10 problems anyone who owned a PS3 will understand

Given where the PlayStation 3 ended up, it’s hard to remember just how bad things were at the beginning. When the PlayStation 4 arrived in 2013, its predecessor was still pumping out brilliant exclusives but it took a whole long time for the likes of The Last of Us, Yakuza 4, and Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time to start showing up on Sony’s famously developer-unfriendly machine. Even by the end, when PS3 finally passed Xbox 360 in global sales and had earned the respect of the gaming world, it still wasn’t a perfect machine. Any PS3 owner knows about these ten issues especially well.

My PS3 Fatty 60gig was the best back in 2007. I got it form a pawn shop for $350. We were so loyal when there were so many problems back then, but after the Slim came out, Playstation started kicking butt again. Good times to be a gamer always.

GtR35olution3395d ago (Edited 3395d ago )

Having a lot of exclusive games to play is number 1 which is a good problem

DARKKENT3395d ago

Felt like it was expensive, looked expensive

Original 60gig version still my favourite console ever released in terms of style

Resistance ...what a launch title

YLOD pissed me off properly

My ups and downs with the original ps3

bouzebbal3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

i bought ps3 60gb in march 2007 in europe (launch day).
i bought Virtua Tennis 3 and God of War 2.
Then later on Motorstorm (what a game), Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank.

Ups are:
Hi-tech machine with full ps2 and ps1 library available form day one.
compatible with most usb controllers (PS2 controllers usb adapter).
4USBs!!!!!!

Downs:
price
ylod
no JRPGs for a while!!!!!!!

Still working today.

yeahright23394d ago

Desert island "if you could only take one console" scenario, the original fat PS3 is my choice. backwards compatible with all PlayStation games, possible access to PS4 titles via PS now. great media player, bluray, streaming and all that jazz. Had it's problems sure, but if could only play on one console from here on, that'd be my pick.

XanderZane3394d ago

Damn, you paid to much. I got the Fatty 60GB PS3 with, controller, 7 games, 2 Blu-Ray and 3 PSP games for $270. I still have it.

This will save people clicks.
10 PS3 Problems:
1. Interminably long install times
2. Inferior versions of cross-platform games
3. Vanishing backwards compatibility
4. Those damn squishy L2 and R2 buttons
5. Forced Sixaxis functionality (No Rumble to start)
6. PS Home creeps
7. Exciting exclusives are announced and then never come to the console
8. No controller charging in standby mode
9. That abysmal curved surface
10. The impossibility of backwards compatibility for PS3 games on future PlayStation consoles

I would add, poor exclusive launch titles. It didn't get a AAAE until 18 months later when MGS IV was released exclusively for the PS3. I had no problems with the curve shape of the unit. Everything else was a problem though in some form. The short charge cable sucked. The fact that they only had true B/C on the 60GB PS3 and not on the 20GB PS3 which was discontinued with the first year I believe. Thankfully the PS3 Slim was released and saved the PS3.

Master of Unlocking3394d ago

"Poor exclkusive launch titles"?

Even if I just count Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, F1 2006 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, this launch lineup was better than the ones on PS2, PS4, XBOX360, XBOX One, and a few other systems. Heck Resistance: Fall of Man & Motorstorm alone made it one of the very best, one that kept you entertained till the next slew of great exclusives like Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction or Uncharted Drake's Fortune.

XanderZane3393d ago

@Master of Unlocking
None of those games scored a 90 (AAAE) or better overall on metacritics. Marvel Ultimate Alliance wasn't exclusive. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune wasn't a launch title and didn't score 90 or higher in overall ratings. Sure Resistance: Fall of Man was a decent launch title, but there were a lot more that were very good.

ApocalypseShadow3395d ago

1.could someone post a link that has Sony telling consumers to get 2 jobs?

2.some installations were lengthy yes. But not crazy long.

3.360 was lead platform and developers were not used to Cell not being like typical pc architecture. But man, those crazy graphics on the exclusives.

4.I bought the fat. Never lost BC.gamers complained ps3 was expensive during an ecomonic collapse. Sony took it out

ApocalypseShadow3395d ago

4.I bought the fat. Never lost BC.gamers complained ps3 was expensive during an ecomonic collapse. Sony took it out to make it cheaper. Wasn't Sony's fault.and ps3 was also $499 and not "$599 US dollars."

5.never had problems with the DS3 buttons.except the battery. I replaced the battery.

6.sixaxis worked.sorry. it wasnt bad like the article portays it.and not forced either. heavenly sword, folklore, motorstorm etc.

7.ps home did have creeps.but had cool people too.

8.some games got delayed or cancelled. Like 8 days or TLG.sh*t happens.but yeah it sucks.but happens to every console.

9.standby charging wasn't that big a deal. But then, I had 4 controllers. And battery life was longer than DS4.

10.curved surface gave it character.are we going to complain about all the other console shapes not made for entertainment center stacking ?

11.sucks yes. But almost 60 million gamers don't seemed to be bothered by its removal when there are so many games released on ps4,that there is no time to play them all making you choose what game is first priority.

LexHazard793395d ago

Ps home was ok, I especially liked the time before Killzone 3 came out, they had that mini game you could play in ps home.

ApocalypseShadow3394d ago

If you think the recession started exactly in 2008, you're mistaken.

stiggs3395d ago (Edited 3395d ago )

@Apocalypse Shadow

What was it that compelled you to immediately write a contradictory response to every one of the assertions in the article? I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I simply don't understand this level of brand loyalty, or any for that matter. I guess that some people just love their toys...

In response to your inquiry regarding the "2 jobs" incident, Ken Kutaragi had this to say about Sony's goal for the PS3: "(we want) consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'." The media immediately responded to the statement with the more provocative headline "Sony wants you to get two jobs to buy a PS3". While the "2 jobs" quip may never have been uttered by a representative of Sony, the core message is still the same. But you already knew this... https://www.engadget.com/20...

Also, the PS3 was released in the U.S. at a price point of $599.99 for the 60GB model. (you knew this too) http://www.gamespot.com/art...

Sm30003395d ago

Agreed. And I love sony. It gets cringy on n4g a lot

TFJWM3394d ago

What compelled you to respond to him in this way?

This is one of the issues with everything today, article writer has his opinion and someone responds with why he think he is wrong. What is the issue with his response? Why is he some crazed fanboy for responding with why he thinks the article writer is wrong?

stiggs3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

@TFJWM

Well for one, the article is on a commercial website. The central motivation for which is to gain viewership and monetize the traffic. The assertions of the author, which for the most part are nothing more than opinion, are secondary to the impetus to making money. While some may dispute the allegations they can not deny recognizing the true incentive of certain web sites to post such articles.

The article is validated by the fact that it exits to stimulate financial growth which is more than I can say about Apocalypse Shadow's response. It may be crass commercialism but at least the article exists for a reason. His response, well I'm not so sure.

Everyone is entitled to expressing their own opinion but I just can't fathom what makes a reader feel compelled to refute every single point on an article written about a consumer product. What is Apocalypse Shadow really defending here but a multi-national company? I find this compulsion so odd.

I have a BMW. It's a nice car and I'm quite happy with my purchase. Yet, I've never felt compelled to conscientiously defend the brand against all nay-sayers, or worse, contradict every dissenting opinion that I've read regarding my vehicle of choice. I certainly don't post negative comments on articles regarding competing car brands. I just don't understand brand loyalty...at all. When I make the decision to upgrade my car I may look into what BMW has to offer, but my history with the vehicle won't prohibit me, in any way, from buying another company's offering. I don't let my possessions influence my mindset or behavior.

The behavior of a certain sect of the gaming community resembles that of a cult. As Sm3000 said, "it's cringy".

The things you own end up owning you" -- Chuck Palanuik

TFJWM3394d ago

....

"I certainly don't post negative comments on articles regarding competing car brands. I just don't understand brand loyalty...at all."

Looks at comment history pretty much every post either attacking anti-MS posters or Pro-MS...

stiggs3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

@TFJWM

Please point out the comments that I've posted which you believe disparage a particular product or brand.
I'll wait...

Also, the majority of my "attacking anti-MS posters" comments are usually directed at those individuals whose behavior is detrimental to the gaming community or those that choose to post fabricated information. They are not intended as a means to profess my affinity for one company over another. I can't recall any situations in which I've ever slighted a person for posting their sincere opinion or rallied for or against a particular product or brand.

2-bit_hustler3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

The full quote of Ken Kutaragi is as follows:

"Whether consumers think a product is expensive or cheap all depends on the balance between its appeal and price," … "Our ideal [for PS3] is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what." [1]

Ken’s “core message” was that if it was out of a consumer’s immediate means to purchase a PS3, then ideally said consumer would be willing to make the sacrifice of working more hours to purchase it because the overwhelming appeal of the PS3 would outweigh its hefty price.

The tendentious, mendacious "core message" you're peddling is James Ransom-Wiley’s. [2]

Ravenor3394d ago

@TFJWM

A lot of his arguments against the article are anecdotal or tinged with rose coloured glasses. Saying Sixaxis was good for anything is a farce. Lair and Warhawk are examples of two games that improve with the use of the sticks vs the motion controls.

Or his misunderstanding of tone at the time, Sony was so high on themselves they thought people would trip over each other to get one. The 'more hours' comment had to be one of the most smug, condescending comments ever uttered by a Sony Exec.

Everything about the launch of the PS3 was a disaster. To simply ignore the mistakes and lessons they learned is just stupidity.

Imalwaysright3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

@ Ravenor

"To simply ignore the mistakes and lessons they learned is just stupidity."

Mark Cerny, the "father" of the PS4 that so far has been much more successful than the PS3 agrees with you and I for one am glad otherwise we would most likely have a console more similar to the PS3 right now.

sad but true. as far as the ps3 was concerned it was more about pushing the bluray format than a game console. i give sony credit for rebounding after about 2 years and getting back to being a great game console but those first 2 years were pretty bad.

Sony never said you need two jobs. But when asked about the expensive price of PS3, Kutaragi did say that those who want it, will work extra hours to get it.

I actually did sign up for overtime at my old overnight shift Home Depot job, to get the PS3. No regrets. Btw, when I want to buy or do something pricey, guess what I work more hours and save. I dont need to, but overtime pay and such means less waiting.

ApocalypseShadow3394d ago

Or, you could have saved money by going to the market and cooking and not eating fast food.

Did you put in more hours this gen to buy PS4 or Xbox one?

LexHazard793394d ago

@Apocalypse,

Who am I Boogie?!?

hahaha, i dont eat fast food like that. Maybe once a month I might eat Papa Ginos or something. I learned how to cook at an early age and I cook 98% meals.

And this time around I didnt need to work extra hours to get Xbox One at launch(i sold it last yr) or PS4 Pro (sold my base PS4 to buy it).

I did however work extra to go Costa Rica and Panama..like I said pricey things.

ziggurcat3394d ago

"1.could someone post a link that has Sony telling consumers to get 2 jobs?"

it's something people have often taken out of context. they never actually said "get a second job", they said something along the lines of you'd feel as though you'd want to work more hours to save up for the PS3, not that you *should* get or *need* a second job.

"Ken Kutaragi had this to say about Sony's goal for the PS3: "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

https://www.engadget.com/20...

it was still a silly thing to say, though.

ApocalypseShadow3394d ago

If the system was not the typical $299 price, it suggests that you might have to save more or work a couple more hours to get it.

That's not unreasonable.

ziggurcat3394d ago

that's pretty much all that was said - the ones that were saying that Sony said "get a second job" were the so-called "journalists", really.

2-bit_hustler3394d ago (Edited 3394d ago )

It's only a silly thing to say after the full quote has been selectively edited.

Here’s the full quote:

"Whether consumers think a product is expensive or cheap all depends on the balance between its appeal and price," … "Our ideal [for PS3] is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what." [1]

In other words, the "ideal" was for the appeal of the PS3 to be higher than its price.

Ken Kutaragi believed that if consumers considered the PS3 to be something highly appealing, then said consumers would be willing to "work more hours and buy it" if they couldn’t afford to do so straightaway.

He simply described the natural behavior of someone who was not looking to get a PS3 on an 8 finger 2 thumb discount.

Launch PS3 60 GB will always feel like the most decadent and luxurious console ever released. I love mine. And they said Blu-ray would fail. Muhahaha.

The_Sage3394d ago

A lot of people wound up with HD DVD add on paperweights.

XanderZane3393d ago

Some people were too stupid to just wait until the DVD vs HD-DVD war was over. I waited.

Bismarn3395d ago

Why are we reminiscing about the PS3 like it's a TurboGrafx 16? It is still an active platform.

Fist4achin3395d ago

I always hated when I would get the dreaded black screen. It only happened a couple of times, but it was a freakout moment...

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle29d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Cacabunga37d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199237d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga37d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman36d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box37d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion36d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7237d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7537d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit37d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14937d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7737d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
