Vive And Rift Recommended PC Specs Compared

Upload VR:
Competing VR headsets from Facebook and HTC have now placed most of their cards on the table. As of today, it is known when both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will ship, what they will cost, and what will be inside each box. As neck and neck as things are, an informed consumer needs to look at every point of comparison before making the final purchase. A recent update to the Vive’s official website reveals the PC specs required to run the system and may cause that pro and con list in your notebook to grow even longer.

The Vive specs mean I would only have to get a new gfx card, whilst the Rift requires I get a new gfx card, a new cpu and 3 usb3 slots. Considering the Vive has more advanced tech and the motion controllers are bundled, I think I'm getting one of them now. I still haven't completely made up my mind though.

I'm kind of torn, as well. My concern is that Oculus will somehow lock out other devices from playing their exclusives.

I have the Oculus pre-ordered, but it won't ship until May. If I pre-order the Vive, I get it in April AND it comes with the motion controllers. Hm...

Muadiib3734d ago

Well the Oculus store will work on other devices, that's been confirmed already. If Oculus are total dicks they will find a way of making certain games not work on the Vive, hopefully it doesn't come to that, especially as everything the Oculus can do the Vive can do and more.

More so we may see some Vive games not work on the Oculus headset, Valve already announced Steam VR will work on other headsets, but there are certain things a Vive can do than no other headset can replicate.

Hopefully this all gets sorted out before I can afford one myself :p

It makes no sense for Oculus or anyone to lock software to a particular model of hardware, unless there's clear limitations of one over the other (i.e, Vive games that require room-scale spaces and tracking won't be compatible with Oculus, etc).

The goal for everyone here should be to make the hardware as transparent as possible to help make the market flourish.

There's not a lot of money in selling VR headsets. The real money is going to come from selling VR software and services.

While I completely agree, Pandamobile, I hope they don't focus so much on market share of the devices. Oculus (Facebook, Valve, and Sony all seem to want the technology to flourish in the future.

From what I have read the Rift CV1 is more polished while the Vive seems more like the older Rift dev kits. Also, while I do have a large room for the Vive you will notice that you always see someone managing the cables for the Vive user, I don't think my wife is going to want to do that for me. Not to mention the thought of my wife laughing at me while I stand there with the motion controllers making a fool of myself. Based on all of that I prefer the sit down experience of the Rift.

Yetter3734d ago

sweet, I can run either no problem. Think I'm leaning towards the Rift though as the Vive seems to requires me to pretty much dedicate a room to VR, which isn't really feasible... well it is, but my wife won't allow it

Pandamobile3734d ago (Edited 3734d ago )

You don't need a full sized room for the Vive. You can use it in the same manner that you'd use the Rift; sitting at your desk.

The only difference is that the Vive tracking volume scales up to room-sized if you have the space for it.

Yetter3734d ago

but I feel like the room tracking is just wasted if I can't make use of it, so why wouldn't I just get the rift?

Pandamobile3734d ago

So you have room-scale as an option in case you want to use it later?

That, and the Vive actually ships with the VR controllers, rather than shelling out $150 down the line for Oculus Touch controllers later in 2016.

Muadiib3734d ago

Also the size you need is tiny actually, as demonstrated by a Vive developer.

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
