What does it matter? Anti-monopoly regulations will ensure that all Microsoft can do is allow users to play Microsoft games through a paywall using Xbox software. Microsoft will not be allowed to prohibit other game developers from using Windows as they do now which pretty much ensures that all Microsoft has done is ensure the redundancy of the Xbox One and the shift of the Xbox division away from hardware and games to just software and games.

The fact is that the nature of the Xbox division after the initial success of the 360 was to ensure that it was a major proft centre for investors and Microsoft got deluded into thinking that the good times will continue in the next generation without them having to actually give something in return other than the little they were towards the end of the 360's lifetime. The rejection of the Xbox One as a do it all entertainment living room console as well as the draconian anti-consumer policies Microsoft wanted to introduce coupled with an underpowered console (when compared with the PS4) meant that reality bit and Microsoft could no longer generate major profits with the least effort. Instead of correcting the obvious and giving gamers what they want the most - Xbox One exclusives every quarter, Microsoft decides to merge the Xbox and Windows 10 ecosystems. Good for Microsoft but bad for the Xbox console.

Microsft has failed to understand that the reason Sony is successful as far as gaming is concerned is that gamers trust the brand to deliver BOTH games and the hardware to play them on.

They may sell more windows 10 computers (that is MS true end game) but the Xbox brand will be so watered down and deluded that it will offer no value to the consumer. there will be no exclusive game(s) just for the Xbox Console anymore if that is MS plan. And frankly, Consoles live and die by their exclusive games content. If you can own a Playstation and a PC with Win10 (that also uses xbox controlers and can connect to your TV) why would you need the Xbox console?
This smells (if true) of more of Microsoft's scheming to marginalize console gaming and take control away from all the other players in the industry.
Sheesh, MS really longs for the days that they had their customers, vendors and competitors under their thumb and could dictate all aspects of an industry with impunity.

Xbox machine manufacture and sales = no profit from console....

No, Microsoft could just move to a much much heavier focus on PC. PC are not Xbox and Xbox are not PC, no matter how you look at it. Two different platforms. Windows 10 is a software platform, Xbox is both software and hardware, you require both.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
