I personally dont mind waiting for system potentail. The PS2 and PS3 were this way. If Sony decides to become more casual, I feel that I dont trust the companny anymore. When they had the market to themselves they may boast that they do whats right for the consumer. Now that they arnt making as much as they like, they forget about us. I see many Hardcore Gamers leaving the brand.

The "Cell" is the marketing name used for the IBM designed Power PC technology used in the Playstation 3. The tech has been around for awhile, it was just altered for the PS3's use. The Cell is the result of the PowerPC evolution much like todays PC's are evolved versions of the old x86 CPU.

CELL is a super computer processor. Hope those who don't know about this, would know now. CELL 2, a much more powerful SCP was already developed and released on Server Blades for major companies and those that require the power of CELL. And guess whats in development? CELL3. I can tell you that CELL or CELL2 will most likely end up on PS4, and Sony will use a tougher graphic video card that will give 128 vertic pipelines and will not go at a very high cost. I'm assuming 450 US dollars tops, 400 minimum including Blu-ray. 600 US dollars was too much, 400ish is the max amount an average person would pay for a new generation console.

I couldn't find any sources for this so I see as a rumor, though it would make sense if it was an enhanced Cell design.

PS4 wont need millions in developement. Sony have done a smart thing by doing their homework for at least 2 generations in one go.

PS4 could be nothing more than 5 cell chips, (5 chips working together is alot more powerful than 5 chips working alone, 2 or 3GB of RAM, the latest perpose built GPU and a 10x BR with 200GB disc's. Work done.

Another good thing about this is if they wanted to they could probably go from saying Yes to stock in retail in less than a year depending on the situation.

Makes alot of sense, devs will know the cell and it should be able to keep up with the new MS CPU. As long as Sony nails the GPU and ram they could have an easier time with the ps4, maybe even put more money into the other components.

...without saying. This was just a given from the start. The Cell Processor was specifically designed so that you could easily link additional Cell Processors together and end up with an even more powerful machine. This is basically what large scientific organizations are doing with their own super computers based on the Cell Processor.

Sony never designed the Cell Process to just exist for 10 years in a game console. Sony's plan was to eventually displace Intel... so that the Cell Process would be the future processor for all of computing. Want an even more powerful machine? Just add a few more Cell Processors into the mix.

Eventually, the plan is to have Cell Processors in everything from cell phones to smart refrigerators... from game consoles to laptops... from home security systems to robotic vacuum cleaners. Ultimately, the goal is this... when your laptop needs more processing power, it can draw this additional computing power from the idle devices in your home (which would all be networked together)... in time, homes would become super computers in their own right.

In order to lead everyone to this future, they needed to get people used to the idea of programming for something so complex... to program for something as if it had multiple individual processors (or, in this case, SPEs). When everyone thinks they are only developing for a game console, eventually they will be able to use these skills to develop for the smart devices and appliances of the future.

This was laid out by Sony in the beginning... but once the PS3 came out, all anyone paid attention to was the game console. They ignored Sony's other ambitions. It only makes sense that the PS4, the PS5, etc... would all use the Cell Processor or a derivative of the technology. Each machine would be more powerful than the previous... would have more add-ons (bigger hard drives... solid state drives... more memory... better wireless connectivity... etc...)

For the next phase, and something which will likely be built into the PS4, is the ability for devices to be placed within the vicinity of each other and to automatically detect each other and begin communicating. Sony cell phones of the future will be able to be placed on or near the PS4 to start sharing the photos and videos. Eventually, using the future PSP will allow an instant audio/video connection with a nearby Sony television. Eventually, HDMI will have a wireless counterpart. There will be no need for cables anymore, except for power.

Well, they can use all the tech in PS3 for PS4, just do the obvious improvements. They don't have to create it from scratch like the PS3. Blu-ray will be mainstream by then, just add 100/200GB support and 8x drive, Cell 2 with 2GB ram and release it for no more than 300$ at launch.

Just because developers are familiarized is no reason to fall back on currently existing tech. Games can only make leaps if the hardware does so as well, not small revisions here and there.

360 was heralded for having currently existing tech because developers could get used to it easier, and it lowered development costs in the R&D department, however! Have you ever seen a game as good-looking as Killzone 2 on the 360 yet?

I only want to see a PS4 when the technology on the PS3 starts seeing its final days because by then, the world will be ready for the PS4 because DNA processing, and Holographic Discs will have become tangible. Sony's history suggests that everytime a Playstation is released, they always innovate.

Playstation 1: Embraced the 64-bit era w/ N64, made Optical Media a mainstream in video gaming today, ushered in the world of dual-analog sticks.

Playstation 2: Kick-started the 128-bit era. Made DVDs a mainstream in the digital age as we know it, ushered in the reality of home-entertainment.

Playstation 3: Kick-started the world of asymmetrical processing, something we haven't gotten right since 2004 w/ AMD's Athlon X2 CPUs, Made Blu-Ray the successor to the DVD and will soon replace DVDs overall. Need I really explain why PS3 is king of innovation?

PS3 is able to produce visuals as good that even challenges the 360's graphical prowess and lifespan because PS3 made the leap from currently existing technology into brand-new, never been proven, technology. We can only keep getting better games if the technology under the hood keeps innovating, not refining. Refining technology is what the Wii did and look how that turned out.

All this talk about releasing next-gen consoles when we've barely entered this gen is no different from how PC Gamers think. Remind me the difference between a Console and a PC gamer? Because from where I'm standing, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference, the only difference is that PC gamers are alot more wiser when it comes to the future of gaming, something console gamers in this era are slowly, but surely forgetting.

I've been saying exactly the same on this very site for months!

It is obvious the PS4 will utilise either multiple Cell's (at least 2, or possibly 3), or use a newer version of the Cell (they already have different versions).

By the time they ramp up for the PS4 the yields will be huge on the Cell, and the costs will be much much lower. All the R&D for the Cell is done cutting a huge cost from the development cycle.

It will also definitely feature a faster Blu-Ray drive to allow backward compatibility with PS3 titles. Chances are it won't have a GPU either saving a bit of licensing money there too. Or it may feature the current RSX to aid backwards compatibility - although I would think this is an undesirable option.

Even with the R&D savings and low cost to produce the Cell I would still anticipate a higher launch price point than average, but probably lower than the PS3 launch price.

The other big advatnage of using the Cell in the PS4 is that by the time it launches developers will have got over the current pain of developing for the PS3/Cell. They will be more familiar with the platform and the tools Sony provide will be even more refined.

Compression for textures is another thing, sony's tools are getting updated more and more, and some types of compression the 360 had from the start are only just being used in ps3 games.

I'm expecting ps4 to look like this. I'd say ps4 will arrive in about 6-7years. By that time, ps3 will be using 95% spu throughput.

What sony need to do is make the graphics ram at about 2 gigabytes and the system memory at about 1 - 2 gigabytes separate from the graphics ram. Also they need about 32 - 64 megabytes memory for sound. Then they just need to keep the main Cell processor thats in there already because that is still good for a console and will be for a long time to come. But they need to put a decent graphics processor in there too. Also add a 500+ gigabyte sata II harddrive

What I am saying is that they only need to change the amount of ram and the way its used also Keep the CPU thats in there but put a slightly more powerful graphics processor in there. The PS3 isnt lacking much to make it a beast. Its just lacking those few components so it can Actually run games at 1080P @ 60FPS. But by the time the PS4 comes out 1080P will be old news so they need more of some things but keep some of whats there.

If they keep most of whats in the PS3 including the CPU it will make things a lot easier for games developers. (Im pretty sure some will disagree with me)

The PS4 will be what the PS3 should have been. Sony has some really heavy hitting hardware. They will not won't be as innovative as they will be reconfigurative. The PS4 will have more family appeal and retaining their base hardcore customer.

...That would be smarter because then the programmers won't have to start over in terms of development, but the Cell 2 will probably be a safer guess. The Cell Processor is kinda a quantum leap above processors before it already, and now only a few new types can even run with it (GPU and FPGA), but still kinda comes short.

Adding more ram would be nice, but the way the chip runs, if everything is structured correctly, you don't need the extra ram from what I understand. but if they apply the ram to a newer version of RSX, maybe that would be a better plan... or add ram to both and get over it. :D

We will see the real tech come in when all three companies release thier respective consoles. This time around Sony has to be very careful not to cross into that $500-$600 threshold again. We all know that Sony's console is a better deal for consumers, but price will always be a major factor in whether to purchase something or not.

Expandable and widely used. To use a slightly improved version of Cell 1 makes no sense when Cell 2 will give them an exponential increase in power with almost no learning curve for PS4 developers.

True, PS4 will be more affordable than the PS3 was at launch, but that's mainly because Blu-ray will be the same price DVD drives are today, and Cell 2 manufacturing will be just as cheap as Cell 1. In case you're wondering, Cell costs about $30 less to produce per chip than the RSX GPU.

nVidia is the big wild card, and I'm hoping Sony sticks with them for that project, as well as for the PSP 2.

The Cell is a solid CPU. I think it was very clear from the beginning that Sony is planning to use the Cell in the PS4. Most probably not exactly the same Cell - most probably multiple Cells - which is what the Cell was designed for in the first place. Multiple Cells with a new evolution of the NVidia GPU. Little development cost - easy porting of titles - similar architecture - meaning shorter development cycle for Sony. I mean - what is the mystery here?

The cost of the Cell will be low - the BR drive is good enough for another gen - starting most probably with 200GB as standard.

So simply - multiple Cells, enhanced GPU, maybe multi video output, motion controllers - and by then familiar tools and maybe even 100% BC with PS3.

It is really the XB360 which will be having to try out a different architecture this time around.

I think next generation will be about cost-efficiency and not about uber awesome technology. It will get better graphically, but expect more innovation over graphics next generation. Graphically there isn't too much to improve unless you move on to huge games, true photo-realistic graphics with naitive 1080p. Which is costing developers already a huge sum of money already. The economy simply isn't what it used to be.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
