Ubisoft Dev Claims The Division Is Maxing Out PS4, X1 And PC, "Utilizing Every Tiny Little Cycles"

There has been much speculation how Tom Clancy's The Division will perform on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, specially given Ubisoft's somewhat disappointing "tech" record on modern consoles and gaming PCs.

Destiny was 1080p on the X1 but if the division has better story and more content I'll be happy with a drop to 900p to be honest for a better experience

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3776d ago

Yeah, Im the same. I HATE 720p (looking at you Battlefield and Battlefront) but 900p is acceptable and easy on the eyes. The game does look really good especially the draw distance and LOD!

blitz06233776d ago

Hey Ubisoft, just because you're maximizing the systems doesn't mean you're doing it efficiently. I betcha AC Unity maximized all systems too

I hate 720p too but as a PS4 owner, I've thankfully forgotten what this looks like.

UltraNova3775d ago

PS3 was said to be maxed out by God Of War 3...then a couple years later The Last of Us proved that optimization is king any day.

Pointless article.

Crimzon3775d ago

If the current build of The Division is maxing out PS4/PC/XB1, then what was the original version of the game maxing out? Was the original gameplay footage of The Division maxing out hardware from the future that doesn't even exist yet? Because it looked a hell of a lot more impressive than the downgraded mess we have today.

Dee_913775d ago

@blitz0623
Exactly. I hate when developers say this. The objective shouldn't be maxing out anything. The objective should be to optimize so that it doesn't max out. All this is basically saying is " this is the best we could do "

mark_parch3776d ago

when you look at how much better witcher 3 looks its hard to believe they are utilising the consoles efficiently

thisgamer5033776d ago

Whoa now, they said they're maxing it out. Nobody said anything about efficiency lol

BABY-JEDI3776d ago

You know they aren't ! They are obviously spinning their promotional BS.

Goldby3776d ago

cant close car doors in Witcher. thats whats maxing out the systems

nitus103776d ago

I can run some benchmarks on my PC that will max out CPU and/or Memory and/or even I/O however that does not mean I am effectively maxing out my machine.

It never ceases to amaze me how some developers claim to have maxed out this or that console or even PC. When I hear that my first thought is they are probably very lazy coders and have given little if any thought to efficiency.

dRanzer3776d ago

they maxing out with THERE ENGINE,
you can take ps2 game and maxing him on ps4,he will not be so beautiful I'm telling you

NarooN3776d ago

I can code a custom notepad program that uses 100% of your CPU and GPU, does that mean it's a good program?

clockward1003775d ago

That what i been talking about the witcher looks amazing

Muzikguy3776d ago

Every time I see a headline like this, I always discredit what they have to say. Bad or lazy developers can max out a system. It doesn't mean they're any good

jwillj2k43775d ago

They're just setting themselves up to have a valid reason for leaving out content, lowering the resolution or both.

"Due to maxing out the consoles, they couldn't handle the experience, so we brought the resolution down 900p cutscene, 576p in game to have a steady framerate" /s

Meishpizza3776d ago

Resolution isnt everything, this engine does orders more than the Destiny engine. Lighting, true dynamic weather, and many other features. I am will sacrifice for a few lines of resolution for these features. Ill be buying on PS4 though so it will more than likely be 1080p on PS4. Also the whole world is loaded in the initial boot there's no load screens here either. Destiny's engine is based off of the Halo engine which is pretty dated now.

garrettbobbyferguson3775d ago

Resolution is very important. Resolution is the difference between staring at a beautiful crisp image and a small blurry little window. The same can be said for FPS. You either have the option of a slide show with missing animations, missing frames, that looks awkward or a beautiful smooth experience that reacts precisely to your input and looks great on the eyes.

You think content is what causes terrible frame rate and resolution? No, it doesn't work like that. Graphical fidelity does. Because these developers are trying to push all these unnecessary graphical options on systems that just shouldn't be at that level. It has nothing to do with weather.

otherZinc3775d ago (Edited 3775d ago )

Ok, if this Division Developer is going to max all platforms out:
Will they use Dedicated Servers on the XBOX ONE?
Will they use Cloud Computing on the XBOX ONE?

cmgs3775d ago

Dedicated servers = cloud computing, and yes.

XisThatKid3775d ago

Whaaaah?.......How are you supposed to make any kind of MMO without dedicated servers in turn cloud computing? Please answer.

Domovoi0ng3775d ago

you should never be happy with something like that. 1080p 60fps should be minimum.

stuna13776d ago

Highly doubt that on any front! On consoles unless they've learned the smallest nuances of not 1 but both consoles highly unlikely. On PC's even more unlikely, simply because there are too many different configurations.

Maybe what they mean is that they can't optimize their own code any futher!?

Lamboomington3776d ago

Sure, devs find better ways to utilize power as time goes on, but that doesn't mean what they're saying is wrong.

They are utilizing these machines to the best of their ability, squeezing every bit of performance out of them.

Ofcourse, on PC, that doesn't make that much sense, for the reason you stated.

emad-E-three3776d ago

Until Santa Monica releases God Of War on PS4 that's the moment the console is fully utilised, pure marketing bs

uth113776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

I think that's what it means- their code as written is pushing the hardware to the max.

That doesn't mean that they've written the most efficient code possible, which could involve rewriting large chunks of it.

pumpactionpimp3776d ago

All platforms it's on are x86 architecture, which has been around for a long time. Judging by ubisoft pc optimization on prior games, I would agree with your statement.

Eonjay3776d ago

You can max out any platform. Doesn't mean its optimized to the max. Two wildly different things.

BABY-JEDI3776d ago

I'm amazed someone disagreed with you. A case of spammers in pajamers.

Neonridr3776d ago

To be honest it still looks really good based on the X1 footage we were seeing in this video.

Torn between getting this on PS4 or my new PC.

thorstein3776d ago

That is a serious choice. I really want the big screen experience with my friends. I think I am, going PS4 for this.

thekhurg3776d ago

Yeah, gonna be more people playing on consoles, 100% going PS4 with this game.

3776d ago
Utalkin2me3776d ago

Im getting Pc and PS4 versions.

Neonridr3776d ago

I will probably end up going with PS4. Even though I might be sacrificing a bit in terms of image quality, I am not a graphics whore. So I would rather have it on a platform I know that I have some friends on..

who wants to go through all the trouble of meeting new people all over again? :P

die_fiend3775d ago

If you have a choice, get it on the console where it's going to look and perform better.

If all of your friends have it for the other console, you need new friends :)

"Torn between getting this on PS4 or my new PC."
That is the killer for me. If I get it, I'd love put it on my pc but the only way I'll get it is if I play with the guys i usually play multiplayer games with but they're on ps4!

ShadowKnight3776d ago

It's hard to believe that their maxing out the PC version. So their maxing out my powerful GPU

ninsigma3776d ago

Well I don't believe that for a second anyway. It looks damn good but whatever about consoles, they aren't maxing out pc lol

Neonridr3776d ago

@ninsigma - exactly my dilemma. But I bet on my PC I can crank the settings up and get a silky smooth 60fps @ 1080p....

decisions decisions..

reallyNow3776d ago

so many cheaters on PC, the only games worth playing on that platform are single player indie games.

babadivad3776d ago

I love playing games on my PC.The struggle is real. Tough choice.

sorane3776d ago

@reallynow

Sounds like someone who has never played games on PC. Looking at your ps4 fanboy comments confirms my first sentence as fact.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 3776d ago
ninsigma3776d ago

It all depends on of you plan on playing with them a lot. If you're mainly gonna solo it then you're probably better of getting on pc otherwise ps4 so you can play with your group. I'm still in 2 minds on if I'm actually getting it but if I do it's only to play with others and seeing as they're only on ps4 I don't have much of a choice :p
Gonna try convince them to get PCs before wildlands comes out xD

mochachino3776d ago

Me too, my PC is connected to my TV so both offer the big screen, 7.1 surround, comfy couch controller, experience.

I have more friends on PS4. But I'd have to renew my plus membership. So conflicted.

quaneylfc3776d ago

PC, if you can run it.

Why wouldn't you get it on PC?

Neonridr3776d ago

playing with my friends on PS4 vs playing with a bunch of strangers on PC.

Wanna be my PC friend? :P

quaneylfc3775d ago

I don't play on PC.

I have an Xone, a Ps4 and a Wii U lol

iggsta3o53776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

Two 50in TVs on my PC via HDMI problem solved PC it is.

Kribwalker3775d ago

The Pc version appears to demolish the console version, but if you have more friends on consoles then that would be the way to go

Neonridr3775d ago

yeah. I would love to crank it up in the graphics department and enjoy it in all its glory.

But it is a game I want to experience with others..

Findingcrybabies3776d ago

Ubisoft can't even make a complete game and release one that works properly, but they can max out the current gen hardware. LOL.

Lamboomington3776d ago

um, yeah, why not :P

They could be maxing out the hardware whether their game is polished or not, whether it has enough content or not. Those are unrelated.

Findingcrybabies3775d ago

I understand this is just PR to sell games because many people know Ubishit is garbage these days, but even going along with what you say I think its more than fair to say that their priorities are terribly messed up.

Christopher3776d ago

Wish devs would stop using words like this. There's no such thing as 'maxing out' this early in the life of the hardware.

Having said that, it's good to at least see them take each platform seriously and push it to hard. Though, this is Ubisoft we're talking about...

thekhurg3776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

Disagree, developers can max out on day one. As development tools get better and they get more familiar they learn to optimize better but that still doesn't change the fact that they're using all available RAM and CPU cycles.

Christopher3776d ago

You can max out the hardware with poor programming, that's not something to tout as somehow being beneficial. But, even then, when they say they've 'maxed something out' it gives a feeling that they have done everything possible, and that's just not true. That's why they need to stop using that language, because they actually aren't maximizing everything, because there's always more they can do.

stuna13776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

Not disagreeing with you, but could that be considered maxing out the hardware if there are how should I say it... Spaces that are not filled? I've always viewed maxing out something as meaning even after rearranging objects in that space, absolutely nothing else can fit in that space.

@Christopher

Totally agree
Kind of reminds me of how my son seems to somehow keep maximizing his closet space everytime I tell him to clean his room! Some way or another he finds more room to throw his things lol.

TheCommentator3776d ago

Well, that kind of makes a statement like the devs mention here a moot point. Every dev maxes out the hardware. Every time. Here's the problem though: if I'm supposed to be carrying groceries upstairs, why would I have rocks in the bags with them?

Efficiency is what matters, not how strong you are. We are nowhere near maxed out from an efficiency point of view because we are still seeing games using outdated rendering techniques instead of catering to the strengths of the hardware in the consoles. Some games like Quantum Break and Uncharted 4 are using the systems way better than others.

thekhurg3776d ago (Edited 3776d ago )

I don't think every developer maxes out hardware. There are lots of games that are just made to exist and don't utilize all of the overhead available.

But I do agree that it is a moot statement to make. But it's just a way to say that they think they've done a great job with their game.

TheCommentator3776d ago

Yeah, I suppose you're right about that. I overstated things a bit, but devs can turn on things like better AA or add effects to come closer to max if they have lots of overhead though. As a general rule, I would imagine that devs don't generally leave a lot of overhead on the table though.

@thekhurg http://attackofthefanboy.co...

I don't have time to find the exact source but I think Naughty Dog said at least part of the above.

KilluaX33776d ago

That was the case with PS3 because it was hard to develop at the beginning, but it's not the case anymore with PS4.

Goldby3776d ago

while i agree that the ps3 was more difficult to develop for, devs are having to learn for a new system, that isnt what they are used to (last gen), so its a learning curve still for them, easier yes, but still a learning curve
