The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review

Michael from NoobFeed writes: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition is the same game that you know and love, but with additional bells and whistles that somehow make a perfect game even better. With a feature-rich companion app, true 4K visuals, buttery-smooth 60fps, and an extra save file, what's not to love?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition review - ChristCenteredGamer

CCG writes - "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition successfully takes one of Nintendo’s best titles and makes it look and run exponentially better than it ever has before. After playing this new version, it’s hard to think that I settled for such a worse-performing version all these years. "

I say this as an owner of a switch 2 officially now (got it finally last week). Thats all well and good, but lots of us were saying the switch was underpowered to begin with - then labeled as haters (why would a hater buy a device they hate?).
I loved BOTW on Switch but could never escape the feeling that despite how good, it just felt.... old... graphically.

Glad to see theres an elevated experience on the new switch 2... but the point still stands - imagine if Nintendo released an actual real console with the full power of the series x or ps5. then imagine what BOTW could look like. I wish Nintendo would do something like what MS did with series x/s - release a full proper console as the flagship, then have the switch as the portable scaled down option. They both play the same games, but the console would run the full blast version of the games. That would be a win in my book.

also like MS (and occasionally Sony), I wish Nintendo would release these upgrades for free. A new switch 2 game is already $80, and they're charging $18 to play a game you already own with better frame rates and resolution. thats almost as bad as them charging money for the "welcome tour" game, that literally just shows you the features of the switch. not a cheap system after purchase.

It's not free, but the upgrades are included in the Nintendo subscription service thingy.

@MrBaskerville

Which still means your paying for it.

…which is exactly what he just said - “it’s not free”.

As a Switch 1 & 2 owner, I feel conflicted with reviews for things like this; hard to not feel cynical. I feel these reviews should really focus scoring less on the core experience - we already have a judgement on that from 2017 - but rather more on its value. And given - by all appearances - that this is a poor value cash grab, the scoring should be pretty brutal. (And they really should have given permanent access to the upgrades when redeemed by NSO members. Would have helped spur NSO adoption & seen as a truly valuable perk, regardless of it being manufactured).

It's a Wii U game from 8 years back, & one some people have already bought twice. Asking them for even more money is poor form; especially when the biggest improvements come from effectively changing a couple flags in the backend to increase resolution and framerate. And not even including access to the expansions for those who don't have them, all these years later, is a truly poor call.

We have plenty of precedence, and numerous examples from other companies, that shows us these kinds of improvements should be free. Especially coming from the platform holder. It costs them practically nothing and is not just a goodwill gesture, but provides incentive to upgrade. Knowing you have a library of titles with upgrades/improvements which don't cost a penny make it easier for people to justify a console purchase in the first place. So Nintendo - one of the wealthiest companies in entertainment - charging for this when others don't feels awfully stingy.

They gave Odyssey a free upgrade. So we are to believe Nintendo truly thinks each app for each game is $10 worth of value? Given how few words of any review are dedicated to the feature, if brought up at all, drives home that this is not a marquee feature people are paying for. If they were so confident of its value, they should have patched the tech upgrades in for free & charged $10 per app on app stores.

The fact they didn't leads one to believe the likely answer is simply opting to take advantage of early adopters. With word being hardly any dev kits were sent out in advance, the launch lineup was left rather sparse. So early adopters looking for more than a game or two taking advantage of their pricey new system will likely, begrudgingly, throw $10 at these titles simply to have something.

I just feel like this shouldn't be accepted and normalized as much as it has been. Given hardly any pushback, I guess most are fine with it. I feel like we've primed Big N to fill gaps in their releases and Directs with paid res/FPS bumps, much like they did with Wii U ports, and continue to charge $20 for content upgrades (a la Kirby), as opposed to the $10 seen from companies like Sony for similar features. And if Nintendo keeps it up, it's hard to believe that 3rd party publishers won't be far behind.

Well our review mostly focused on what was new but I have to grade it as if someone is buying the Switch 2 version brand new as well and taking the game as a whole. Yes, with things like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet getting free upgrades that made a HUGE difference I do agree that it makes no sense why essentially the same thing wasn't done here as it's just a visual/performance boost plus a silly phone feature. Thanks for your comment and sharing your opinion on the review. I appreciate it.
