Oculus Rift Creator Estimates 'Winter 2015' Launch

VRFocus - There's one very big question facing the virtual reality (VR) community at the start of 2015; when is the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) coming out? In the final quarter of 2014 Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe has gone on record stating that the release is still 'months' away, providing a vague but promising clue for the community to speculate with. This week Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey has provided an even bigger hint that may significantly narrow down the release time frame, though it may still be a little further down the line than some had hoped.

WHAT?! it was summer 2015 now winter,. oh great, hey why not delay it till 2054, why not !

thats it im ordering a early rift, i was going to wait, but nah

I reckon they are stalling for time. Because there are enough tech demos, but not enough finished content.., be it gaming or whatever.

In this case, I think they will follow Sonys' lead, and launch after Project Morpheus.

Oculus VR has acquired Nimble VR, and 13th Lab as of December 2014. It's going to take time to expand both the Rift and the software to include the new technologies that these two companies bring to the table. I'm as anxious for the Rift as everyone else, but Oculus has to knock it out of the park day one if it wants the masses to accept it as a viable game changer.

If the consumer version supports eye tracking it'll be awesome, and worth the extra wait!

I got my Dk2 on eBay - im skipping the first consumer version and will jump on a later revision. You won't regret getting one early if you pull the trigger now, there's already a lot of material to play with.

Only problem will be if they change the standard/SDK for the consumer version's new tech and make the dk2 less relevant. Fingers crossed they play nicely together.

Won't matter to me because I'm instantly buying consumer version even though I have dk2's.

That is much later than I had anticipated. I have to wonder if the extra development times are for working on peripherals or 2nd camera trained on the player. Carmack isn't saying much either. I really hope they get VR right the first time around. This could be a huge game changer for the entertainment industry as a whole, not jus gaming applications.

I'm hoping that a lot of developers add support for the Myo, I think that would be the most beneficial peripheral to have with VR. Eye tracking would be great though, instead of an entire screen of clarity it could be like real life, focusing on what you look at.

Clover9044152d ago

Eye tracking is pretty neat, but obviously control input is much more crucial. Myo looks interesting, but it suffers from a couple of things... No hand tracking and the lack of haptic feedback. Everyone says that the first thing a new VR users does is to try and look at his or her hands. This can possibly be solved using Leap or something similar to Kinect. However, even with the ability to see a 3d representation or your hands in a virtual space, the next obstacle that can potentially break VR immersion is the lack of haptic feedback. Once you're able to see your hands you'll then naturally want to touch something. The walls, a table, a metal pipe your about to use against a zombie horde. This is a problem I 'm sure Oculus' plethora of engineers will be able to find a solution to.

BC_Master_Haze4152d ago (Edited 4152d ago )

Yes, and that need for touch is something that could be a fickle obstacle on the path to true immersion. I love speculating on how they could achieve that too, there's so many possibilities. I'm thinking gloves, covered in scale like tiles that can tighten and loosen to reassemble surfaces and objects. Add vibration into these scales or into a mesh within the glove and that could cover most types of feeling, however light touches like blades of grass would be much more difficult a problem to tackle.

That's what I expected. I imagine Morpheus will launch around the same time.

Charybdis4152d ago

Really looking forward to it, hope it will launch together with no man's sky.

WhiteGamerInc4152d ago

I can't wait for Morpheus. I am ready for some VR but I will definitely wait until after the first round comes out to see if the tech works the way it is being touted

Hopefully we'll see something new and an official release window at CES.
