I got mine to watch movies. If you have a HDTV why wouldnt you?

One can easily see how well HD-DVD add-ons have done to know the simple fact that gamers also watch movies. It is not one or the other for most people.

PS3 and the HD-DVD add on may be the reason these two formats survive.. Software sells have jumped for both formats since release.

If BLU-RAY fails that means Sony is stuck making BLU-RAY DISC for the PS3, could be very costly. Now I see why they are hoping for the PS4.

And PS3 will do the same for Blu-ray. When I first got my PS2, I started watching DVD's. Yes, I was playing the games, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the DVD aspect. Blu-ray is just so much better. And the launch titles are so much better. The extra cost really will be worth it. It really is quite amusing reading XBOXERS comments supporting the HD-DVD add on. Only a few of you are complaining about the price. It's just something you want, and it attaches to your XBOX 360, you really want it. Come on, you know you want it, it lets you play HD movies, just like a PS3. And when PS3 finally, kicks HD-DVD's butt. You can all rush out and buy the Blu-ray add on. Pity it won't play games though.

People buy games consoles for games. Not to have the next DVD format. It dose seem exiting at first but when you look at the situation for what it is Blue Ray actually cripples the PS3 more than anything else.

I have said this 1,000,000,000,000.00 times. Sony could have launched the PS3 with a DVD9 drive and crushed the 360 on brand loyalty alone. It would not have mattered one bit to Sony fans that the GPU is weaker than the 360's and the Cell processor is not made to run game code as well as it crunches data. A $600.00 PS3 with BR or a $300.00 PS3 with out it. To me it would not be to hard of a choice.

The bottom line now that it is out is if you want a PS3 go get one. If you do not spend the cash on Sony's PS3 we may not see much from it at all.

If you do not want one then D@mn I can see why.

Man, PS3 is still going to crush the 360 on brand loyalty alone. But why Blu-ray? Nearly all TV's support HD now. Now is the time to go HD. That's why Microsoft have gone to the trouble of producing and add-on in the first place. That's why they are selling. That's why Sony have Blu-ray in their PS3. Of course, Sony knew all this ages ago. Hey Ugly American, you bought 5 UMD's and then realized you had them in your DVD collection, DOH! And Thammer, go get an add-on. Ugly American go look up your last electronics catalogue, then talk.

DVD was a new format in 1997-`1998. No competition other than VHS, as mentioned. Adoption rates were already on the rise by 2000 (nearly all new PC's were equipped with DVD ROM by the end of 1999), PS2 was a cheap way to have a game system and DVD player in one. No doubt it was a smart move by Sony, but it certainly was not the reason DVD succeeded.

brought the intenet to the masses with the slow and crippled browser in the PS3. Few people used the internet before the PS3. We can once again thank Sony for showing the world another form of media.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
