Gaming isn't a right. If you can't afford to buy games, you really shouldn't be buying them. But thats a universal truth that applies to everything in life. Housing/Toys/Cars/Food.

There is always rental, which is quite cheap. Or saving up to buy used games.

I know that this youtube video does not represent the USA as a whole, there are some brilliant brains in the US, but it was damn funny to see so many air heads.

As much as I dislike CViper, I have to agree...gaming is a hobby, a past-time, not a right, a necessity, or in any way apart of why the general consensus pays taxes, votes, or maintains an occupation. That was a very funny video, thanks for that...however I, and a majority of the people I know, could have answered those questions, punctually, precisely, elaborately, and correctly... So as with any other region of the world, what you have here is proof, that it's extremely difficult, to keep unintelligent people off of the television.

I live in Brazil, a poor country. People here make less than $200 USD per month to live in average. Our tax system make a game to cost 150% more than in Europe or US. I am lucky to often travel overseas to get my games. But when a new one is out and I want to play ASAP, I buy it for $120 USD.

The Piracy in under development countries (and also in developed ones) is the #1 source of funds to drug dealers. We should look at piracy an indicator to changes things with all players of the value chain, starting helping people to get social inclusion.

If you cant pay, you shouldnt play. If you take something without paying for it you are a thief, you can try to justify it however you like, but if you steal something you are a thief plain and simple. It doesnt matter that its too expensive or badly priced, it's still stealing if you pirate it.

I would love to see one of you people who try to allways justify your theft, go into a normal business and steal something. Then tell the cops that 'it was too much, so it's ok'. Just because you cant see who your stealing from, doesnt mean you arent a criminal.

Once you can make unlimited free copies of something, it is automatically devalued. That's what happened to the painters when photography was invented. Now they call them starving artists, but you don't see them crying. If poor people are playing free video games they'll be too busy to break into your house.

Can you also say "theft" is justified? Theft is more than just games and software. It's also weapons, money, medicine, land and nuclear power. Theft isn't a "grey" area. It's black-and-white. Stealing games is bad, but stealing military secrets to protect your own country isn't? Or is it? Can you answer that if you're the one deciding it?

It's not that simple. Piracy may be simple enough, but 'theft' is another subject I hope you're ready to defend to the death about. Otherwise don't make blanket statements like that because people who don't live in the sunny USA see it the same way you do about "grey" areas so easily.

@10.3 What they should do, is code all the games so the first time a disc is inserted into a console, the discs key is bound to your PSN user. If the game is inserted in a console with a different user, it just pops up with an error..
That way you could easily create backups without the companies worrying of people copying and selling it to other ppl.

if games were coded as you said it would put an end to trading in games, buying used games and for the people who could hardly afford used games in the first place will have no chance of buying new games.

funny enough your idea would increase game piracy and the pirates would have a legit (albeit still illegal) reason to steal games

@10.6 its commonly known that game developers hate the idea that people use buyback and trade games amongst eachother.
If codes were put in the games in a non-crackable but fully backup supporting way, it would decrease piracy.

The game disc being tied to the PS3 was a story bandied about before the PS3 launched and it didn't go down well. People were concerned about not being able to take a game to a friends house and play it there but then you could just log in with your account on their machine but then if you wanted to pirate the game why not just make an account and pass it on with that users account. You could pass on a whole 320GB HDD full of games linked to one disposable PSN account as it costs nothign to set one up. Of course you could tie the disc to the Playstation hardware but then you stop people being able to take games to a friends house to play.

My idea is flawless from the viewpoint of the developer.
All games are locked to your PSN account, so you are the only one able to log in and start a game. If you want to play at your friends house you can log into your user from his/her PS3, and still enjoy multiplayer/gaming with friends. sure, your friend could still log into your account, but you can only use one account one space at a time, so you and your friend can be on the same account simultaneously.

there lies the problem, everyone else will lose out. places like gamestop would only be able to sell new games which i can only imagine would cut heavily into there profit and of course we the gamers lose even more by having to buy full priced games every single time not being able to trade in games etc...

basically to many people lose out for your idea to work

@10.9 > The likes of Gamestop (and GAME and Gamestation here in the UK) have RRP's from the publisher, no publisher is going to have their sales dented by a computer store selling for over their RRP. The stores will lose out as people will just shop online and quite frankly they would deserve to lose sales after years of ripping off gamers by paying out for example £15 for a title on trade in and then putting that same game back on the shelf at just £2 under the brand new price.
