The Division Is Having A Bad Time

In Tom Clancy’s The Division, there’s a war on the streets. There’s a war on the message boards and in the forums, too. This game is having a tough time all around.

What is really interesting to me is how similar this sounds to Destiny. It sounds to me this MMO light formula is in its infancy which isn't a huge surpise. Destiny has taken the better part of two years to get things straight. Perhaps as we get a few sequels the formula will get better.

Well, Destiny might be the popular comparison at the moment, but it didn't invent the gear score trend. It was done a while ago and one of the more popular games with it was WoW. Rift and Never Winter have had it as well.

It's less about the formula atm and more about how the Incursion right now is crap. People at first mistakingly thought it was going to be a raid or have multiple bosses like General Assembly has (it has 2 human bosses and 1 heli boss encounter), and instead got a 14 wave horde mode. Hard mode isn't too bad in terms of difficulty, but there's really only one place to hide to avoid all the grenade and mortar spam that occurs in a game that's suppose to be a "cover based shooter" and doesn't let you really even use cover... Challenging mode is pretty impossible atm with lvl 34 yellow mobs 2 shotting people with 65% damage mitigation, and you need to complete it multiple times to hit the required gear score for the next incursion (which will be 220 recommended). The only way to beat challenging atm (even if you had a set of full hard mode incursion gear) is through glitching, which is why people are doing it. If they created a fun, challenging (but not overkill), and rewarding peace of content then people, then people would do it the legit way rather than staring at a grey wall firing the same 2 skills off and running in a circle for 30 minutes to an hour.

Wasn't saying that Destiny re-invented the wheel. It is just really the first time these MMO light features are being incorporated into shooters and the like. It's a natural progression considering last gen was all about basic RPG elements such as XP being added. I think from a development standpoint, how to incorporate these mechanics into genres outside of the MMO is what is proving to be a little bit of trial and error at the moment.

All those concepts came even before WoW's mediocre implementation of them. Everquest comes to mind. But they were never combined with shooter elements and Destiny (and Borderlands) are closer to this genre than any other game.

It appears to be Massives first undertaking with this style of game play and they are making the same mistakes other devs have made instead of looking at other games to see what has already been refined.

I admit without playing the division ever and just going off of what my friends have said the launch version of the division has it's issues, it eventually fixed some of the more hilariously glaring ones so far.

But you know, people hate change sometimes...new ideas are always welcomed, but sometimes aren't a good fit...I say it's great we tried, but sometimes admitting we were wrong, and this new format looks like a website that I will have to sit through 18 pages to see the article I actually clicked should go back.

In conclusion I refuse to indent on the internet or use proper grammar or punctuation, but I will say this was indeed like the late and great southpark snow ski instructor told us..."you're ganna have a bad time"
