

Sony just has a different style, the don't pad their shows like other Publishers. They feel like E3 is reserved for important games. Microsoft was at the other end of the spectrum, an hour and 39 min but they had at least 3 commercials for already released Microsoft games, a long winded Game Pass segment, and a few small games that shouldn't of made the show. Pick your poison.

Sony is a different animal and i love it. Not one time during the conference did Sony utter the words "EXCLUSIVE" nor did they boast or brag. They didn't pad the numbers or the time either. Sony operates with class and respect. Does it hurt them at times? Definitely. Do i want them to have a little more ruthlessness and crude American business strategy for their own economic benefit? Kind of. But do i still prefer their way of business over the likes of.........other companies. Without a doubt.

Muzikguy2892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

Constructive? Ok. Sounds more like you’re basing it off something you hoped it was going to be or their past shows. Not judging though 🤷🏼‍♂️

Omegasyde2892d ago

Completely agree.

No big surprises from Sony, which is Odd.

I am starting to think Sony is pushing more game announcements at PSX vs E3

Ashlen2892d ago

Huh, I guess it's true if you say anything other than Sony is the best (even when it's not actually negative) you get downvoted. Heh there is a certain site moderator who if they see this will probably fall out of their chair laughing knowing how prefer Sony...

Oh well, knock yourselves out downvote away!

Rude-ro2892d ago

Agreed. Luckily, with the quality of titiles that they have released, I’m not worried...
But I fully agree, go back to one stage, no “intermission” after one game showing.
I get the attempt, good for them, but let’s not repeat.
I do not think it would have been as bad if the rest of e3 was blah... but it was, and Sony’s presence of their e3 was off as well.
Plus, the sharks in the water of Microsoft’s media is looking for anything to chomp on.. do not feed the sharks Sony.

IamTylerDurden12892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

The only real problem was the intermission after TLoU. I personally enjoyed everything, i like Sid Shuman and i thought it was an innovative idea for those in attendance. But once Tsushima gameplay started it was much more consistent. Most of the second half was just rapid fire trailers. The early portion was rocky in terms of presentation style, but it settled down afterwards.

This article is ridiculous. In no way did TLoU and Ghost of Tsushima seem feel like after thoughts due to the setup of the conference. The Last of Us II and Ghost of Tsushima were the best thing shown at E3 period.

I'm just going to say one thing and it's the only thing I care about... GAMES

chrisx2893d ago

did the games really let you down?

AspiringProGenji2893d ago

No but the show was still not good enough. They may have their reasons but still.

2892d ago
Muzikguy2892d ago (Edited 2892d ago )

Better how? They did what they wanted and it doesn’t matter. People will still find a fault

DarXyde2892d ago

I did say before that it was unlikely they would show much that would "beat" Microsoft's conference since we knew about most of the games already (though, to be fair, Nier has no effect on most people since they've already beaten it; also, personally, Ninja Theory acquisition isn't a huge deal since I've not really liked their work; I'm one of the weirdos that didn't care for Hellblade. Great studio for most, so I see the appeal). I don't think Sony needed to prove much either though. They showed gameplay for Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Part II, and Death Stranding which was what I really wanted to see. Also got to see Resident Evil 2. I think Microsoft had a better show, but I also found the most exciting aspects multiplatform. The bar was set in a different place from Sony too since they needed to prove the most. I'm not sure they did well there since most of the projects shown are available elsewhere.

yellowgerbil2892d ago

they sure did. They teased Dreams like 6 times with no payoff. The only way you constantly cut to 5 second Dreams clips between trailers is if the show was going to end with a HUGE Dreams announcement. The show should of ended with Dreams getting a damn release date and all PS+ members being able to play it immediately in a beta.
Also NONE OF THE GAMES HAD RELEASE DATES. The number one defense I've heard is well they wanted to "focus on games coming in the near future" Yet we still have no release date for TLOU, DEATH STRANDING (which is a damn walking sim now) and Ghost
The format was terrible but the content was as well

kneon2892d ago

I'd really like to know what is going on with Dreams, wasn't it shown at the PS4 announcement? We've been waiting a long time and still not much info.

yellowgerbil2892d ago

Yeah it was one of the very first games shown back at the ps4 reveal. It sold me on this gen and 5 years later am still waiting for it. They announced a beta way back in 2016 and we still just have a vague future time to experience it.

Elda2892d ago

Nope & that's what was important hands down.

Rimeskeem2893d ago

If the format is the biggest letdown then you know its a decent conference.

Relientk772892d ago

I hope they never use that format again.

Also an intermission seriously?

Rimeskeem2892d ago

The intermission was a bit weird but I'm glad that they used it for Destiny 2 and CoD so that the main focus was on exclusives.

-Foxtrot2892d ago

I don't see why in the intermission they didn't just show every single third party multiplatform trailer that was shown at Microsoft's E3 and throw some indie games in there if they needed.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot14d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose15d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE15d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername14d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy15d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde14d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8614d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8614d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle15d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
