Ultimately I thought the game was very ambitious with a graphically detailed and vibrant world. Sadly after achieving level 35 I got tired of fetch quests and decided it was time to start/continue the story and this is where FFXV falls flat on its face. It's a great game overall but the story is very lazily written and almost non-existent; the only Final Fantasy it manages to outperform story-wise is FFXIII.

Summing it all up: Great game but story-wise a horrible Final Fantasy. It is very western with exploration and side/fetch quest heavy. With a story that is put to shame by games such as Uncharted and The Last of Us, which don't even belong in the JRPG or even the RPG category.

DarXyde3454d ago

To be fair, I believe this is Tabata's first Final Fantasy title. And comparing the story telling elements to Uncharted and The Last of Us is somewhat unfair.

Honestly, I cannot fathom any game that tells a story nearly as well as games from Straley and Druckman released in the last decade. They're just on another level. From everyone.

darthawesome903454d ago (Edited 3454d ago )

Actually Hajime Tabata was the director of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and it's one of my favorite JRPG's of all time. I favor turn-based and ironically Crisis Core is an Action-RPG. A game which has my 2nd favorite Final Fantasy story and my favorite soundtrack of all time.

I don't think that FFXV's story is Tabata's fault. There have been many directors at the helm of FFXV's 10 year development cycle and it was formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It was supposed to be an epic Romeo and Juliet tragedy of Noctis and Stella Nox Fleuret (who was replaced by Lunafreya Nox Fleuret)

Extended Final Fantasy Versus XIII video which briefly shows the two lovers about to battle each other. Unable to be together due to two royal families at war.

That and they aren't open world games. Hopefully the updates flesh out the story a bit. All in all with Kingsglaive etc., it's a fairly fleshed out world, it's just that fetch quests are simply filler and need to be more drawn out and tied to the story at hand.

That's the difference b/w linear driven sp games and open world. Mass Effects remains fairly linear to stay story focused. Only TW3 seems to have been able to blend both to superb results. Even then, the contracts became kinda repetitive. The main and secondary quests were unbelievable though, especially for an open world game.

Gardenia3454d ago

@darthawesome90

I totally agree with you. It felt like the story was added later on which I heard was actually what happened. A Final Fantasy should be an adventure from beginning to the end were it takes 40 hours for the story alone. I think I spend 15 hours on the (mostly boring) main story and 35 hours on all other things

Adrian_v013454d ago

The Last of Us wasn't great in story though. What pulled TLoU out was the characters, they were amazing. Story-wise it's a cliche example of 'save the immune one in a zombie apocalypse'.

The only "broship" i enjoyed was Noctis-Prompto. Ignis and Gladio could have been likable characters but not in this constellation. It always felt like they were just there cause it's their job to be. I never felt true friendship or affection there.

Kurdishcurse3453d ago

uncharteds story is actually quite horrible. last of us felt like an oscar bait game. i found both boring and stale. especially after getting used to all the walk&talk sequences that disrupt gameplay. it just screams bad design and terrible priorities imo.

Haven't played past FF 8 but I still want to try this one some day

Lionalliance3454d ago

Yeah, the fetsh quest are the most boring one, and there's too many of them, other than that, the game is fun.

Harkins17213454d ago

Should have focused more on the story as less on so many fetch quests. Loved the game for what it was. It could have been so much.

Irishguy953454d ago

They're optional. Fetch quests are not fun in any game

Summons753454d ago

The only thing majorly wrong with the game is the very odd gameplay mechanics in Chapter 13. I mean I understand story wise why the sudden change in mechanics but the magic system is too slow to be your only defense and the sneaking is awful when it's not required let alone when enemies spawn in your face and are twice your speed so you can't get away. Other than that and bugs that will be patched in the future they did an amazing job. 40 hours in, just finished the story, and still hungry for more.

I honestly didn't have a problem with chapter 13. The black hole spell made it easy, and dodging the axemen wasn't a chore either. I think I only hid once, to see what it was like.
I breezed through the least interesting section of chapter 13 in like ten minutes. That said I'm glad they're giving it an overhaul.

The main cast was also fantastic and very well realized. One chapter in particular marked a great tonal shift that really stuck with me. Watching the four of them deal with tragedy, and their different individual ways of doing so, was really good stuff.

I remember you, Domon. I'm surprised you're even still bothering. Everybody knows you won't play this game, will never intend to play this game, and have devoted your life to bashing this game that, again, you've never played yourself. At the very least point out the game's actual issues before the team ends up fixing them. The cast was a high point, and that's a general consensus.

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom383d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

Relientk77383d ago

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125518d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501517d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne518d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989517d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga517d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989517d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga517d ago (Edited 517d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69518d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid517d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69517d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp517d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion769d ago (Edited 769d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled769d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
