Oculus Rift Videogames Will Be Digital Only

VRFocus reports on the statement made by Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, stating that Oculus Rift videogames will not be available at retail.

I dont think this is a good decision. There are lots of people with slow internet (or no internet at all) and people like me who simply prefer having the retail disc. The more choices, the better. Hopefully with Morpheus Sony makes both digital and retail like they always do.

You obviously are not a PC gamer. Most PC games are digital only. You may find a Batman or Call of Duty retail PC game, but physical PC gmaes are rare. And no matter how great VR games are, VR is in its infancy, thus it'll have a niche size consumer base for awhile. Economically it makes zero sense to put games in retail stores, especially given that PC gaming market has already shifted to digital.

What a totally clueless statement. The only way to get physical games on the PC now a days is from pirates.

Pixelart3903d ago

It's for PC. 90% of sales are digital. It makes perfect sense.

I'm not at all sure why you're getting upvotes, but physical media isn't really a thing on PC anymore, if you didn't know. I guess it could be pretty weird to look at how PC's economy is so different from consoles from a console player's perspective. After the huge success of Steam and thanks to the fact that the PC gaming economy is open and unregulated like it is on console, physical media went the way of the dinosaur years ago. I don't even know where you would go to find any and I've been a PC gamer for 5 years. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for devs to spend extra money producing game discs, something next to no one buys anymore. Especially when many will probably be indie who're struggling to get enough money to make the game alone.

give it up will you. at least you admit it's about preferring physical games than who may not have access. at least you are honest enough to show it really isn't about those who may not have access and ALL about you preferring physical over digital. and speaking of sony, how many games do they have that are digital only? the answer is lots.

pc gaming is not only thriving but it's also doing it in a digital era.

That seriously makes no sense, when retail sales for console games still lead by a huge margin vs. digital.

Bladesfist3903d ago

Oculus are targeting the PC Market which is pretty much digital only nowadays.

Clover9043903d ago

Lol, how does this factual statement get disagrees?

Oculus Rift is a PC peripheral. It's not for Xbox, it's not for PlayStation... it's strictly for the PC. Console gamers may still prefer physical, but PC gamers went digital a long time ago.

aquaticDonut3903d ago

That's great. But, this isn't on consoles. This is a PC peripheral and, on PC, physical media is just shy of non-existant. I'm a PC gamer and I don't own a single PC game on disc, nor do I know anyone who does or where you would even find them. Going digital only on PC isn't going to make a noticeable difference in sales.

WeAreLegion3903d ago

It's on PC. That makes sense. I don't know anyone who buys physical copies of PC games.

I think having physical merchandise in the store helps sell hardware and software. They hopefully will have game cards at least.
