Is Xbox One's biggest problem Microsoft itself

Steve C talks about whether the biggest obstacle to the success of Xbox One is the company that created it.

The Xbox One was designed to be an all in one media machine based on the reveal/hardware decisions.Microsoft thought they could win over the mainstream by building some kind of box that offers everything. That direction cost the Xbox One in terms of performance on the gaming side.

darthv723684d ago

The irony of the all-in-one box is that while people frowned upon MS for trying it... they flocked to the PS4 and it is virtually the same thing. It does tv and social and media and games and now VR.

As far as the xb1 is concerned, it is a good system. no doubt it is entertaining those who bought it. There will just be those who are dead set against it or anything that MS makes because they feel so strongly about MS and the XB brand.

GamerGT3684d ago

Your area correct. The PS4 does do those things. I think PlayStation had incorporated those added items more subtly. But first and foremost made sure there was no shortage of exclusive titles and that games were the priority. I think it wouldn't have mattered if the XBOX One had superior graphics this time around. The difference is slim. What matters is the quality and quantity of titles coming out of their studios.

UltraNova3684d ago

@GamerGt

Exactly, Sony focused on games and gamer related social features for their console while MS had Multimedia and Windows plans that clouded peoples perception of what the xbox was becoming.

Consoles are for games 99% of the time, a concept/message MS failed to focus on and pass along the gaming community.

MasterCornholio3684d ago

"they flocked to the PS4 and it is virtually the same thing"

But the messaging of the reveal was very different between the two.

In Sonys PS4s reveal gaming was the centerpiece of the conference with barely any mention of TV or other media features. Everything from new IPs to Cerny explaining how developers worked with them to develop the system is exactly what gamers wanted to hear. Therefore, when people thought of the PS4 they thought of everything that had something related to gaming.

But in Microsofts unveiling Kinect and the idea of a cable box was the star of the show. The majority of the conference was dedicated to how Microsoft would integrate the box with the TV world and how Kinect could do everything on the box. The actual gaming side of the presentation was lackluster with COD and Forza making an appearance. In the end after watching this gamers didnt really associate the system with gaming the way they did with the PS4. To many of them the Xbox One was just a cable box that was bundled with Kinect (which represented the downfall of 1st party support on the Xbox 360) plus its focus was going to be the regular mkx of Microsoft franchises and COD.

Now if Microsoft dedicated the whole unveiling to just gaming the results would have been very different. People point out their e3 conference but the truth is the first news that people will read is the unveiling of the system.

nix3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

The real reason why gamers lost faith in XBox started last gen. Faulty hardware that kept breaking down. Scratch discs. Last 3 years of last gen saw nothing new from MS studios whereas Sony was pumping games out even on the last year.

People may have short memories (that's why we keep voting same politicians) but last gen everyone who hung around 360 knew there was a better party happening on the other side. Just look at the years PS3 exclusives won "Game of the year" awards - there are 3, i remember: UC2, Journey and TLOU.

Then Xbox1 was announced. Rest is history.

We can talk about how much MS has turned around but it's like PTSD for some of those who had to go through 3-5 consoles/dry season. Those memories can't be erased that easily.

Surviving only on 360 last gen was also like a dude bro thing to do:

"My 360 broke too, bro"
"hahaha awesome bro"
"welcome to the gang"

Getting your 360 replaced was like winning a hero's patch - like being a proud member of the pack. A cool thing to happen.

MS really messed up the announcement of Xbox1. They really did. That's why many went and bought PS4. That's why we see all the PS3 AAA titles being remade for PS4 because Sony saw a surge in new players.

I never needed 360 because Gears of War was the only franchise i loved on it and i was not going to buy a console for one franchise - that too with a faulty hardware. I'm sure same was with 360 fans.

All in all, i want to say that MS sowed the seeds way back in 360 days, they had good games the first few years and that was why people never moved out back then. Also their friends had 360.

This gen Sony is also reaping from things they did last gen. They showed solidarity with the gamers. In spite of thousands of "PS3 IS DOOMED" articles, they continuously gave us amazing games after games until the time PS4 was announced. That's what people also saw. That's one of the huge reason people bought PS4.

Karma can be an angel too. Happy gaming.

t-hall7853683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

Funny part is, MS was actually more focused on games as well. I mean besides bloodborne, ps4 is just now hitting its stride with games this spring. Like another commenter mentioned, it's just a strong hate of the brand that hurts them. Sony can take missteps and they get swept under the rug. Ms takes a misstep and the media and fanboys riot the streets. They are both good aystems that do pretty much the same thing...except vr.

DeadManIV3682d ago

The problem with the Xbox One is that it seems I'm going to be able to play all of its exclusives on my PC. I own many consoles (Xbox, 360, wii, wii u, ps3, ps4, vita, etc) and a gaming pc - I bought those consoles for the exclusives. I use them to play games, nothing else (my pc is used for everything else). So, for me, why would I buy an Xbox one?

You can pretty much bet when MS finally gets around to rolling out another console they won't skimp on graphical specs. Hell they might go back to losing money per console in order to beef up the machine. In the end though who knows.

UltraNova3684d ago

They choose to miss that train this gen when they had the best chance they would ever get to really make a dent in Playstion's dominance.

That said I'm confident Sony will just keep out-powering them every gen.

In any case, next gen will be very unpredictable this time around, given recent news/rumors both MS and Sony are looking very keen on shaking things up pretty drastically when it comes to what we think a console is.

I for one I'm not that excited on things to come. I hope I'm wrong.

Forum_Pirate3684d ago

That exsists. It's called a PC. For $400 you can buy a computer that is better in every way than either console. They're trying to turn Consoles into PCs and PCs into consoles. Because whoever is in charge of MS is Roger Rabbit and completely devoid of sense.

Lennoxb633684d ago

People need to stop saying this. A $400 PC is not touching a console. Period. You are misinformed.

If you're talking about just the card, sure. But where's the rest of your PC at? The graphics card alone is not enough.

t-hall7853683d ago

Yes..please stop saying this. It's total bulls***. You cannot get the same value for 400...not at all.

Forum_Pirate3683d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

400 usd (exchange rate has improved since time of recording,) that computer can and will keep pace with or outperform modern consoles for gaming while being better at everything else. Most games are very bad at using multiple cores (though DX12 could change that) so all those extra cores doesn't amount to much performance in modern games, speed and architecture at the bigger deals.

If you're really worried you can tac on 50 bucks for a 960 or an I3 (which you can unlock on some MBs.)

So you're wrong, try again sweetie. I like consoles, I have every major console released since like 1995, but the only advantage they have is that they're easy to use and maintain.

agame9143683d ago

Wth you talking about?? The monitor alone will run you $200

SpinalRemains1383683d ago

For 400!?

Put the pipe down. Seriously. That is so incorrect that it is laughable.

Yes for $400. Watch the freaking video.

The moniter? Are you kidding? Are we adding the cost of the TV to the price of consoles now?

It does do media very well I will give it that but what Xbox Ones problem is that the investors and fat cats do not believe in the Xbone it has been nothing but money loss for them for several years. They have wanted Microsoft to close the Xbox division for awhile now. The reason games are going to PC is to make up from the loss of sales from the Xbox. If investors had there way there would be no Xbox.

Performance isn't an issue with XB1.

It's the game selection.

I'm very disappointed in the game available to play on my XB1. less than 5-10% even interest me at all.

So many boring lackluster filler games compared to the original xbox & 360.

* Good thing I have the NX to look forward to.

I've actually gotten more use out of my Wii U than the xb1, and I really love the XB1 and it's controller, but the games aren't there.

I won't see it because there are a few games I still want to play like Mass Effect, sea of thieves and such but yea it's been disappointing.

PS4 isn't much better but at least there are a few more original or unique games to play on that.

I don't regret my decision, I just wish there were more games to play that appealed to me.

* Can't wait for E3 this year to see what else is arriving soon though. I still have hope, but I need to be realistic about it and not make excuses.

Given the success that the Xbox 360 managed to have, and it was Microsoft's baby, I really think that it's not Microsoft as a company, but the decisions they were making in the beginning of the X1's introduction, and alas, so many people want to see the X1 fail, not Microsoft.

vanity293684d ago

I was taught that first impressions last. Seems to be true.

darthv723684d ago

So on the one hand you have the old phrase: you never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression.

On the other hand you have an even older phrase: never judge a book by its cover.

They sort of cancel each other out. You have a group of gamers who will not under any circumstances ever give a 2nd chance to the XB1 based on the 1st impression.

Then there is the other group of gamers who feel the changes that MS has been making warrant a closer look into the system under the ton of crap it was getting when it first came out. It is those who are trying to say to the rest that this system isn't so bad after all.

1st impression can go bad, but if that entity is really trying to make it up then it does deserve a 2nd chance. People have to be willing to see that and decide for themselves.

Unspoken3684d ago

Nice Darth

Unfortunately mob mentality rules this market. People can't make up their own minds and have to be told what to think. You are asking alot from people to use their brain.

ThatGuyDart3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

@Unspoken

Are you implying that anyone who doesn't give X1 a chance are incapable of using their brain?

Let's stop the pity party for this console. The fact is there could be multiple reasons why someone wouldn't want a X1. Just because someone doesn't care to own one doesn't mean they've fell into "mob mentality".

II__BONE__II3684d ago

The only reason the Xbox 360 had ANY success was that it launched a full year in front of the PS3 and the PS3's launch price helped MS as well.
The 360 was plagued with problems such as low capacity dvd disc's,Scratched disc and the RROD. The only thing that helped that box was Xbox live.
There was nothing special about the 360 itself, christ it even used a disc tray and you had to buy an expansion unit in order to watch HD movies.
The PS3 even trailing by a year managed to catch up to the 360 and in most places surpass it.

Xavior_Reigns3684d ago

Four peeps apparently disagree with reality.

rainslacker3684d ago

I think that's what this article is referring to though. It was MS who made the policies and design of the system to get what MS itself wanted. They kind of made the game console part either something for the back burner, or as part of something grander. There was so much with the initial design of the system that made me think that the higher ups at MS were making the system into something other than a game console, however, I do think that Mattrick did have a hand in it, as I never thought his interests really lay with gaming itself...at least not the same kind of focus on gaming that consoles typically market to.

DigitalRaptor3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

Xbox One is the most hilariously paradoxical console of all time because of Microsoft's original non-gaming focuses and distractions that cost them any and all chances of competing with the market leader in any serious manner this generation. It was called the Xbox One because of its original vision and the people who were behind all the bad decisions and intentions, and it's now a fairly different console to what it could have been today if people were less rightfully hostile to its introduction.

However, it's still called the XB1 and the ramifications and countless 180 spins are still being felt, and it seems that the PR nightmare is stuck on a never-ending loop. To this day, Microsoft are still being vague with their future vision that involves almost all of their exclusives games being launched on PC, the worry in first-party downsizing, and that kind of vagueness and lack of understanding what gamers want is what has caused so much controversy this generation. So I would say so. MS needs to deeply clarify their direction that involves Windows 10.

This year Nintendo has the NX focus, Sony has the PS4/PSVR focus and Microsoft only has its games, the W10/PC thing that people are not showing enthusiasm towards. I think Microsoft should just go a-fresh and gather a headstart on what is rumoured to be the PS4K (whatever the heck that might be).

Do you realize how ridiculous you people sound. I keep hearing your same bullshit excuse as to why you don't like the Xbox One. Everytime one of these journalists baits you PS4 gamers in, you jump on their wagon and start copying and pasting everything the author says over and over like a broken record. First it was DRM, then it was Microsoft are evil because they gave gamers the option to buy the console without Kinect. After that argument lost steam, it was resolution, then it was sales comparison. Then it was exclusivity and what defined a true exclusive. After that it was, why get a PC if you can buy an expensive rig to properly play Xbox One exclusives. Stupid quotes about how you were going to trade in your Xbox One to get a PC. The new buzz word is vision, and how Microsoft aren't making it clear to gamers. If you guys had been keeping up with any of the articles, you would know that Microsoft has been speaking to the entire gaming community about it's vision as time goes on. You people are embarrassing yourselves by pretending to own an Xbox One, on the verge of selling it, or claiming that you no longer want one now with all the changes. Just say that you don't like the console and start using your own words. By the way, the console never shipped with the original vision, so let it go.

SpinalRemains1383683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

They're not excuses.

All those reasons you listed are rooted in recent historical fact. The fact that MS had to reverse nearly all the awful anti-consumer 'visions' is all one needs in order to see that MS had it wrong. Their vision was vehemently opposed and many are to this day still put off by them.

The only excuses I see, are by those who are defending the parent company after all these recent debacles. Opponents to the 'vision' need not make any excuses since they're on the winning side of history. What exactly are opponents excusing?

You're delusional. In your mind, if someone doesn't like the Xbox One for any of the reasons you listed, they're making an excuse. An excuse? No those are the reasons.

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Price Update

Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate drops from $29.99 to $22.99 a month. PC Game Pass will also drop from $16.49 to $13.99 a month. Prices may vary by region.

Beginning this year, future Call of Duty titles won’t join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. New Call of Duty games will be added to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season (about a year later), while existing Call of Duty titles already in the library will continue to be available.

can't wait to hear how this is spun negatively.

darthv725d ago

Its nice there is some kind of drop... but is that all they really value CoD to be, a lousy $7 a month?

I was hoping it would drop by $10.

MisterBoots5d ago

That $7 equates to $84 per year - which is more than COD new ($69.99 + tax).

So - you can get the exact same thing - and save a few bucks - or you can skip COD and pocket the savings or use toward another game - or games if on sale.

That’s how I’m taking it - and is enough for me to sign back up after canceling the day it went to $29.99.

fr0sty5d ago

It's unlikely that COD is going to be the only title they stop offering day one, but we'll see how they play their hand.

VenomUK4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Including Call of Duty in Game Pass is just leaving money on the table. When the Elder Scrolls VI releases hopefully Microsoft doesn’t launch it into Game Pass. Then it can make more profits and use it give more value to Xbox console owners!

1Victor5d ago

Can’t wait to hear how this will be spun extremely positive. 🤣
I wonder why knowing Microsoft thick head something must has happened in the background in the levels of Xbox one and Kinect 🤷🏿

fr0sty5d ago

Any price cut is a good thing in this day and age, but it also reveals a flaw in GamePass' design that we've all been calling out for years... it's unsustainable, especially with day and date releases on new games. COD won't be the only game they exclude, they're setting a precedent with it that they'll likely expand upon in the future.

At least they're being realistic about it now. I bet in the future we're going to start seeing them try to subsidize the high price of new consoles by making you buy 2-3 years of gamepass with it to get the console cheaper. I'm still not sure that'll be enough to save either the hardware or gamepass, but we'll see.

Neonridr5d ago

price cuts are good, the removal of Call of Duty is clearly something they are planning to leverage. But considering everyone around N4G claims Call of Duty sucks, it's not a big loss now is it?

LucasRuinedChildhood5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Well, they're removing their biggest game from being Day 1 on the service so GamePass users can buy it instead. That's the intention.

They increased the price to $30, then removed COD and dropped it to still be above the old price.

It's an understandable compromise but the consumer Ultimately is getting less.

Think the calculation is that *most* COD users don't play that many games and aren't interested in GamePass. The GamePass users who do like COD would just buy it anyway. MS reportedly lost out a lot of money last year putting COD on GamePass.

Bathyj5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Well Call of duty could just be the beginning. What other games can they trim from the service to get the price down? How long before it's just the Xbox core first party studio games and not the one to everquired?

Create an interesting scenario with Call of duty as well. Will people wait a year to play it? Does that split the fan base? Will it hurt to Call of duty more than a benefits Game pass? These are all legitimate questions which we will find the answers to in the coming years

And I don't consider my post negative spin just realistic observation. At the very least this backtracking can be seen as an admittance that the previous strategy of gamepass was not sustainable as most of us said.

darthv725d ago

I'd get rid of the EA and Ubisoft+ too. That should bring the price down more. The only game from either of those parts of the service i played was jedi Fallen order / survivor. both of which i also bought on disc so it was more of a convenience i didnt have to put the disc in to play when i was playing them via remote play. And really that is why i still use GPU and PS+. its the convenience of having the games ready to play from a remote location. I havent picked up my consoles controllers in at least a few years. I guess that makes me a bad gamer, but so what. i'm still playing the games, just not physically on the machines themselves. GCloud and Portal are my go to now.

GhostScholar5d ago

They’ll say no one is buying game pass so they had to drop the price , even though it’s been extremely profitable.

Outside_ofthe_Box5d ago

Why remove CoD if it's *extremely* profitable then? Why even increase it to begin with?

Outside_ofthe_Box5d ago

Always funny seeing those that defended the price hike go "how you gonna spin this now!" after the price drops.

You should be thanking those that called it out. Obviously this is a good thing especially with everything increasing nowadays.

Also, what happened to the reason why that the Activision acquisition was good for gaming was that CoD would be day one on GamePass? Another backtrack on that I guess...

What removing CoD on GamePass shows, is that it's not sustainable for for the more popular and/or bigger budget games because of the sales you lose out on like people have been saying since inception. It never made sense to put CoD on there unless you thought it's popularity would draw in a lot of subscribers which it obviously didn't. And if it was as sustainable as people claim they wouldn't have increased the price while putting it on there in the first place.

In my region, it’s still more expensive than it was before the last price hike, but it’s a far more viable price point.

Losing Call of Duty from the service, honestly, has zero effect on me, and given they chose to make it so, it’s probably not the big seller they originally thought. Overall, it’s really good news, but I still think they have work to do on the tier structure, having Premium and PC at the same price point with different features feels odd.

Lightning775d ago

Yep take COD out. Them waiting a year is interesting but it make sense. They don't want certain ppl waiting 4 to 6 months they want fomo and maximum sales. Wait a year while the new one releases.

It’s not a requirement to buy games every month or whenever one is released. I don’t think people are going to spend $70+ on something they don’t care about.

GotGame8185d ago

I have talked about not being able to get into this game at launch. I still haven't given it another go, even though I think it looks great and has come a very long way since launch. Some people just want it to fail, even if it is a great game. I know why, we all do.

Starfield didn't just have the best sales for a week, but it was pre-ordered on PS store, with very nice numbers. I really need to start it again, on my PS5 though. So I can see how it is now. It has had some major updates.

I am looking forward to it all over again now.

Huey_My_D_Long5d ago

Its not that people want the game to fail. Its that Bethesda wont ever improve their games if you guys keep calling slop like starfield great games. Pure as that. Formulaic, chasing the trends, slop.

Like Bethesda has fallen off since FO4.

Ive a PC 4070, no interest in Starfield since the beginning since despite Bethesda owning some serious FPS legacy within their ranks...They just like seem to hate good shooting mechanics.

I dont see whats the appeal and thats ok. But how can you guys call it great? By what metric? The story? The Gameplay? The package all together? Hell I'm enjoying Crimson Desert, but I've got my issues with some design choices, but I do think the game is better as a whole than its individual parts. Is that the case for Starfield?
To be honest alot of you starfield stans dont make a great case for yourself, since I've never heard a starfield say what it is they enjoyed about it other just it being another Bethesda game that feels familiar yet new to them. Yall dont make the case on whats so great about starfield that keeps you coming back.
What does it do that makes it great that everyone like me is missing?

Like I wanted to like the Starfield, but after seeing its first trailer, it pretty much came out like I thought it was. Bethesda has been coasting off prestige for years now. and honestly starfield is proof of that.

CrimsonIdol5d ago

I'm fine with the game being janky Bethesda-core etc. For what it's worth it's more polished than previous games have been and the shooting mechanics are fine, feels pretty good even.

What I'm not fine with is it just being completely dull in every way. Even if they managed to resolve the structure of the game constantly sending you back and forth through maps and loading screens it's still going to be dull. The original The Outer Worlds did Fallout in space better, and that was hardly perfect (I haven't played the second one so I can't comment on that). At least The Outer Worlds had some interesting characters, enemies and locations. Starfield has none of that. They can argue that it's more grounded/going for realism or some nonsense (yet it's still doing Star Wars/Firefly style space travel) but it's fundamentally dull.

I dropped loads of money on a copy of this game at launch and I've no desire to get my money's worth out of it, I pretty quickly cut my losses and moved on. I don't know what happened to the writers for Bethesda, I presume they all moved on and have since been replaced by Jenny from accounting.

sweatyrich5d ago

I agree with @CrimsonIdol
I played the game to completed, but it's version of NG+ simply didn't appeal to me, so I never went back to it.
There's base-building, but it really serves no point, other than, there's base building. If you're into that, you have it, but I didn't touch it at all, as it wasn't part of the story ... At all.

The main character models are "ok", but the NPCs are just bad.

And IMO, people shouldn't be OK with a Bethesda game being janky. They're a big company, and should be jank-free by now!

MrBaskerville4d ago

I've given it another go and with the new more modular difficulty i managed to balance it a bit like Stalker 2 and it has been a lot more enjoyable this time around. The free roaming in space also helps a bit. Still prefer older Bethesda games, but it's growing on me
ever so slowly.

Jin_Sakai5d ago

Curious gamers. They’ll soon find out soon enough how trash it is.

Reaper22_5d ago

I dont think so. The games has been well received on PS5. Getting good scores too.

Jin_Sakai5d ago

Digital Foundry showed how bad the game runs even on PS5 Pro and crashes. It can’t even hold 60fps and not a looker to begin with. 🤷‍♂️

Grilla5d ago

I found out. I loved FO4 and wanted to judge Starfield for myself. I should have waited for a sale.

Putte5d ago

It's still as Bad as it was on Xbox. Of cause some playstation user's are curious and because there is a lot of them then the sales are gonna be somewhat okay for small time period. But still a very sad story what starfield turned out to be. Maybe the biggest disappointment in my gaming life.
