How Developers Make Video Games

Dennis Brännvall, the lead designer for Star Wars Battlefront, has recently ‘snapped’ at a troll on Twitter who called him and the team behind the game lazy. The tweet has since been taken down, although there a copy available, but this whole story raises a more interesting and fundamental question – what do game developers exactly do at work? What are their duties and responsibilities? Is making video games interesting and fun like playing them? Let’s have a look.

I bet they know a lot more than you do

Well I have bachelors degree in Computer Engineering soo I know pretty much about the matter ;)

lol I remember there was this girl on the lab struggling on creating a simple program on C++ it was all upset and cursing in a low voice, I was sitting next to her ask her can I help you was wrong ?: she begun telling : "I don't know what am I doing here I was supposed to be a Vetenerian ", I was like "da hell ?" lol

@masterfox

haha after seeing how some ports perform on PC (Unity, Black Flag, Batman Arkham Knight, Just Cause 3) I have no trouble believing that.

But it's weird at the same time since you hear a lot of people saying how hard it is to get hire as a developer at Ubisoft (I live in Montréal and one of their big stuidos is here), especially how they're infamous at making bad ports. Is programation that hard or it's more about how it is managed with really short deadlines and priorities?

Coding or programming is something you have to like, and the way thinking has to be very logic, sequential and have a lot patience, when start coding for example 1 hour you can have probably 100 lines of code already in and for the next hours probably at 1000 lines, and when you compile (execute your code) for your surprise it won't run and here's when the patience part of you kicks in cause you need to review all your code to try and search whats going on and why it doesn't run, a single "coma", ampersand, pound a letter can screw up thousands of code lines.

Unreal engine or other unity for example has this kinda friendly interface so you can create objects, add shaders, add lighning, etc. all of this stuff can be create by just some clicks here and there, but the thing is everything you do on this applications in the background a line code is created, so when you think you just created a simple object and a small scenario and looks plain and boring on the background already are hundreds and hundreds of line codes, and if you wan't something specific that you wan't your object to do and can't find it on the for example UE software well guess what you have to mess with your code and do some personal modifications.

Bad ports of games is mostly cause of pressure to the developers on finishing something, patience and enough time is key for programmers, CD projekt I totally understand them when they say "the game will be shipped when is ready" simple as that.

Thanks for the reply! Makes me eager and afraid to start my programming course lol

Star Wars Battlefront's Lead Designer hasn't ruled out Chewbacca, Obi-Wan, Yoda or Lando characters

Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Lando Calrissian could all be coming to the next round of Battlefront DLC after EA's lead designer Dennis Brännvall left a big hint about their possible inclusion in the future.

And when you think about it and the upcoming levels coming to the game, it makes complete sense.

Cool, a shooter with matchmaking only makes zero sense to me. Maybe now I can convince my friends to create a SWBF clan

Alexious3780d ago

I mean, custom matches were basically mandatory in 2003...Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with game developers.

Vhampir3780d ago

So were player-run dedicated servers. Thanks Modern Warfare 2.

"Can you stop selling umbrella with holes?"

"The disadvantages of holes are under investigation...."- Love EA

lsujester3780d ago

Disadvantages? HA!

When I see holes, I see increased maneuverability when the wind is blowing, as well as instant viewpoints to check and see if it's still raining. And not to mention the umbrella is lighter overall and is cost beneficial for consumers. If we'd filled in the holes now, we'd inevitably had to charge you more. Now you get to choose to pay to fill in those holes!

See sir, you look at holes and see disadvantages, when they are really beneficial features.

i really enjoyed this game in the short time that i played BUT i have since then moved on...this may be too little too late

odderz3780d ago

Hope the people still playing enjoy this!

Allsystemgamer3780d ago

I am. I found fun in the simplicity of it. Learning each weapon and what card combos go good with what map and weapons. It may not be as deep as many other games but atleast it's fun. I regret paying full price though.

Star Wars: Battlefront's unbalanced Hoth battle will be fixed, says DICE

GW:
Personally I think it's quite fitting that the Hoth Walker Assault battle that was playable in the recent Star Wars: Battlefront Beta was fairly unbalanced in favour of the Imperials, considering what happened in the movie, but I do understand how getting blaster-cannoned to death every five seconds might get frustrating.

It's not hugely surprising to hear that EA DICE is rebalancing the map, then. Lead multiplayer designer Dennis Brännvall admitted the current state of the level was "too tough", and revealed that the team was working on balance changes for the final release.

Maul_T_Pass3879d ago

Its kind of hard to fix spawn camping. Other than that it's not that hard to win with either side. Ive seen Rebels destroy AT-ATS right after the second section.

The problem is people are not playing the objectives as Rebels and not listening to audio clues on when to attack the walkers. Maybe they need to add flashing text at the bottom of the screen or something because people don't seem to get it.

And for godsakes stop letting the Imperials use turrets. They already have superior firepower and on top of that it makes no sense. Also if the Imperials have air support, the speeders are pretty much useless. Maybe offer an anti air option for the last section of the mission.

rdgneoz33879d ago

While the AT-ATs need a bit of a hp nerf, the spawn camping was annoying as hell. You can even attack the walkers if you get vader in your base, or a few imperials spawn camping the hell out of you. Buff the speeder's speed a bit and it should help out a little. The last bit of the match is pretty much tie fighters that can go twice as fast and turn on a time vs tug boats.

PreAtaric3879d ago

"Ive seen Rebels destroy AT-ATS right after the second section."

The last night of the beta I saw the rebels take out an AT-AT at the end of the first section.

"The problem is people are not playing the objectives as Rebels and not listening to audio clues on when to attack the walkers."

Bingo. It was much better by the time the beta ended. I'm not sure there's really that big of a balance issue, but more of a player issue.

jmc88883879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

I've been in multiple rounds, quite a few where BOTH AT-AT's were destroyed in the FIRST section.

Plus all you need is one Speeder to take out BOTH At-AT's in the third section.

The mode really wasn't unbalanced, it was just filled with noobs (everybody) who will get better once they understand the game.

Plenty did quite quickly, and things like this happened.

Plus you have to remember we were playing level 5 and below weapons and star cards. Higher stuff will be more powerful (like all games) and that means even more destruction faster.

As I said before on other threads, the Rebels LOSE the battle at Hoth, it's quite natural for the Imperials to have the upper hand, and the mode is even called 'Walker Assault'.

They could obviously tweak some things like more random spawns, perhaps a five second hand start, and maybe an additional orbital strike, and perhaps an additional speeder/a-wing, but overall the mode really wasn't that imbalanced.

Because it really is close to how it should be, if they tinker with it much, it'll flip so the rebels are heavily favored.

Oh yeah, I agree with not letting imperials steal the turrets. Good call.

Xristo3879d ago

Besides, like what Maul_T_Pass said, not letting the Imperials use turrets (makes sense), DICE should NOT change anything. If you are the Rebels, you should feel the pressure of overwhelming odds. They did get their asses handed to them in the movie. I really hope DICE thinks twice about this nerf, as all it takes is a little coordination to bring those AT-ATs down... not a nerf.
