Will Microsoft's Holiday Strategy Work?

PoliGames talks about Microsoft's strategy for this holiday season. Will all these Xbox One bundles help sway hardcore gamers or will this strategy fall short?

It already has

It worked in 2013

It worked in 2014

It will working 2015

XBLSkull3895d ago

With that 1TB hybrid drive and an elite controller bundle I may be buying Xbox One #3 this fall.

NewMonday3895d ago

Its simply the cheap bundles mostly non-gamers who want to buy the cheapest present.

MS had CoD and AC bundles last year & they were the best sellers, this year PS4 has all the big 3rd party bundles with CoD, AC, Disney Infinity and Star Wars Battlfront.

other things are a factor because during 2015 PS4 has increased much more in popularity amongst several different segments of the market with exclusive games like Bloodborn Until Dawn, Planetside2, Rocket League, Rapture, Ethan carter & the record Breaking CoD BETA everybody playing this year was talking PlayStation almost exclusively and positively.

also CoD switching has made MLG players and YouTubers switch to PS4 as well when most never thought they would ever do.

so even if MS do another big holiday price cut the margin will not be big like last year. if Sony surprise and make their first price cut matching X1 price it will be another PS4 win.

Big Market , so its still a win .

Not bigger than the whole world though.

how well levi jeans sells in japan impacts you if you buy levi jeans in the usa? not sure why global sales really matters to those who don't live in those regions.

what big games is microsoft missing out that both nintendo and sony are capitalizing on by not selling well in various parts of the world aside from some japanese games aimed at japanese gamers?

Spotie3894d ago

Your analogy is stupid, moldy.

Xbox does bad in Japan, Xbox gets few Japanese games. Fans of Japanese games go elsewhere to play said Japanese games.

Really simple. But maybe that makes no sense to you, either.

freshslicepizza3894d ago (Edited 3894d ago )

@Spotie
"Xbox does bad in Japan, Xbox gets few Japanese games. Fans of Japanese games go elsewhere to play said Japanese games.

Really simple. But maybe that makes no sense to you, either."

so simple yet you ignore what i actually said.

'what big games is microsoft missing out that both nintendo and sony are capitalizing on by not selling well in various parts of the world aside from some japanese games aimed at japanese gamers?'

so once again i ask what the big deal is regarding worldwide sales if people are not interested in games aimed at an entirely different demographic? judging by sales in north america on these ps4 games i'd say not very much.

the xbox one is still getting games like metal gear solid, unlike the wii u, and other major japanese published games. unless sony has exclusive deals in place (such as ffvii, shenmue 3 and street fighter 5).

so tell me again what games aimed at the north american market is being ignored on the xbox one due to lack of worldwide sales?

Spotie3894d ago

It's not "aimed at the North American market," you... very narrow-minded person.

It's "aimed at gamers." You make Japanese games, and then you want them to sell everywhere. You make a German game, and you want it to sell everywhere. You make a tiny little indie, and it could be the next Minecraft.

All that works best when you can get to as many markets as possible.

And none of it is cheap.

Who the hell is gonna spend money and resources developing for a console that won't reach as many as possible? Why would I, as a developer from anywhere else in the world, prefer to put my game where it's going to have a limited audience from the start?

Judging by sales? Sales of what? Which game? And which metric are you applying? Are you saying because these smaller games don't see the sales of GTA or Call of Duty that, "judging by sales," these smaller games didn't do well enough by their developers?

Your whole view on this is insanely myopic. Are you incapable of understanding that, with how global gaming has become, performance in EVERY market matters.

Please, enough with the ignorance. It's hard to even address you without insults at this point, and I'm already being marked for unfathomable reasons. If this nonsense is the best retort you can do... just keep it to yourself next time.

freshslicepizza3894d ago (Edited 3894d ago )

Spotie,
"Please, enough with the ignorance. It's hard to even address you without insults at this point, and I'm already being marked for unfathomable reasons. If this nonsense is the best retort you can do... just keep it to yourself next time."

we are not talking about serious issues here, we are talking about videogames so try and keep your emotions at bay. that $400 plastic box is not as important as you make it out to be.

the fact is those games you mention are niche games outside of japan. what you fail to understand time and again is the xbox one is not missing out on key titles like metal gear solid, devil may cry, tekken and so on. those used to be associated with the playstation brand. they are no longer. that is because much like nintendo made games they are aimed at the general public and consoles for the most part are mainstream products. which means most people don't care about worldwide sales unless it somehow impacts them. japan is no longer the powerhouse it once was as far as game support goes for consoles. event the people there don't seem to care much about console gaming.

Spotie3893d ago

How important do I make that plastic box out to be, moldy? Sounds like a cop-out to me.

Here's the bottom line: your reasoning is stupid. Literally EVERYONE core to the industry cares about how well these consoles and games do everywhere in the world. Microsoft isn't just shrugging off their poor sales in Asia; they wish those sales were better. Obviously, every developer and publisher wishes the same, because that means their games reach a larger audience. Consumers like you and me care- even if you say you don't- because those sales DO affect games we see on a given console.

You keep trying to narrow things down to "key" or "big" franchises, which is moronic as well. It doesn't matter how big the franchise is. After all, none of them started out that way. Name me ONE that was a multi-million unit seller before it got big... yeah, you can't, because that's not even possible.

Who cares if it's not Final Fantasy or DMC? Who gives a damn if it's mainstream or not?

Star Ocean bombed on Xbox, so did Tales; these aren't small franchises, even if not the size of FF. But you probably won't see them on Xbox again.

Your attitude is no different than the "PlayStation has no games because they don't have 4+ AAA exclusives launching this holiday" mentality that's overrun this site. Especially as the PC gamer you claim yourself to be, since when is it okay for gamers to disregard games based on their budget, or whether or not they're mainstream?

More importantly, did it ever occur to you- and it should have, given how frequently we PS fans say it- that Sony's success in gaming is PRECISELY because they'll support so many smaller budget, niche games? Did you stop to think that those things are exactly why the PS4 has doubled up on its nearest competitor in sales?

Or were you too busy looking for ways to defend Microsoft to even think about it?

And they got beaten year after year with no exception this year

uth113894d ago

Win the holiday months, lose the rest of the year and gave your competitor a 2:1 sales lead?

Yup works real well! /s

CKPan3894d ago

People are already smarter, look at the piss poor support to Xbox 360 in its last 3 years, compare to PS3's perfect ending with TLOU.
It worked somehow, there are always short sighted people out there, but overall, majority won't fall for it again.

I don't think Microsoft should rely on waiting till the end of the year to drop all their big bombs. Doing so has caused XB1 to drop behind PS3 sales in the same timeframe.

Thatguy-3103895d ago

That's the reason the PS4 has such a wide lead that isn't shrinking. They sell at a fast pace throughout the yr. Even with all the stuff Microsoft does it simply doesn't halt the PS4 from selling good. Xbox becomes competitive only in the last three months which isn't a good strategy in the long run.

miyamoto3894d ago

Those non AAA PlayStation exclusives distributed throughout the whole year has kept the 1 million plus units a month selling rate rolling.

gangsta_red3893d ago

"I don't think Microsoft should rely on waiting till the end of the year to drop all their big bombs"

Why not? The end of year just so happens to be the biggest time of year for consumers. In North America there's Thanksgiving which most companies and schools take off for 1 to 2 weeks, perfect time for kids, teens and adults to game. Wouldn't it be smart to have big incentive to buy your console on the shelves?

Then you have Christmas which is the biggest shopping time of year. Where even more vacation time is taken and more countries around the world celebrate. Why wouldn't MS want their heavy hitters on store shelves at this time?

How about have a all year strategy? I don't think having all eggs in 1 basket is such a great idea. This fall has some monster hitters coming out and I think some of MS titles might get lost. But their core fans know when they should be excited about their games.

Gazondaily3895d ago

"How about have a all year strategy?"

Like they have next year?

NewMonday3895d ago (Edited 3895d ago )

to late by then, a day late and a dollar short

also PS4 will still have more exclusives than XB1 in 2016 and they will be the bigger games this time with no Halo to go up against, Gears 4 nowhere near the level of Halo and Gears Judgment was a sales disappointment so the franchise is not an automatic sell.

Sony didn't even have an all year long strategy. The only reason they had two games at the start of this year was because they were both delayed.

So if they hadn't delayed both The Order and Bloodborne they would have came out during the holidays of last year.

I wonder where this myth of "all year long" started to come into play and why it only seems to be applied to MS?

_-EDMIX-_3893d ago

You sure? Because last I checked Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us, every God Of War main entry and you could look that up too bud as released in spring, no InFamous games has released in fall, Demon Souls came out early 2009, not fall, Bloodbore early 2015..NOT FALL!

"Sony didn't even have an all year long strategy" you sure about that?

Every main Uncharted game released in Fall... Uncharted 4 is coming in spring due to a delay.

What this means is Sony has several main IPs that have a history of releasing around a certain time during the year...they very much have a all year type deal set up.

Last Of Us came out in summer bud and that game did 7 million units. Sony has been pushing for avoiding JUST the fall for years and years now and its very much paying off, many other publishers are following suit and releasing titles during spring, summer etc.

Fall is no longer the only time for main IPs to release.

The last 4 Forza games have released in fall, both Horizon games released in fall, EVERY MAIN HALO GAME released in Fall, Every Fable game released in fall, every MAIN Gears of War game released in the fall and Gears 4 is following that tradition.

Though MS does have some titles they release during the year that are not in fall ie Crackdown, they always release their most coveted established IPs in the fall.

_-EDMIX-_3893d ago

Funny too with the " if they hadn't delayed both "

Halo MCC came out in fall....riddled with bugs and had sooo many MP issues.

Clearly the fall means a whole lot to MS as suppose to Sony to had been dead set on a fall release...even if it was broken with its networking a HUGE deal considering its Halo we are talking about.

demonddel3895d ago

Why shouldn't they being number 2 in sales isn't that bad

Fro_xoxo3895d ago

I guess we'll find out when results are in. It will definitely have a positive effect on the Xbox's image and sales. I'd be shocked if it didn't.

Xbox is dead. How are they making another console? Fake news lol

fr0sty86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

They might think taking a crack at the PC/console hybrid approach might work out for them... but with PS6 delayed until 2029 at least, there went the power advantage that paying all that extra money was supposed to afford them once PS6 does launch. Also, releasing a console right now is stupid with RAM prices as high as they are. Either we're gonna be forking out $1200-1500 for this thing, or it's going to get downgraded. It costs over $700 to put 64GB of RAM into a PC right now because all the AI datacenters are buying up ALL the RAM.

Maybe a select few gamers will be willing to fork out that much $ for a system that is more powerful than PS5 Pro, but most gamers are only just now feeling like PS5 is hitting its stride and still has a few years of life left in it before we need to move on to a new generation. Plus, by the time PS6 does launch, RAM prices will be stablizing, so PS6 will be able to put much more of its overall budget towards a more powerful GPU and CPU vs. having to spend such a large chunk of the budget just on RAM like the new Xbox will, assuming it does drop next year while still in the midst of this RAM crisis.

Reaper22_86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

People said the same thing about xbox 360 launching early but it turned out pretty good. Microsoft's R&D is much larger and more cash rich than Sony's. They have the money to do it. One of the reason Sony is waiting because they arent ready to spend billions more on hardware and the PS5 is still selling and that would definitely hurt their sales. Plus they just released Ps5 pro.
The series x isn't selling well so for Microsoft its a good time to get ready for next gen. The next console from xbox is gonna be for core gamers and no matter when sony launches it probably wont have many advances over Magnus if any at all. Im confident it will be on par or better than the next Playstation. Even the series x does features that ps5 or the pro still cant do. Sony shouldn't of released the PS5 pro. Imo its not needed and underwhelming. They could of used what they spent on that for the PS6

salis84486d ago (Edited 86d ago )

First, no one actually said that PS6 is delayed.

The rumor started with Tom Henderson saying he thought PlayStation might consider delaying the PS6 due to RAM prices. He specifically did not say that he heard that they were going to delay it or anything like that, it was 100% speculation, and he never implied otherwise.

That said, let them delay it, the PS5 Pro especially with FSR 4 coming in the next month or so, will be more than sufficient. There isn't going to be any publishers, including Microsoft, willing to skip PlayStation's user base, especially when publishers seem eager to put games on Switch 2 which is a significant step down even from the base PS5. So, the idea that having more power is really going to shift things in their favor is extremely hard to believe.

Microsoft can make as many consoles as they want, the issue is convincing people to buy them.

Both the PS5 and the Switch 2 sold double the amount of consoles in December that the SX sold in the entire year of 2025. And I doubt that a super expensive co-pilot box is going to help them, especially if you look at the lackluster sales AI equipped PC's have seen.

Eonjay86d ago

The next Xbox issaid to have 36 GB of memory so the price short from ram should not be as apocalyptic as a 64 GB kit. With the PS6 coming in with 30 GB, the RAM should not be what makes the Xbox cost so much more. Of course without Microsoft subsidizing the console the actual MSRPs may diverge wildly.

fr0sty86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

32GB of DDR5 still costs in the neighborhood of $250-300 for the super cheap stuff, $450 for the name brand. That's what entire consoles used to cost. That eats up a huge chunk of the budget that was supposed to be paying for the CPU and GPU, which means that the cost of this system will be driven farther north than previously anticipated, and it was already expected to be above $1k. Releasing a console in the middle of an industry-wide RAM shortage is stupid. Even GPU makers are scaling back production because of it, and focusing their remaining stock and production towards selling to datacenters. Some memory manufacturers have dropped consumer products entirely and now only make chips for datacenters. Nvidia is scaling back its consumer GPUs, no longer offering the super series of some GPUs, for instance.

For MS to pull the trigger now means releasing at a very risky price point against a PS5 that is simply on fire, even outselling the Switch 2 in many cases. It's coming at a time where the Xbox brand is at its weakest ever, and consumer confidence in the brand is at absolute rock bottom. Nobody wants to drop $1500 on an Xbox when they can play the same games on their PS5 Pro for half the price already, or even cheaper if using a base PS5. Only a select few enthusiasts will bother to fork out that kind of money... by the time this product reaches a price point where it can have mass-market appeal, the PS6 will be dropping... but by that time, RAM prices will be dropping, so PS6 will now be able to, assuming it does delay until 2029, invest more into upgrading its architecture over the previously released spec, invest in more RAM than the new Xbox will have, a better CPU & GPU, etc.

As for nobody saying PS6 will launch in 2029, nobody said it would come sooner either, not officially, at least. As of now all we have to go by are rumors based on internal information that could easily change at a moment's notice. Even the design of the chip itself could change as it has not yet entered into production. They could easily opt to include a few more CUs, more RAM, more CPU cores, etc. between now and when it does officially enter production. So, MS could drop a new Xbox now, but it wouldn't be wise, at all, for them to do so if they plan on even holding a candle agains the juggernaut that will be PS6. PS5 will most likely mop the floor with it due to its price point alone.

And that's assuming MS even gives the green light to start manufacturing the console to begin with. We'll see in the coming months if production even happens. Microsoft's shareholders damn sure aren't going to be willing to subsidize anything at all after they just dumped $100b into buying game publishers, expecting to see a ROI, and not seeing it anywhere near as fast as they'd hoped, which is why we're now playing Xbox games on PS5.

As for MS sitting on RAM, they are sitting on some, but Xbox is sitting on none. Microsoft knows good and well they will make far more money putting that RAM into datacenters than they ever would putting it into a console that is already at a huge disadvantage before it even launches, and has little hope of generating a lot of sales.

It'll end up being a Windows based machine that utilizes an Xbox ecosystem as well to play their game library on. But you'll end up being able to buy games from places like Steam as well more than likely.

Would make the most sense honestly. Best of both worlds.

Microsoft should just ditch Xbox and cash in on PC and PlayStation games, maybe even Switch 2. Apparently, they make a loss on hardware, so what's the point?
