Why Valve Needs a “Vive 2” to Re-Spark VR Developers’ Innovation

VR gaming is here to stay, and evolve. However, that evolution may be moving at too fast of a rate for companies to keep up.

Vive 2 must be fully wireless, 120fps min, full field of view and have 4K ghosting-free screens on both eyes ans last but not least, be less than 800 bucks.

ApocalypseShadow3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

I can see that. With the option to plug it into a pc,have at least 4-6 hours battery life wireless gaming depending on the game, backup battery switch over option after quick save of your game, augmented reality cameras built in or option to attach them for ar/vr gaming and ability to have vr sync with 2 hmd headsets in the same room for 2 player gaming with 2 computers and 4 sensors.

Don't know if it would hit less than $800,but I can see yours with the addition of mine.

I would say you are pretty close to what it needs to draw people in. A $500 price tag for that would make a huge difference too.

I am not sure the tech is quite their for that yet, at that price tag though, but I think you hit the specs pretty good.
Resolution wise, you could probably get down to about 1440p/1600p, but no less. 1080p shows. I would prefer 4k, but we are a good 5 years away from video cards handling 4k at 120fps with graphics settings maxed, and I doubt people will want to turn things down to Low/Medium to get the additional frame rate.

So in my view, 7-10 years for this to REALLY be a killer app AND affordable at the specs YOU mentioned. At the specs I mentioned, it will happen sooner, but we really need 4k IMO for this to be seamless.

there just needs to be a way to support locomotion, dont get me wrong, theres solutions, but too pricey, some are getting kickstarted....

TheDivine3064d ago

Tilt the thumbstick to move seems to work in every game I play. Not sure what you mean. Do you really think there's no movement in vr games?

pwnsause_returns3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

theres movement, but it seems pretty unnatural. played farpoint the other day with the aim controller, and as awesome and immersive as it was, i felt that something was missing, walking with VR with a joystick can be a nausiating experience. Dont get me wrong Im not hating on VR, VR is goddamn amazing, but damn dude....

i can see why you have these third party companies like bethesda using the point to move method, which is pretty crappy as well. hopefully this can be rectified when sony releases a PSVR 2 next gen. Glad that we finally have the Tech though, eventually it will get perfected.

bolimekurac3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

we are 4 years away from true vr, next gen consoles will have it right, light weight, 299$max , no external sensors , screen door effect fixed, full field of view, wireless with option to plug in. higher res and fps. all that is doable right now, they have some amazing vr ar tech that we dont get to play with. in 4 years we will have what i described and at 299. and if sony or ms want this to be the next big thing and not the next fad then they have to have full fledged games as well and maybe a 199 pricepoint and rely on the games and services to recoup the cost. the world is not jumping in at 499 plus the console and games
a million to 3 million sold will not cut it.. for this to be mainstream it needs to hit 20 mill to make a scratch and about to 40mill to make a dent in gaming

Silly gameAr3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Gotta start somewhere, Even when VR goes "mainstream' can't ignore the ones that took the chance on it when everyone was crapping on it. Kind of sad that VR has to be mainstream for some people to respect where it is now rather it's on PC or consoles.

bolimekurac3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

its not that we dont respect it, it just wont go anywhere with what we have today, we want it to succeed but yeah it needs to start somewhere .to me its something that shouldnt be brought out half assed to the public, it already has its issues being something you wear and singling out gaming because your doing so solo. it needs to come back with all the goodies and ready tog o so the public takes it more seriously

Profchaos3065d ago

PSvr is already solid it works amazing on current gen overall sure it's not as powerful as the vive but it's a impressive system already and it's consumer friendly overall compared to the Vives requirements

_LarZen_3065d ago

I’m gonna buy VR for my PC. But I’m waiting for a newer version from either Oculus or HTC.

Lilrizky3065d ago

mainstream VR has only been out for a year. How fast do you expect it evolve?

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
