Have Oculus and their many competitors left it too late and too expensive for virtual reality to become anything more than a passing fad?

What you have here in this article is nothing but a load of hot air. Downplaying VR, but uplifting AR.I have news for you article writer (no journalist):

Others have not complained of it being heavy. In fact, PSVR is rather light. He also doesn't seem to have gotten his hands on the final OCULUS or VIVE to come to a conclusion of it being uncomfortable.

See this:I'm guessing people have seen driveclub already.I have.

And this is Eve Valkyrie
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Now, would you want to be immersed in something like this?Or interact with your refrigerator, couch or wall seeing pop ups?Somehow,he's not being truthful with us.Do you see people disoriented sitting down?NO! But,I'm going to be truthful with him/article writer....

Microsoft misled you and are lying to you like they did with kinect. That field of view is a lie.it doesn't surround you. The view is like looking at a 15inch monitor. It being at E3 was a SHAM to try and overshadow VR because Microsoft has no solution but we're trying to one up Sony. Are there games coming for it? Where are the announced developers? There aren't any. And he talks about price. Hololens will cost even MORE than VR. But he claims it will get better mass adoption.

The problem with VR is not the tech. It's not the games. It's not the optional motion controls. The problem is judging a product before final release. The problem is assuming all VR sets will be that expensive when only one company has announced. The problem is judging games before we even know what are the launch games.

But the main problem are the detractors who we know are either biased towards one system.Or can't afford any of them.Or bash an OPTION that's not forced. When the tech gets refined, it will get cheaper. When the tech is refined, it will be as thin as that new LG TV tech at CES
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Or Samsung's oled tech
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Future VR headsets will be thin as paper and worn like glasses. But it's got to START SOMEWHERE.

And I'm not hating on AR.I like it as much as VR.I just know the Microsoft misleading speak of "holograms" or "immersive" are a lie. And it's a heavy face computer that will get thinner in time. But at least VR developers are being REAL about it.

well Hololens is designed for completely different purposes than PSVR. I wouldn't even compare the two. Think of it more like Google Glass or something if you want to compare it to something.

Hololens isn't designed for full immersion like Rift, PSVR or Vive is. It is meant to be used in situations where you are still aware of your surroundings.

That being said, I can't wait for VR and I have my Rift preorder ready to go. Following PSVR closely as well.

Both technologies are being merge convergence technologies anyway. VR headsets are now including camera view out capabilities now included for such purpose of AR.

New headsets @ CES were being shown off with such capabilities, as a matter of fact most smartphone headset VR housing sets now have rear smartphone removal panel built into the housing so as to be able to include AR!

Downside to me is I have a family and game in thee living room. I'm not going to sit here with a visor on.
Few years ago as a teenager in my bedroom I'd be all over this!!

jb2273795d ago

The visuals output to the television as well..I actually think it could make for a fun family experience, sitting on the couch laughing at one another & passing the visor around. Also I'm assuming the audio could output to the tv as well so you could still communicate w/ them while you are playing VR. There are ways to give anything a more social aspect, I think its only a matter of time until VR gets is Wii Sports type game that is fun for a family in a living room.

Clown_Syndr0me3795d ago

Not being able to see my kids around me etc is just a no for me. I'm unsocial enough when I'm gaming, I don't need this in my life.
Maybe in a few years when it's cheaper as I'd only use it when home alone which is very rare.

PsyMonk3y3796d ago

I really hope they don't ballz this up i've been waitimg for VR since i was a child this could be the revolution in gaming we've been waiting for.

Saying that it does look like Sony is giving VR its full support i just hope the games are good enough that the consumers jump on board with the idea.

Bring on:

Portal 3 VR
No Mans Sky VR
Ark Survival VR

Check out Robinson The Journey by Crytek. It looks amazing. Almost like Portal and Ark had a baby. PSVR exclusive I think.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing43d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9243d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit43d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing43d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9243d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
