The Division - Final Review | IGN

There’s definitely some decent meat to chew on in The Division, but it’s usually surrounded by too much gristle to enjoy it for long. Both in combat and out, there are some clearly good ideas, especially the tense and dangerous Dark Zone. But they’re not spread evenly or interwoven cleanly enough to form a cohesive, consistently enjoyable loop. Ultimately, The Division’s overly busy, conflicted design philosophies drown its best ingredients in a bland slurry that never quite comes together into a cohesive dish.

DashArrivals3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Ohhh SNAP !!! Regardless of this score, the game is a raging success. They need more end-game content though, ASAP.

Abash3724d ago

Ubisoft must be really happy that a review like this was posted more than a week after launch, won't hurt the game's success at all

4Sh0w3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Oh daaaayum, a 6.7 seems low from what I've heard....but after watching vids I've always wondered if the game would get stale quickly.

Skate-AK3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

That is what happens when you have an embargo that runs until launch on a Online-only game. Ubisoft did that on purpose. Sure other sites got their review out the same day or shortly after but honestly, I feel you should play the game for a week before reviewing it. Depending on the length of the game of course. For example, The Order 1886 wouldn't take long to review but a game like The Divison has much more content to cover.

Aeery3724d ago

A great review for those who hate the game ...
A bad review for those who love the game ...

Humans.

Btw, this game is fun if you love cover based shooter or co-op games.
Come on IGN score is pretty hipster ... Seriously guys 6.7 ?!

Never change IGN, you still are pretty dull all around :D

rdgneoz33723d ago

"That is what happens when you have an embargo that runs until launch on a Online-only game"

There was no embargo. Their servers launched the day before the game went live, and you can't log on when servers are not online. A day is not long enough to get a review out in time, let alone fight in the DZ with a full group of people to work with or against, or try out most instances / hard modes or such.

thekhurg3723d ago

I don't think they care. Servers are packed everyday and people actually playing it and not trolling the internet after having a blast.

frostypants3723d ago

How can someone provide an objective review of an online game when there's hardly anyone online? This isn't a conspiracy people. It's common sense.

Morgue3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

While your comment makes sense to the 60 people who agreed with you or the individuals that have been enjoying the game, it is only one persons opinion and even if that opinion does come from IGN. I am pretty sure there are other people who own this and may feel the same way but don't run a gaming site so their voice will only be heard in comment sections and will in turn get bashed for disliking it or agreeing with said review.

I myself haven't been really following this game, didn't play the beta and watched one twitch feed and the game " kind of " just seemed boring but I don't know maybe it is good. The thing is online only MP games are not really my thing yet I'm not gonna agree with score because I'll never play it.

Unspoken3723d ago

How's it final if he didn't play the upcoming raid?

Also, was he really hungry when he finished writing this piece?

AngelicIceDiamond3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

Wait a minute he gave a Destiny a 7.8 and this game a 6.7. He knocked out points for Destiny for weak story and LACK RPG ELEMENTS but made up for it in gameplay and visuals.

Lol ok so how the hell does Destiny get away with lack of story and lack of RPG elements and yet score nearly and 8? But yet The Division has deep RPG elements and a story that at least attempts to keep you engaged and uncover interesting intel about what has happened in the game, and give players insight to everything and yet still score just shy of a 7?

"Static World" right because Destiny's world was ever evolving and changing.

I agree feeling empty Destiny world does have randoms inhabiting the world that you can team up with randomly I feel like its kind of a trade off because you can Matchmake in real time unlike Destiny.

"Repetitive" Destiny put a whole new meaning to repetition....

He complains about the game not rewarding you enough woooooooooow this game unlike Destiny rewards you accordingly its not anything super crazy but you get rewarded and rewards are hell of a lot easier to attain than Destiny.

The main gripes is the fact Destiny lacked story and RPG elements and yet still score way higher than TD despite the fact TD has both even outfits and close are done better and you can craft.

Vince Ingenito needs to stop reviewing, like now.

SonyWarrior3723d ago

this score is more than fair. i canceled my preorder after playing the beta got boring real quick... i would have gave it a 5/10

I can bet people won't stick around long enough to see that new content .....the game is as bland as porridge with water.

xX-oldboy-Xx3724d ago

Not really - I think the encounters in the dark zone are extremely tense and require a little planning. Great fun for me and my mates. What works for me doesn't necessarily work for others. That's all good, but there is fun to be had.

Omeganex99993723d ago

Destiny would like to prove you wrong, my friend.

UltraNova3723d ago

@Omega

What Destiny proves is that people actually like porridge with water..No?

Perjoss3723d ago

People said the same thing about Destiny and that game is doing fine.

zidane13413723d ago

in your opinion. you know how many level 30 friends i have? about 5. theyve all had a blast and are happy to do endgame unlike destiny. this is the most fun ive had on my console in a long time, sorry hater. by the way how many games hsve been like this?0. so its hardly bland.

turdburgler10803723d ago

The guy who reviewed this game gave evolve a 9 out of 10 so he's not exactly IGN's best hitter.

dmeador3723d ago

I rated my time with the Alpha about a 6, and got a million people who haven't played it on my case saying I was crazy. For me it was enough to know I wouldn't really like it, and all the things this review hits on were the same things I had an issue with then.

It all comes down to if you like it play it, if you dont.... dont, haha.

Seraphim3723d ago

no doubt. I can definitely see a group sticking with it but a vast majority will dump this game in no time. After a week of milking play I'm a bit bored with what it offers. Typical Ubisoft repetitive Encounters, Missions are weak and few, Side Missions aren't terrible but again, repetitive, small map. This game doesn't have half the legs Destiny has. Plus technical problems. Lag popping up, tons of pop in all week. It's not a terrible game, it is fun and a decent game it's just flawed and terribly dull.

Challenge modes are solid end game for now.
First raid hits in April.
Second raid in May.

All raids are free updates. But this is IGN, they probably got destroyed in Challenge modes. (Bare in mind I didn't see them show any footage of Challenge mode in that video)

TheSaint3723d ago

How is something free when you've already paid for it?

All this is is delayed content wrapped up to look like they are giving you something.

zidane13413723d ago

because just because we bought this game doesnt mean we arenbow entitled to all future content being free. at least they are throwing out content for all very soon, theyve been open about it and have talked about a lot of future free content. how can you seriously look at it and go "well ive bought the game" so im seriously entitled for the developers to not get anything for there hard work, those filthy workers." thats pretty rude thesaint.

zidane13413723d ago

@thesaint, yeah they purposely kept extra content back, real smart logic your using.

n4rc3723d ago

Its free because it wasn't in the game you bought and you won't be charged for it.. Kind of a simple concept no?

Its content held back while they launch the core game and handle those more pressing issues first? Or it simply wasn't ready yet or needed some changes based on launch data..

Hell.. I'd bet the vast majority of users aren't even 30 to begin worrying and endgame

Maszko3723d ago

Seems like people are obsessed with dogging games because they "don't give us the content in the game that should've been included in the base game." It seems to me that this is a lot of people's first mmo. Where you release the base game/expansion with a hard dungeon difficulty where you can get good gear and they give you some time to build up your really good gear before they release the very hard raids and it builds your excitement and helps the grind when you're thinking about how you need the best challenge mode gear to be able to even think about being helpful in the raids. They didn't include it on purpose, so people can actually play the game and get the good challenge mode gear BEFORE you dive into the end game content all at once. They're giving EVERYONE a chance to hit 30 and at least get some decent gear for the new raids. Just like every mmo.

And.... ign gave the "featurles" Street Fighter V an 8/10.

Yeah, ok.

And... I've been playing The Division over 12 hours "solo"! No other mode and I'm only a level 9. This game is a blast!

I won't give your tired site the click, the score is enough. This is further evidence that your site isn't competent enough to objectively rate a game.

@dragonddark,
I am most certainly not comparing a fighter to an open world game, I've been gaming far to long for that. However, ign isn't consistent in their methodology of reviewing games.

And, I don't want to hear that pos excuse that "someone else" reviewed "said game or games".

DragonDDark3724d ago

You're comparing a fighting game to an open world game...

Pongwater3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

"This is further evidence that your site isn't competent enough to objectively rate a game."

Just one more review that tells me I'm right to ignore reviews, good or bad, no matter what site they're on. I'm loving the game, as are many other people, so… whatever. It's fun both solo and co-op, and I love that a bigger team makes the missions harder. Looks great too.

Blastoise3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

"This is further evidence that your site isn't competent enough to objectively rate a game."

Why? Just because you don't agree? He gave it a 6.7, which is above average. He didn't give it a 1/10.

Never played The Division retail release, but playing the beta wasn't overly entertaining

Majister-Ludi3723d ago

Wow sure are taking someone else's opinion personal lol.

wellard3723d ago

Both different genres mate. Come on, you can see that surely....

Onenyte3723d ago

This same reviewer gave Evolve a 9/10

jus saying.....

ifistbrowni3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

not only IGN, but the same exact reviewer. He also gave Evolve a 9.3 or something. It's hypocritical for him to say Division lacks "interesting" content after giving games like Street Fighter and Evolve high reviews without mention of a significant lack of content.

Vince's opinions of games in reviews are wild. I thought, without a doubt, he'd give Division a 8-9+/10 based off the recent games he's reviewed.

I couldn't care less about review scores though. I'm surprised by this one, but still don't care about it.

I am thoroughly enjoying the game. Once I get all high-end gear and i'm satisfied with my level 30 character's DPS/Health/Skill then the game will likely be over for me (until incursions). Though, the loot is designed a lot like Diablo where theres always going to be a better piece of gear than the one you're wearing. It's a shame it doesn't have Diablo-esque End-game akin to Rifts. I'm already clearing "Challenging" missions in 4 player co-op with my mostly equipped purple character.

truly a sad day in gaming when gamers refuse to speak with their wallets

Khaotic3724d ago

I did. I loved the beta and bought the game, spoke with my wallet. Sad day when others don't share your opinion. You know this reviewer also gave evolve a 9.0. He is a moron.

_-EDMIX-_3724d ago

How do you know they didn't though?

Buddy...we all won't like the same thing, no one is bashing you for not playing it, so why bash those who do?

I didn't buy this game either, but I'm not bashing those that did. Many who didn't like it didn't buy it, many who did like it did. You suddenly know 100% of all gamer's world wide? Are you serious right now?

We have free will for a reason, please respect other's.

Lenns3724d ago

So you're basing this game off only IGN's review? Majority gave the game a good score, but I assume you just chose to ignore those.

-Foxtrot3724d ago

@Lenns

Most people gave Evolved a good score, Resident Evil 5, Final Fantasy 13, dmc, MGV

pompombrum3723d ago

Was thinking the same, they've done so many little promotional videos for the game leading up to the review that I was certain it would get a 9/10 with the headline "better than Destiny" or something. Having said that though 6.7 seems a little harsh.

OpieWinston3723d ago

Highest selling New IP isn't going to be hurt by IGNs awful reviews? Seriously no one should take this guy seriously?

Thin End Game? Doesn't show any footage of Challenge modes
1st raid hits NEXT month in free update and second raid the month following.

IGN always does honest reviews based on how bad they are at games.

MoveTheGlow3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

@OpieWinston

Movies that are rated in that range can still rake in revenue also. The difference is that most moviegoers understand that a 6.5/10 is still not that bad, and if it's their kind of movie, they'll see it.

We gamers need to decouple ratings from sales. It's perfectly cool to buy, play, and like a game with lower ratings than something else! We are not the Metacritic scores of the games we like. Critics are critics. They help, but they're not our overlords.

Good point with the updates, though. It's a bit like reviewing Street Fighter 5 or Splatoon at launch - does that score exist in perpetuity, or does it get updated? That's something I really like about Polygon.

wellard3723d ago

The raids aren't free updates. You have already paid for them. They are late out of the door. Thus the game is technically incomplete. Stop saying that ubisoft if giving them away for free when they blatantly aren't. At least 1 raid should have been shipped with the game.

Pocketaces1113723d ago

@wellard and others that keep saying the raids aren't free blah blah blah.

I wish you guys would not be so pessimistic. They are free because Ubisoft chose to make them free. They could have done it as part of the season pass and they did not. That is a choice. You saying they should have been part of initial release is an opinion based on nothing but your personal thought of what you should be entitled to.

The other side of the coin is MAYBE they didn't include them to see how the game worked with everyone playing and so they could make tweaks to the raids to make them play better for all. In stead of releasing them early and not be as enjoyable. Maybe this is the right choice for the gamer.

Ubisoft delayed this game and probably spent more money doing so and IMO created an enjoyable experience. Most likely aided by the delay. In turn this has paid of for them and in turn me. I can't get enough of this game looking forward to the future content and I have already gotten more gameplay then I have gotten for other games I've paid the same price for and I'm only at level 15/11.

The other reason they probably delayed the raids is to allow more people to get maxed out levels so more people can enjoy the raid before spoilers are leaked. To me still good move not all of us can max our character out in a few days like others because of jobs, families, etc. this way our whole group has time to experience the game and get reader for our first run thru's together.

JeffGUNZ3723d ago

@ Wellard

Stop. Destiny did the same thing with the VoG. They waited a month or so to give people the opportunity to reach the soft cap. Majority of the people who play this game are not unemployed or single and sit at home all day and get to level 30 in the first few days. It makes sense to focus on the servers and basic post launch bugs before throwing a raid out there. A lot of developers do this, they give the community some time to experience the main game and reach the soft cap before the raid like event comes. They are coming April then another in May. I understand I paid for them already with the retail purchase, but that doesn't negate his point. IGN is writing a "final" review of a game where the meat of the endgame content hasn't even been released yet lol.

wellard3721d ago

I'm not in a division post to talk about destiny. Although I found the way bungie dealt with that just as sad.

starrman19853723d ago

Absolutely loving it! What confuses me about this review is that Diablo 3 fell prey to exactly the same faults, was plagued with connectivity issues at launch but netted a 9.5 from IGN! (don't get me wrong though, I LOVE Diablo 3 and it has evolved into a masterpiece)

I can see the flaws in The Division and I am really excited to see how they iron things out. I guess that's why games like this do get a tougher time, they have games like Diablo to take ideas from.

Aceman183723d ago

Meh I don't care what they gave it, I stopped taking reviews seriously a long, long time ago. I have free will to deem which games are worthy of my time and money, and I'm truly enjoying the game faults and all.

Got to 30 yesterday and I'm working on finishing my base of operations, then I'll hit up the dark zone for some goodies if I don't get massacred in there haha.

Bottom line if you don't like the game don't buy it, if you do buy it you've the right to do whatever you want.

Genuine-User3723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

There's plenty of people that seem to be siding with this score, which is fine but don't forget that The Division has also received some great scores and people like myself have been enjoying the game since launch.

On a side note, the same reviewer - Vince Ingenito - scored Evolve a 9/10 and called it amazing. Just something for you lot to think about.

JeffGUNZ3723d ago

Yeah, his review was poor for this game if you read it. Game is based off of NYC and he's made that the game map is a grid like form. It's F'N NYC! Seems not to mention you can go underground in subway system, get on the roofs of many buildings and explore apartments and what not.

He also complains about having to walk around from Point A to Point B in an OPEN WORLD game. Either he made his mind up before playing it or he is not understanding this is an RPG at heart first then a TPS. For what the game sets out to do, it succeeds.

Genuine-User3723d ago

@JeffGUNZ

I agree with everything you have said.

joab7773723d ago

This is the crux of every mmo. Theu spend 5 yrs making content that people blow through in a week or two. Then the pressure is on to keep up.

I agree w IGN's review, but give it a pass b/c it isn't a sp open world game. Bungie us suffering from this right now, people clamoring for more content, and being unable to keep up.

The Division will hit this wall, when everyone starts bitching about new content, how to pay for it, imbalances etc. Launch is only the very, very beginning for an mmo.

The division is neither.

Definitely what is due. The division doesn't have great gameplay moments at all. Weird third person shooter with even bland mechanics, like no crouch or prone.

Vegamyster3724d ago

Tomb Raider, Gears of War, Uncharted and plenty of other 3rd person shooters don't have couch or prone either

bixxel3724d ago

Since they aren't MMO shooters.

Vegamyster3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

I'd hardly consider The Division is an MMO, the maximum amount of players in the PvE area is 4 and 24 in the dark zone.

_-EDMIX-_3724d ago

Bixxel- "Since they aren't MMO shooters" nope.

BFBC1 and 2 didn't have prone and read the developer notes to find out why.

Its for a very logical design reason. It wasn't just for lolz bud.

@Vega- I would very much consider The Division an MMO, you are basically doing the same concept as an MMO and I've never seen the concept based on a degree of or amount of player etc.

If its based on the community and runs off a server, I would define that as an MMO.

Vegamyster3723d ago

@_-EDMIX-_

"you are basically doing the same concept as an MMO"

Like? There is loot, grinding, skills, customization, flashy numbers, fetch quests in games like Diablo (online only on PC), torchligh and Borderlands then you have games like BF4 that support 64 players on one map. By definition a MMO is "A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG or MMO) is an online game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously in the same instance (or world)."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

An example of this in the shooter genre is Planetside 2 which can have battles involving over 1000 people.

To be fair, prone in a 3rd person game is actually quite rare. Metal Gear, Socom, Ghost Recon and Sniper Elite but there are not a whole bunch. Hunderends more don't have it than have it.

Pongwater3724d ago

"The division doesn't have great gameplay moments at all."

The cover mechanics are pretty bad. There is no lean or really any control from behind cover just stick, or pop all the way up to aim. You are batter off not using the cover mechanics and just peaking out your self by strafing. The ai is so terrible it makes strategy pointless and the gun play feels like crap. In games based on shooting things i like the shooting mechanics to be done well. At least destiny got that part right. I was very disappointed in the beta. This was a game i was very excited for. I also don't find the dz very tense at all. Don't get in fights with people when you have good loot. When you don't, who cares. Pvp is boring because of the poor gameplay. A good story and a feeling you are playing an mmo is enough for some to enjoy a game, but its not my thing.

sullynathan3723d ago

How many third person shooters actually have crouch or prone?

overrated443723d ago (Edited 3723d ago )

What is your problem with this game and other people enjoying it? I see you on every review either praising the website for giving it a lower than average score or arguing because a score is too high? Why do you dislike this game (something that you seemingly haven't played) so much? And why are you arguing so vehemently with people that do enjoy it? What exactly is compelling you to hate this game so much??? Like, why do you personally want this game to fail so badly? (Which it hasn't see: fastest selling new IP ever).

ZombieKiller3723d ago

Complaining about not having Crouch or prone is like complaining about not having a stealth mode in Call of Duty. If the game doesn't need it why have it?

overrated443723d ago

The dude doesn't actually know why he doesn't like the game, he just doesn't like it and it makes him mad that other people enjoy it. Vegamyster3723d ago

The graphics, the dark souls type play in the dark zone and how easy it is to go from pve to pvp is nothing short of amazing.

And joining friends is so easy.

wsoutlaw873723d ago

Dark souls type gameplay? What?

phoenixwake3723d ago

I believe what DEEBO was referencing is the risk/reward factor in the Dark Zone.

Similarly to Dark Souls, you can try to go further and get more dangerous in effort to get bigger or better rewards, but you run the risk of getting killed and losing it all.

In the Dark Zone, you drop whatever you've collected there and depending on the players or mobs around, you may never get it back.

wsoutlaw873722d ago

Neither of those games are anything like what you said lol. In the division you get loot, then exract it, get loot extract it. In dark souls you dont have a risk reward factor. Unless you are referring too just playing through the game being a risk reward. Have you played dark souls? There is no risk reward in the dark zone. You walk in with nothing so theres no risk for going in and getting loot. Once you get it you extract it; nothing crazy.

Kane223723d ago

joining friends is easy. as long as you guys are around the same levels. i hate that this game scales with the highest level than the person who is the host. its not all that "easy" to play with everyone.
