Are Gameplay Altering Microtransactions Ever Acceptable?

MWEB GameZone writes: "Adding gameplay altering microtransactions which introduces pay-to-win elements into a game is a horrible idea, especially if the game in question is buy-to-play.

Here is a look at the latest example of a developer that tries to milk their playerbase and breaking an important promise, showing the effect of adding pay-to-win microtransactions.

Agreed. And it's the one thing that Naughty Dog subscribe to that is unacceptable. In TLOU multiplayer, they have lots of abilities and guns that are only available for real cheddar.

I don't mind paying for aesthetic things if that's your bag, but you shouldn't make the game easier for those willing to cough up a few extra bucks.

No, never. It feels like we're milked more and more on release. Pre-orders and launch DLC have pretty much become the norm. They're following the razor blade model, and it sucks.

There is just no value for the gamer in changing gameplay with micro-transactions. I'm sure the devs will see better profits though.

Indeed, every year it gets worse and worse. But adding p2w to a game after people have bought it is just disgusting

I'm against microtransactions altogether. I always imagine reading a Tips and Tricks magazine with each cheat having a separate price tag.

Anyone remember the old cheat hotlines? Yeah... pay $20 in fees to find out how to beat so and so. In 1980's dollars. So the equivalent of a couple $60 games today.

Thats why I kept my nose in the newsstands because only suckers would waste that much money. Early Gamepro, Tips and Tricks and other magazines usually had what I want at the time and seeing they had codes for 100's of games for 6 bucks in my home country, I felt I got my money's worth.

The Rise of Payday and Its Fall

GB: "Of course, Payday 2 has had its fair share of ups and downs as well, in spite of the success that it has enjoyed. For starters, the disparity between the game’s PC and console versions is a major issue that plagued the game for years on end, thanks to the frustrating optimization issues across platforms brought about by the Diesel Engine, which the game was developed on."
