DOOM Turns 22

Bethesda:
It was easily one of the boldest and most badass moments of the Nineties. On December 10, 1993, the original DOOM was born... and since then videogames have never been the same. While id Software’s seminal shooter wasn’t the first FPS to hit the market – id’s own Wolfenstein is widely credited with launching the first-person-shooter genre – just about everyone agrees that DOOM popularized what continues to be one of the most-played genres today.

Fast-forward to today and DOOM has come of age. Now 22 years old, the series is not only a landmark in the history of games but is about to return with an all-new release in spring 2016 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. To celebrate #DOOMsday, we asked the team at id what it means to uphold such a proud legacy.

If this is how far tech has evolved in 20 years, just think what another 20 will do for the industry...

Bebedora3823d ago (Edited 3823d ago )

I do not think those computers will be for the public....

TheCommentator3823d ago

Truthfully, in 20 years we may have commercially available quantum computers like the Google and NASA just built, which are currently the size of a refridgerator and 100 million times more powerful than a desktop.

Bebedora3823d ago

hopefully there will be some middle ware in between made up of rubber and glue...

But as you stated...if we will make a leap from today to the future in computer tech, it will be huge.
If so, then the computer will be too powerful to not threaten the rest of the world. The VLC tech is very good glimpse into what can be done.

Bebedora3823d ago

I can see it happen. Feels more like better AI and graphics by the demo I've seen. Still true to the nature of DOOM.

When I first saw Doom on a friend's PC, it blew me away. I built my first PC just so I could play it!

TheCommentator3823d ago

I played it on practically everything, PC, SNES, 32x, Jaguar, N64, Xbox... I love it every time!!!

nucky643823d ago

it was the first game I bought when ps1 first launched - I loved it.

Yui_Suzumiya3823d ago

Ha, me too. I had it on PC and like 4 different consoles at the same time back in the 90's!

Shuckylad3823d ago

One of, if not the most influential game ever.

Bebedora3823d ago

They made what we have now possible faster.
From there and on, here we are.

Trilithon3823d ago

Think of all that has happened since its initial release.. ID fell apart, Carmack tried to launch a space program and now Bethesda working on a Doom game. But why are they pouring resources in to level editors and multiplayer map creators instead of making their own solid selection of kick ass maps..

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_92385d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil384d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Gamingsince1981473d ago

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
