I disagree. Although the PS4 has done an incredible job this year overall, it had no noteworthy exclusives in Q4 this year. It's best games were Q1-Q3. It also couldn't hold onto it's title as most powerful console in Q4 either.

Cyborgg3047d ago (Edited 3047d ago )

So which console then? I say Nintendo and PS4 😁

AspiringProGenji3047d ago (Edited 3047d ago )

Define noteworthy... ill wait!

GT sport is noteworthy enough, and Uncharted lost legacy had a lot of content. TLL was a standaone game too mind you..l

As for Frozen wilds. It had length as well. Considering people made a big deal about W3 DLCs and arguing whether they deserve to be GOTY nominees, I guess Frozen Wilds could be considered its own as well

michellelynn09763046d ago

I know. They had nothing for the latter part. Hopefully that will change in 2018.

Aenea3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

The Switch only had noteworthy exclusives in Q1 and Q4 (or was it Q3 when Mario released), the most powerful console didn't have any noteworthy exclusives this year, perhaps Cuphead as a runner up....

Also GT Sport released in Q4, also plenty of VR content, how about Skyrim VR and Doom VR? Those are console exclusive to the PS4....

UltraNova3046d ago

So having a shit load of games for 3/4 of the year and some "not so noteworthy" ones in Q4 is reason enough to put them 2nd?

Forgive me but did sony release the ps4 pro in 2017 alongside xb1x and they lost the power crown in a straight up fight? Btw since when power was the deciding factor on who won a year, you know after total console/game sales and actual amount of good exclusive games released?

Man...that was perhaps the most delusional comment of 2017...well done JMRamee!

Godmars2903046d ago

When has "most powerful" ever been a major point, much less qualifier for winning any finical - sales - quarter?

It only was ever a default thing because the XB1 launched under-powered in comparison, with the Xbox camp more than MS themselves touting cloud distribution as something which would more than compensate. Then the XBX became a thing, and suddenly most powerful has become the only thing that matters.

FFS, can you please just give it up already?

Markusb333046d ago

Not sure the power narrative was important since the ps4 outsold the most powerful console during its launch month. So seems that power is irrelevant when compared to sales. Switch took some npd months another company didn't take any this whole year.

Rude-ro3046d ago

😂”most powerful console” with two upgrades and only putting make up on Xbox One games... 4 years into a gen... without one single new AAA 1st party game this whole gen.
I think it is way too late to care about how much power is pushing this gens games... or lack there of if you only game on Xbox.

JMyers3046d ago

So because "noteworthy exclusives" were not released in Q4, the PS4 didn't win 2017? What was released on the Xbox One all year and in Q4? In fact the company with the most powerful console have no "noteworthy exclusives"

GT Sport, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Frozen Wilds expansion? Vs Forza, PUBG and Early Access? I have left out Indies, but the story here is the same. More on PS4.

darthv723046d ago

So... are games ONLY allowed to be purchased within their particular quarter in order to count for something?

well damn... I been doing it wrong all along. I buy games at my leisure. So when i bought sunset overdrive, Ryse, The order... those were all new to me even though to others they are old hat. Good to know that in order to be part of the "in crowd" i have to buy my games right when they come out.

showtimefolks3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

JMRamee

in my opinion that's a positive why push all your games against other AAA titles whe n Q1-Q3 are available. just because a game came out in march doesn't mean it doesn't mean those games don't matter b q4

ps4 sold the most consoles(i think in 2017 world wide)
ps4 had the most diverse lineup
ps4 had the most exclusives

being most powerful doesn't have any benefits if you can't showcase your games on it

DialgaMarine3046d ago

Yup. The console that still managed to sell out during the holidays, despite being over 4 years old, only did so on hopes and dreams. Clearly these people weren’t buying the console for games.

Redlife2g3046d ago

So because of ONE weak quarter ps4 doesn't win? Must get cold living under that bridge..

Army_of_Darkness3046d ago

After horizon zero dawn, nier, gravity rush 2 along with psvr (finally got it and omg! Amazing!!) it's an automatic win for ps4 for me :)

Definitly PS4, their is reason ps4 number one selling console worldwide this year even after release of two console.
Even in NPD ps4 wins easily
Sales as of Nov(Jan-Nov end)
PS4: ~4.4m
SWI: ~3.4m
XB1: ~2.9m

BadElf3046d ago

I don't see sales as "winning". Never did. It all just comes down to opinion. Just because Tay Tay Swift had most album sales in 2017 doesnt mean she had the "best" music in 2017....again, its all just opinion.

I won though. ME. And all the other gamers like me...because I own all 3 systems.

iofhua3046d ago

Don't cite a forum that's not a legitimate source.

The Switch had sold a hell of a lot more than 3.4 million units by November. This article dated October 30th states that 7.63 million Switches had already been sold worldwide.
https://www.polygon.com/201...

I'm waiting for the final tally for 2017. We won't know until January.

littlezizu3045d ago

@iof it's NPD not worldwide.

In Worldwide Sony reached 10 million in 6 months june 2017 they were 60 and dec 3rd they were 70.3
Switch sold 10 million in 9months frm march 3rd to dec 7th. So PS4 winning worldwide. This data from sony and nintendo sales figure

FATAL1TY3046d ago

Overall Winner: PS4

honorable mention - Switch

Best Tech - Horizon Zero Dawn

Disappointment of the Year - Xbox one and MS

DarXyde3046d ago

Switch in my opinion.

There are strong games offered all around, but most are multiplatform and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Super Mario Odyssey are serious standouts. Got them for Christmas and Mario alone is fantastic.

If we're talking commercially, PS4. I can't complain about Q4 though. Sony has killed it this year overall, so I'm not sad. Cheers to a great 2018 lineup.

NoPeace_Walker3047d ago

Xbox and Nintendo Switch are winners 👍🏼 for me as those were the only consoles out of my 3 consoles that I had bought games for in Q4 2017.

Switch - Mario Odessey and Xenoblade 2

XB1X - Forza 7, Cuphead, Shadow of War, AC Origin, Wolfeinstein 2, COD WW2, PubG

JMRamee3047d ago

It's so weird that Q4 2017 was largely a fight between Xbox One and Switch. It was PS4 and Switch Q1-Q3, but PS4 must have just been content to sit things out at the end of the year.

Outside_ofthe_Box3047d ago

" PS4 must have just been content to sit things out at the end of the year. "

That's not how video game releases work lol

Aenea3046d ago

GT Sport, Skyrim VR and Doom VR were (console) exclusives for the PS4 in Q4 so I rather argue that...

TKCMuzzer3046d ago

Yet PS4 will shift more hardware, how come? Oh yes, they have games released through the year so even if you buy one in Q4 you will still have a larger choice of games.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

@JMRamee

PS4 Outsold Xbox One and Switch in November and Switch outsold PS4 and Xbox One in September and October. Xbox has been second or dead last for the last 4 months.

sprinterboy3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

Sony let there 3rd party games battle it out over Xmas while having great exclusives through out the yr, great marketing technique imo, although Sony do release exclusives during Xmas too, gts, horizon dlc and knack 2 as a example

Vizigoth043046d ago

You can probably save this article and use it again next year. Just change the date. Because you can almost bet Sony again will have it's Exclusives shine in the first several months of 2018 and let one or two slip into 4Q/Holiday 2018. Like always the big multiplats land there. This is Sony's tactic. Even Microsoft took note and and is releasing Sea of Thieves in March, subject to any change. What probably isn't mentioned here because it isn't public news yet and probably won't be until January, is how many PSVR units got sold through with the help of GTS, Skyrim VR, and Doom VFR. Not to mention Resident Evil 7's update/expansion.

No Zelda for Switch Peace Walker?

Kribwalker3047d ago

that would prolly be a quarter one or two purchase. I’d say definitely Nintendo and Xbox and the better exclusives to close out the year. sony has GTsport and knack 2, Ms had Forza 7, Super Luckys Tale, PubG, Cuphead, and the launch of the onex. Nintendo had Mario Odyssey, third party support that was missing last gen (doom, skyrim, fifa etc) , Xenoblade 2 and more.
Definitely
1)Switch
2) Xbox
3)PS4

ApocalypseShadow3047d ago (Edited 3047d ago )

So what you're saying krib is that all the games Sony released for the **whole year** that parents, spouses, and gamers saved for, don't count during the holiday season. Or that VR or its games don't count either because. ..what?

Glad you're not being biased about it and only count two games from Sony that released way before the holiday./S

But count Microsoft and Nintendo games that released not even near the holidays.

The Wood3046d ago

That's krib for ya. . 😂😂

I guess closing the metric to last quarter at least gives ms and it's fans something to champion. Nintendo came in kinda late but still done well. Sony coasted but still released games prior like they usually do. Good final quarter for gamers

Kribwalker3046d ago

@apocalypse
No what i’m saying is the article is discussing the 4th qtr of the year, so i’m talking about the 4th qtr. October to Dec. I put in knack 2 because september is typically counted in the fall holiday release schedule.

UCForce3045d ago (Edited 3045d ago )

You ,@kribwalker and @XMessiah23x @JMRamee @NoPeace_Walker Really ? Now look here, PS4 have about 70 million units around the globe this year. Xbox and Switch have good battle, but they didn’t win the war. Next year, 2018 is going to be for Sony and these two gonna be ready for what is coming, because right now Sony got bigger gun. All their Sony First Party devs from small and big have the talents that surprise people from every direction. Sony won the most for being variety of all different gamer types.

michellelynn09763046d ago

Mario and Rabbids, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade, Splatoon 2 Battle Chef Bregade, Golf Story, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Kart 8 DX. Only two great games? You must be thinking of the ps4.

3046d ago
Minimox163046d ago

@ WasimAkram16

also .Hack Collection, Danganronpa 1•2 Reload, YS Origin, PaRappa the Rapper, PaRappa the Rapper, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, Samurai Warriors: Spirit Of Sanada, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Gundam Versus.

Aenea3046d ago

Ehh, you're padding the Xbox list with multiplats, games of which I bought for my PS4 Pro, so my PS4 Pro had an excellent Q4! Also add in GT Sport, Skyrim VR and Doom VR and it seriously won over Xbox!

Xbox came in dead last in my opinion, did nothing all year and in Q4 just release more powerful hardware, that's it, oh and a few Indies and Forza which sold miserably....

Kribwalker3046d ago

welll according to most of you guys, those multiplatform don’t count as games, so in Q4 PS4 had no games, so how could they have won? And according to you, Forza sold miserably, based off of what? VGchartz?
because all of the real data we have suggest otherwise.
First, Forza 7 outsold GTSport Digitaly worldwide in october
https://www.superdataresear...
It also outsold GTsport in October in the biggest market in the world
https://venturebeat.com/201...

It Also made the Xbox top 10 in November’s NPD and GTsport was no where in sight.
https://venturebeat.com/201...

Now I know NPD doesn’t equal the world, but world wide digital sales do. And Forza bested GTsport there.

So if Forza 7 sold miserably with half the userbase then the PS4, what does that make GTsport? A game that sold a fraction of previous GT games.....A Flop?

What’s even funnier aenea is you bring up Skyrim and Doom VR and fail to mention how miserably they sold.......

Cyborgg3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

@Kribwalker

Frozen Wilds is better than every game Microsoft release in Q4 not to mention it takes 15 hours to complete that game.

Knushwood Butt3046d ago

As of Nov 4th a certain site has worldwide sales at

GT Sport - 1.3 mil after 3 weeks on the market
Forza 7 - 450 K after 6 weeks on the market

TKCMuzzer3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

A pointless discussion, Sony and Nintendo deliver all year round so there is no need to break it down into quarters. I can see why MS and its fan base would like to do that though.

By the way, PUGB, no one should be paying money for that product in its current state.

Revvin3046d ago

XBOX for me, only bought GT Sport for PS4 and I only got that because it was half price in the sale. Going forward I see me buying more on XBOX in 2018, I have the One X Scorpio Edition which means even third party games will almost certainly look better on that than my PS4 Pro.

JMyers3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

The only exclusives on that list are Forza 7 and Cuphead. PUBG is not even a game yet, and it's a broken mess. I guess full games like GT Sport and UC:LL do not count. And new IPs and exclusives in Q1, Q2 and Q3 don't count either. The PS4 has had over 10 exclusives this year, with most of them ranked 80 or more on Metacritic.

Nio, Nier, Yakuza 0, Crash, Horizon, MLB: The Show 17, Knack 2, Persona 5, Yakuza Kwami, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, GT Sport,...

I have not included niche Japanese games or any Indies

The Switch won the talk of the town for 2017. Microsoft came in roaring with the Xbox One X but its exclusive lineup sure is pitiful. Sony is somewhere else. Who knows.

Ricegum3046d ago

"Sony is somewhere else."

Yep, top. In a different league to Xbox. I'm glad to see Switch having a good year, proud owner of one now and I am thoroughly impressed.

Xbox One had another disappointing quarter, surprising considering they have just dropped a new £450 console.

3046d ago
Dragonscale3046d ago

Yeah Sony is in a league of their own. Scorpio did jack tbh.

Vizigoth043046d ago

"Sony is somewhere else. Who knows." Haha. To pretend to know nothing only exposes you. Sony has the install base that much you do know. And with that with games like COD and Fifa comes out even if it's not your style of game, PlayStation gets 50% or more of the market share easily. While exclusives like Uncharted 4 are nearing 10 million in less than 2 years is what keeps PlayStation gamers waiting patiently for the Loot of games coming in 2018.

70 million, do I say more ? ;)

michellelynn09763046d ago

Let's see if those numbers hold up and so? What has been their big seller? COD, not an exclusive.

Markusb333046d ago

Cod is everyones big seller every year for many years not sure what your trying to say. Still 70.6 million people made their choice.

Foxhound9223046d ago

Goddamnit, this is the argument of a 10 year old.

"Wahhh, a super popular, massive, annual multiplatform sold the most so all exclusives don't matter cuz they sold less..."

Do you even realize how dumb that logic sounds? Get a clue ffs!

Vizigoth043046d ago

Uncharted 4. Nearing 10 million in under 2 years. That's 14% of the install base. But factor in that PlayStation has multiple exclusives that have sold 1-2 million throughout the generation. Not just a few. Quality, Quantity, Variety and consistency is what you get for PlayStation. That is the truth.

3046d ago
PLAYWATCH763046d ago

You don't think PS4 install base lead will not hold up? You can't be serious.

UCForce3045d ago
