What went wrong with Quantum Break on PC?

Digital Foundry:
60 frames per second isn't possible on a 60Hz monitor: The most serious problem with this port lies in its performance limitations - currently, we've determined that it simply isn't possible to reach frame-rates matching the refresh rate of the monitor in use. The maximum frame-rate seems to be limited to 5/6th of the refresh rate - this means, when using a 60Hz monitor, the game simply cannot go beyond 50 frames per second. We even tried it with a Core i7 system paired with Titan X running at 720p on the lowest settings, but 50fps was still the limit - and the same thing applies to AMD GPUs too. The resulting frame-time graph sees the game bouncing between 16.7 and 33ms throughout the experience - even with the most powerful PC hardware available. With a 50Hz refresh rate then, you'll be limited to just 43fps. When using a 120Hz or 144Hz monitor, the maximum frame-rate obviously increases, but you can't achieve a level of performance that results in consistent, level frame-times. As far as we can tell, a judder-free experience is impossible at the moment without a patch from Remedy. This is something we've never seen before, but we've reproduced the issue on two different PCs running four different graphics cards.

Rushed port it seems. Tis a shame. It was obviously made for the X1 and then ported over.

The clever reconstruction technique, whilst benefiting the X1 in terms of res naturally doesn't suit the PC that has no real limitations for such a technique to be used in the first place.

"What really stings is that some of these issues could be addressed by the community right now if not for the limitations of the Universal Windows Platform"

MS really need to sort this UWP issue out. Its not fair for the PC to be anchored by a policy that is an after-birth of console restrictions.

butchertroll3681d ago (Edited 3681d ago )

It is not rushed port. UWP and his limitations are the main problem ( from article ) :

"As things stand, it simply isn't possible to achieve a smooth frame-rate on any PC hardware configuration and thanks to the profound limitations imposed on gamers by the Universal Windows Platform, there's no way to fix it."

Seafort3681d ago

This is typical of how Microsoft treat PC gamers and the platform.

This is why most PC gamers didn't want them coming back.

They are a scourge on PC gaming. Always has been, always will be.

The sooner Microsoft go back to Xbox the better for PC gaming as a platform.

UWP will die or be completely forgotten about in the next few months. Throwing money at a problem and forcing a new walled garden onto everyone doesn't earn you respect Microsoft it just pisses more people off.

Good riddance!

q8kik3681d ago

The game is capped at 50fps and there are games on UWP that run at 60 I believe. So how is it not rushed ?

BiggerBoss3681d ago

@butchertroll

QB is absolutely a rushed port, what do you mean? The issues with UWP just means that PC gamers can't fix the issues themselves like they could normally on Steam, etc.

butchertroll3681d ago

@BiggerBoss

Rushed port?

Hm...GeOW : UE on PC isn't rushed. It came out a few months later XOne version and how it turned out???

Eonjay3681d ago

I just want to know why its locked at 50FPS?
Sounds like a total gimp.

Unspoken3680d ago

They have no idea why this is happening? What exactly do they analyze? Folks with 120 or 144 hz monitors can play at a higher rate but let's down play it for the peanut gallery? What's causing the stuttering? We don't know so we blame "limitations" of UWP?

How do you guys drink this up? DF keeps losing my interest. They have to be one of the worst graphics analysis companies out there. My guess is hits first, engineering later.

TwoForce3681d ago

Yiss ! That's just freaking bad ! No wonder why MS screw off with PC gamer badly. It's not even funny to be honest.

UltraNova3681d ago

What's even worse is that even after all that fan uproar immediate after announcing that QB would be simultaneously released on PC, like a month before release date they still went on to release a broken port...

As absurdly as it sounds, it seems MS tried to sabotage their own game twice!

What the hell is going on with MS?

Gazondaily3681d ago

@Ultra

You really think MS wanted the PC version to run badly??

UltraNova3681d ago

@Septic

Jesus man are you really asking me that?

You'd think after all those botched releases (Driveclub, Watchdogs, Halo collection, Batman) they'd be a bit more vigilante with their own 1st party releases, especially considering all the flack they got since this gen started.

Its absurd really.

You really think MS didn't know the PC version run badly?

Trez12343681d ago

It will get better I'm sure coz Microsoft seems to b really committed to the idea. Not really an excuse but it's early days for the all uwp thing. It will get better.

Professor_K3681d ago

They released it on pc thats what happened lol.

Xbox is obvls the go 2 console for this game, as should be considering it was made from the ground up for the platform... PC gamers are in no position to b!tch since releasing this on their platform was more of a favor.

whothedog3680d ago (Edited 3680d ago )

Oh thank you MS for releasing a poorly optimized game on PC.

Edit:

why not postpone the pc version and fix the problems? Releasing a bad port hurts the game rather than people talking highly of the game.

nthstew3680d ago

I think they will fix this issues with a patch. will have to wait for a week and see i suppose. just bought the game on PC and i hope it will not get disappointed.

Another trash port from MS... This is what happens when MS cares about PC gaming. BTW KI is also a crap port (stupidly demanding for a fighter), I can run more demanding games on my PC without having to drop the resolution and other settings like I have to for KI.
This port makes the Arkham Knight port look like a proper job.
UWP is going to fail like Games for Windows Live did!

So the game doesn't go pass the 50fps mark and we already have people here on N4G saying they're playing it at 1440p and 4K, 60fps on ultra... Bunch of liars, I just love when Digital Foundry exposes all of your imaginary PCs.

Malphite3681d ago

This is unacceptable. MS should fix this mess asap. 50fps cap doesn't make any sense at all. What were they thinking? And UWP makes it impossible for the community to fix these issues.

Good job Microsoft.

Professor_K3681d ago

MS should just stop making pc releases. its obviously not working out. BTW KI is amazing

Dario_DC3681d ago

KI is amazing so easy to get into and play, not as deep as SFV but tons of fun, I just really dislike having to drop so many settings to run it well, my pc is a bit crap though, but I play more demanding games better.

TheGreatGamer3681d ago

UWP is still in very early days and if you check twitter even guys on the Xbox team are helping to fix issues with UWP, it's in the very early stages so for now we should just be grateful that were even getting to play previously exclusive X1 games and just wait on Microsoft to make the necessary fixes

equal_youth3681d ago

How about fixing something before release and not using the players as potential alpha testers.
MS just wants to lure us in with quantum break and every other game that will be exclusive to that useless UWP.

ONESHOTV23681d ago

as a pc gamer i never once begged for a game if a developer ports it to pc then i will say look at that another game to buy.

JJShredder3681d ago

I personall give MS tons of breaks but it is starting to get really old and tiring. If the shit doesn't work and isn't ready for the mainstream, THEN DON"T RELEASE IT.

When are these companies going to learn that it's better to delay and have a functional product then to force somthing out and deal with all the bad press.

jmac533681d ago

"Please be grateful" yes, yes grovel to our corporate overlords Microsoft. There is no excuse for releasing a broken product to paying customers time and time again.

Eonjay3681d ago

"we should just be grateful that were even getting to play previously exclusive X1 games"

Holy mother of corporate servitude. This is some sick sh*t right here. To hell if its broken, just be grateful they shat this out and took your money.

Reclaim your dignity dude.

Phoenix763681d ago

@TheGreatGamer

UWP is still in very early days: Technically your wrong there. MS have been trying to bring about a 1 OS fits all systems since windows 8 was announced and tried unifying it with any ARM(compatible) device. I.E. Laptops, Phones and Surface RT etc etc.
They've had plenty of time to try and perfect a 1/OS/FA and still have not got it right after what? 3 years now??

ShottyGibs3680d ago

What's to be grateful about a broken game? No one asked for them. They need to show some old fashioned repesect and get it ready and working before release.

Slanty3680d ago

oh come on you don't release a broken game and then to add insult to injury you charge £50 for it. I'm sorry I usually give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt but this time they are just giving pc gamers a big fuck you!

Well it seems that not only is UWP a consumer nightmare in the making but also a limiting development platform. Hopefully it'll die faster than Zune.

Single A games and live service games. Those make sense

S2Killinit782d ago

None of it makes sense. But its happening.

Ps5conehead782d ago

That’s up to Microsoft they want return on there investment. From buying up those publishers. That’s what there in business for. And they made a mistake putting day one exclusive on game pass. So now Microsoft wants to profit any way they can.its called buisness . Just like Sony putting games on pc a year are two after ps5 launch.
So if they can make money off PlayStation and Nintendo. They will do that. And I bet soon real soon they will release some aaa exclusives .and I bet one day it will be same day release

TheEroica781d ago

Sony gamers begging for Xbox games.... Who would've thunk it?

BISHOP-BRASIL781d ago

Yeah, because random site off the internet represents all Sony gamers, they have the letter of attorney and all...

S2Killinit781d ago

Lol what a spin. You dizzy?

AsunaYuukiTheFlash781d ago (Edited 781d ago )

We don’t care about shovelwares. Get that junk out of PS5

StormSnooper781d ago

More like MS begging to put their games on PlayStation.

Friendlygamer782d ago

Some of these seem to be exclusive for lack of enthusiasm of the publisher rather than because of deals. A lot of cool indies skip ps for some reason like katana zero, el paso, elsewhere and gunbrela

S2Killinit782d ago

Even more indies skip xbox. We know that right?

Friendlygamer782d ago

Quality over quantity, Microsoft got some really interesting and curated niche games on their machines, maybe in part because of gamepass

S2Killinit781d ago

Quality and MS are not things you bring up in same sentence.

shinoff2183781d ago (Edited 781d ago )

Alot of indies skip xbox to. It goes round and round. Personally I think your off base on that but no need to have the argument.

Friendlygamer781d ago

Between katana zero, valheim, Battletech, el passo... I don't feel off base. maybe ps got a million of light novel games that will never release on Xbox but like I've said, I'm talking about niche games highlights, the 10%.

Heck, it's probably thanks to Microsoft that the s.t.a.l.k.e.r games came to console ps included, meanwhile Sony backwards compatibility continues to be extremely anemic.

And I'm sure most ps5 users are happy to ignore these games and just play wathever new 3rd person action game is trending but it's cool that Microsoft gives some love to smaller audiences and software preservation

shinoff2183781d ago

Again your off base just to be snide. All it's showing though is your ignorance.

One light novels wtf is that even. Ps has plenty of pretty damn good indies.

Speaking of indies and ms being responsible. You know F.I.S.T. of course you do alot of you guys just support gamepass. Well here's a history of Sony being responsible for helping indies. Look up the China project from Sony.

Lastly lol your ignorance showing again. Sony has plenty of games. Personally third person is better then first anyway but that's besides the point. Sony gets so many games that xbox doesn't get because yall don't support the games. Jrpgs being a great example. I personally am not into every Sony first party game. Alot of us aren't. On the other side you don't get to eat often so you gobble up everything. Me personally God of War not my cup, etc. For me I'm into jrpgs and ms just can't touch Sony on those. Again because the Xbox base doesn't support it. Devs dont wanna waste their time or money. Hit me up when falcom develops a game over there.

Speaking of third person narrative games. Aren't yall drooling over hellblade 2. The first one was Sony exclusive at one point. Another not my cup game. Showing we don't have to fall in line and agree we love everything Sony puts out. The facts are they sell though unlike elsewhere(not nintendo)

StormSnooper781d ago

You are same person as GamerRN, yes?

Abnor_Mal782d ago

They really think PlayStation fans would want to play Redfall? Pfft.

Personally nothing on that list would be any game I’d want to play.

TwoPicklesGood782d ago

I’d absolutely love Hellblade 2, Palworld, and Quantum Break on ps5 as I’m sure tons of others would too. There’s nothing wrong with wanting games from another console and its sad that people try to act like they aren’t interested in them.

shinoff2183781d ago

While indont agree with the games. I agree with the point. Your not wrong.

DarXyde782d ago

Sunset Overdrive makes very good sense. Palworld might.

Don't know about the others. Hellblade II does make sense given the original launched on PS4 first. Quantum Break was a massive letdown for me. I absolutely hated the whole TV show thing and I don't think anyone should have to relive that on modern hardware.

Now that Remedy owns Control, it’s time to reclaim Quantum Break

Alan Wake 2 studio Remedy Entertainment has reclaimed the rights to Control, and now sci-fi hit Quantum Break deserves the same treatment.

Petebloodyonion798d ago

Totally agree with that especially when Quantum Break has several references to Alan Wake and Alan Wake make allusions to QB.
I do believe that MS and Remedy can work things out and MS has usually been nice to devs and publishers regarding IP.

Obscure_Observer798d ago

They can't "reclaim" what was never theirs.

Petebloodyonion798d ago

I’m sure we can settle for purchase from MS the IP.

Lightning77798d ago

MS is not doin anything with it. Plus they're doing a multiverse of their own so Remedy needs the IP.

If MS wants to have exclusive let it be timed for 6 months then go to other platforms. MS seems to be, let's say, generous with some if their games as of late.

Or have QB2 be multiplat from the jump, put it on GP. Keeping QB2 as an exclusive is kinda weird these days.

Obscure_Observer797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

"I’m sure we can settle for purchase from MS the IP."

Good luck

@Lightning77

"MS is not doin anything with it."

Japan Studio is dead nd Sony isn´t doing anything with Bloodborne either! Yet I can 100% guarantee that there´s a far bigger demand for a sequel, remake or even a remaster for that game from both PS5 and PC gamers.

That been said, why don´t you ask Sony tol sell the IP to Fromsoftware now that according to rumors, they bought Elden Ring from Bandai?

ZwVw798d ago (Edited 798d ago )

Reclaim? That would mean that they actually owned the ip at one point, which they never did (MS always has). Apples & oranges. Remedy always owned the Control ip (just not the publishing), as they have with Alan Wake.

About as likely as them getting the Max Payne rights from Rockstar.

mastershredder798d ago (Edited 798d ago )

Sending you game to a publisher does not mean they get "rights to own it " unless that was part of the contract (monetary/ strategic reasons). 505 was the publisher they worked with to publish and distribute it, it dos not mean that 505 flat out "owned" anything, clearly they did have a special arrangement that made them open to limit their publishing rights. and so here we are and big whoop

Jingsing798d ago (Edited 798d ago )

Yeah get Quantum Break PS5, only if you put it on disc with all the associated movie material.

isarai798d ago

I mean they got the Alan Wake IP back from MS, so I feel like they could get QB back as well
