Microtransactions Are Hurting and Devaluing Video Games

VGChartz;s Taneli Palola: "All this just points to publishers testing the waters, gauging how much they can actually get away with before there start to be consequences for such monetization of premium games. Somehow we clearly haven't gotten there yet, since these practices seem to become more egregious on a yearly basis."

People must be buying it because they keep finding ways to shove it into modern games. Im not paying a dime for stuff that should be in there from the get go.. Incomplete ass games that need patches, take up tons of space, and beg for extra cash..

C-H-E-F3168d ago

Facts, I have a friend that won't buy a game for 60$ right, he waits until he can get it on sale for half initial retail or less. Then when he gets it spend hundreds of dollars on the games VC lOl... it's insane, like he literally just bought GTAV like 2 weeks ago for 29.99 cause he had it on the ps3 already and didn't want to buy it at full price and spent around 300$ on shark cards... I'm like BRUHHH!! your logic is so ignorant, he did the same with ghost recon. lOl people like him is the reason why people like us suffer from unfinished games.

InTheZoneAC3168d ago

I do the same for games that I would like but aren't must buys as they release, except for the microtransactions I don't touch those lol

HighlyDoubtful3168d ago

This just in.....the sky is blue.

agent45323167d ago

No, we should start demanding for a quality gaming experience. Yes, videogame is a business and yes game corporations is about making money. This is the only industry that people put up with mediocrity. On restaurants, the people complain and demand a quality experience. When it comes to theme parks people demand for a quality experience. In any industry people fight back except the gaming industry.

edeprez3168d ago

I'll buy your game if its good, maybe a dlc expansion if its worth it. I will not spend a dime on cosmetics, or buy more guns, armor, etc. People need to spend money on the things they want to see in the future, i know i do.

morganfell3168d ago

Actually people need to spend money on what they want. It's called freedom.

And an article from vgchartz discussing the evils of fan manipulation is a hypocritical joke.

Ittoittosai3168d ago

While it may be a hypocritical joke coming from vgchartz ita no less a sound statement.

morganfell3168d ago (Edited 3168d ago )

No it isn't a sound statement. People are purchasing because they want these items. You may not want them but you are not the majority of the public. People have such an issue understanding that their wants and desires are not even a spec compared to the larger public. And you cannot go by what people say. They will say one thing then do something else. It is what they do that matters and what they do is buy.

Regarding games the trend is moving away from DLC that truly harms games. Look at Ubisoft's recent decisions as one example.

MunchMiller003168d ago

Freedom should require a base IQ. At least this way, people with brains aren't stuck going along for the ride when stupid people throw their money at stupid crap like this.

morganfell3168d ago

"Freedom should require a base IQ."

So who determines that? See where that goes? And if people had a base IQ they wouldn't heed articles from a site run by lying fanboys with a history of deception and subterfuge.

LucasRuinedChildhood3168d ago

Only a very small minority of people actually buy micro-transactions. They just spend tons of money on them. I've been told by game developers that you can typically expect that around 1% of players will buy them. This is not the "larger public". Far more people out there dislike them, especially as they become more intrusive.

agent45323167d ago

Yeah right us gamers have made excuses for these gaming publishers for too long. That is why we lost free unlockables, mini games and map editors (map editors are an exclusive feature to PC gaming only).

Ittoittosai3115d ago

Yes it is a sounds statement. People never know what they want especially casuals. One year they want mobile games the next motion controllers the next MT and thats what these companies want, they dont want actual gaming consumers they want the same people who will spend 1$ on a mobile. MT are going to lead to a crash. The bubble is building right now on all platforms, Vavle being too hands off with steam, pubs like EA and activision craming MT and MP into games that dont need it and now loot boxes, basic gambling mechanics just to make more money

When the GTA Servers eventually go offline, think of all that micro dlc that will sit unused...

InTheZoneAC3168d ago

I wish people knew it hardly takes any time to join a few heists, completing just a few levels rather than the entire thing and you quickly build money. Sure it won't be as fast as buying a shark card but I've gotten lots and would have so much more if I kept playing.

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.

Cause they play NBA2k26, COD and gamepass

Fishy Fingers59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

3x less sales than Playstation.
3x less consoles sold than Playstation.

Per captita, it averages out that the same number of users are buying CDP games regardless of platform, no?

Bathyj58d ago

The exact same or possibly more because a series S, initial investment and effort to Port to Xbox consoles for a third of the return.

Simply not worth it

LMGk58d ago

“ Simply not worth it”

And yet, basically every game comes to Xbox.

NotoriousWhiz58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

A third is a pretty big number to be honest. Like would you rather make 15 million or 20 million? That's the difference that a third makes.

GamingSinceForever59d ago

Hey it’s ok. They are really impressed with XBOx’s new CEO so exclusivity is on the way. 😂

Loktai59d ago

Ok but I mean be logical ... modern PC, Switch, PS4 PS5 then you have XBOX, of all of those XBOX is probably only 10 percent... I mean, what do you expect? 10 percent increase in sales is still nothing to sneeze at, remember - this is CD projekt red and they sell a lot of software. 10 percent of their sales is probably what most studios DREAM of selling .... just playing devils advocate..... its easy to say LOL haha XBOX.... but.. I mean we know what it is at this point. I havent bought on since my xbox one X and before that I only used other peoples xboxes since the OG XBOX and stick with PC and Playstation and switch OLED, but .. I mean.... theres nothing WRONG with an xbox considering its just not the best - but they work fine. make no mistake.
