When Will The Current Gen Consoles Be Defined?

Pixel Gate UK's Just A Thought ponders when the PS4 and Xbox One will define themselves:

''With the PS4 and Xbox One having spent a decent chunk of time on the market, I find myself asking a question. It’s the games that define a system, often the exclusives, and so far the new systems are debatable lacking in that department. The likes of Ryse, The order 1886, InFamous and Sunset Overdirve have been decent, yet they’re hardly classics.''

Sunset Overdrive was fun...in bursts at least. Long term I got kinda bored of doing the same thing over and over. Least it was mor creative than say Ryse or The Order (both fun mind)

Jalva4107d ago (Edited 4107d ago )

In about 2 or 3 years time, after that, arrogant fanboys will claim there's still more power to squeeze out of them for another 2 or 3 years until the next generation of consoles arrive, happens every time.

PixelGateUk4107d ago

I think there's always going to be that kind of fanboy in any media/walk of life to be fair.

I'm hoping one of the two systems manages to adopt JRPGs, i have a itch for new one, full of lovely visuals...though i'd be happy with a new Golden Sun on the Wii U ;)

DarkOcelet4107d ago

JRPGs are amazing. It seems right now, the one with the most is the PS brand.

Persona V will absolutely be amazing. Disgaea V will be great and offcourse there will be more Tales of series to come so its good to be a PS3/PS4 owner.

Rimeskeem4107d ago

For PS4-probably when Uncharted 4 comes out

For Xbox One-probably when Halo 5 comes out

sounds alot like a pc gamer, talking about his graphic's cards....

2016 is when games will showcase the potential of these consoles and what they are truly capable of. Most of these games will be showcased with first party and third party exclusives. First and third party developers have the funding and support to exploit each console's strengths and minimize the impact of their weaknesses.

Patience..

I'm hoping a new IP takes the cake.

crazychris41244107d ago

It will take a new IP. They need to blow us away with a great story, fun gameplay and memorable moments. Great graphics would be great but not needed.

New IPs helped make last gen great. There are more but just to give you an idea Xbox had Halo, PS2 has too many to count, 360 had Gears of War and Crackdown while PS3 had Uncharted and The Last of Us.

when im sitting in project morpheous with haptic gloves running on my treadmill yelling "death to hellgan!"... ... or something like that.

Godmars2904107d ago (Edited 4107d ago )

My bet is never.

Between the continued move towards DLC, microtransations, cloud distribution and the ever increasing costs and complexity of high end production, the hardware is just too hampered.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen4107d ago (Edited 4107d ago )

If the install base is high enough there won't be a need for microtransactions or dlc that isn't stand alone content. If a particular console has a 50 million user base a decent game will sell to at least 5% of that user base. Games like Wolfenstein have shown that a game can be well made with low production costs and still make a decent profit. The key is hiring small teams of skilled programmers and developers that can create enjoyable games with 10 to 20 hours of content without massive production costs.

Godmars2904107d ago

How well a game or console sells has nothing to do with anything. Dead Space 3 had two well selling titles before it, but that didn't stop EA from putting microtransactions into it.

Hell, the "success" of phone games has more to do with their saturation, their ease of access, but that's only made them more susceptible to microtransaction practices, not less.

I missed it when games use to have a multiplayer to them.
Hope Sony revives the game at one point

KyRo368d ago

Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, TLOU, Motorstorm. Great times. Its a shame how far they've fallen this generation

Muigi368d ago

Oh they still do…its just the whole game now 😂.

-Foxtrot368d ago

Why add multiplayer when the single player (despite enjoying it for what it was) had flaws?

You'd work out the issues with how you craft the single player then once you’ve perfected it do multiplayer after.

"Two sequels were planned for the franchise, The Order 1891 and The Order 1899. While the third game was never in development, Weerasuriya says he had planned where the story of the franchise was planned to go, if he had been able to develop the full trilogy."
...
Alas, we'll also might never get the PC version of 1886, which is currently residing in some dev's hard drive, nearly ready for a release if required.

Charal368d ago

It’s a shame we didn’t gave its chance to this franchise.
Game world was very interesting, and gameplay could have evolved to a major hit with sequels.
Not even speaking about graphics that were way ahead of their time.

Reaper22_368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

If "we" is sony, i agree. I liked the game but it was metacritic that contributed to it's death. It's a shame.

AshleeEmerson368d ago

No, we are "us," the gamers who rated it so low on Metacritic, hurting... Killing its sales. I agree it is a shame. I loved this game.

Charal368d ago

No it is not, it is us has a community which crucified this game, which is happening much too often.

CrimsonWing69368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

I think MP being co-op would’ve been awesome. Essentially, I always viewed this as Sony’s take on the Gears series.

However, it really failed to measure up to what I expected. I definitely saw the potential but there were some things that really bogged it down for me like the forced slow walking segments (which I know was to hide loading), the repetitive warehouse werewolf fights, not enough variety in enemies, oddly we fought more humans than Darkstalkers, and the stealth sections were infuriating.

One thing there’s no denying though, this damn game was a looker. Such a shame at the wasted potential.
