Developers Confirm Work on Xbox One VR Kit

VRFocus - Earlier today VRFocus reported on rumours that Microsoft was planning to reveal its own virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for its Xbox One console at E3 2015 next June, potentially for release later on in the year. Now VRFocus has been informed that VR developers are indeed working with an Xbox One VR HMD already. The developer kit is currently 'circulating' a group of developers working on the console.

Expected. Microsoft doesn't want Sony to have a console monopoly of the VR market if it explodes.

Abash4162d ago

Project Morpheus and MS's version are just going to extend this gen the way that the PlayStation Move and Kinect did.

I'm all for it, personally. I dont want this gen to be only 4 years or so long

fermcr4162d ago

If the WiiU sales don't improve, Nintendo will probably launch a new console in 3-4 years.

MeliMel4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

Kinect and Move didnt extend a thing last gen except long development time.

Edit: One thing I will say for VR is that it seems to have a more focused development. Instead of them trying to implement it in non VR game just to say it has it. Like the 3d game fad.

darthv724162d ago

Well just like with Sony having been working on the move since before the PS3...MS had long been rumored to be working on VR/AR since before even the original xbox.

Lots of R&D goes into these things. it isnt like all of a sudden one company reacts to another. i can remember the demo of Surface initially was on a large table top touch display and Gates was demoing the ability to make a snowboard with all sorts of custom designs. That was like 8 years ago.

No doubt since the lawnmower man have companies been trying to get the concept down in not only price but also size and complexity.

It is very likely that both the Sony VR and MS VR will require their respected cameras. there has to be something to watch you and your movements to make the VR action respond accordingly to head/body tracking.

donthate4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

VR has been around for ages, and it is a geek dream. A lot of resources has been poured into this for many decades.

That said, I think this will release at the tail end of this generation, or maybe next.

I am always excited for new technology, but I think it will be like 3D i.e fad.

miyamoto4162d ago

Told you guys a long time ago that Oculus Rift purchase by Facebook has something to do with M$.

UltraNova4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

Darth,

I like your angle...not really.

Why? Lets take Google and their X division or whatever its called where they fiddle and experiment with everything new and radical of which 99.9% of those concepts just end up gathering dust in a warehouse or hard drive potentially forever. Say Apple releases a new trending feature when Google immediately announces that they are working on the same thing coincidently for many years as well (part of that X division's experiments) and releases a similar feature. What do you call that? long time running planning or reaction to something the competitor is having success with?

Lets be real for a moment, you and I are competitors catering to the same market, when I release something potentially successful that would sway that customer to my side you would be a fool not to copy or improve on my product and try getting that customer back! In this case its VR on consoles.

Yes MS reacted to Sony's continuous positively received move in console VR and NO its not a bad thing, if anything it will force Sony to up their game even more.

Edit:

@miyamoto

I've been saying that since we heard Facebook buying Oculus. MS does own 4% of Facebook. It wouldn't be unrealistic to expect some kind of Oculus VR tech on XB1's VR release if not direct co-development.

Gazondaily4162d ago

Well it might not be as reactionary a move it might look at first glance.

We've heard about their supposed ventures with VR/AR even prior to the X1 reveal with the Illumiroom demo and Forzaleza (sp?) and all.

FriedGoat4162d ago

I guess we'll see.
What ever happened with Illumiroom?

Gazondaily4162d ago

"What ever happened with Illumiroom?"

Dunno. It seemed more like an early concept/demo than a fully fledged product.

4162d ago
OpieWinston4162d ago

Illumiroom was confirmed to be too expensive for consumers... That's why they've put it on the back burner for now.

troylazlow4162d ago

Agree, MS has been toying around with VR for years, just not showcased anything.

here is an article dating back to 2012:

http://www.pcmag.com/articl...

Tctczach4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

The head of Rockstar saw it on his tour and loved it. He doesn't think gamers are ready for it though. .

DigitalRaptor4162d ago

What happened to Illumiroom?

It was not immersive and distracting to the overall experience, not to mention ridiculously expensive and not feasible for the layout of most modern homes.

Head-mounted VR is a much more focused and immersive technology.

SaveFerris4162d ago

I'd like to see Sony (and MS) allow their VR hardware to work with PC's. I think this would help with the adoption of VR.

frostypants4162d ago

It would be nice, but it won't happen.

Cueil4162d ago

My guess is that Microsoft's VR will work with PCs and wouldn't surprise me if they make it so that it works with current VR games made with Rift in mind.

Outthink_The_Room4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

I agree with Cueil.

Kinect works for both XB1 and PC. And if you need a camera to work with head-tracking, then it seems like a logical fit for both.

No reason to waste R&D money on building a second camera, just like it makes no sense waste R&D money to build a second HMD.

I think the only problem that occurs, is the HMD might be geared more towards the PC/Enthusiast crowd. It's price will be higher with better specs, instead of a cost efficient HMD for console gamers.

Unless MS figures out a way how to scale up without issues, I see the XB1 version being too pricey.

Sony doesn't really have that problem, since they aren't as obligated to support PC like MS is.

NuggetsOfGod4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

U think MS just started research yesterday?

Mr_cheese4162d ago

I like that Microsoft are going to be competiting with the VR gaming. Personally I feel it means that the technology will be pushed further and the competition will drive better experiences for us gamers.

I really want to VR to kick off so the more companies supporting it, the better.

UltraAtomic4162d ago

This is already sort of confirmed already. Phil him self already stated they where working on VR.

Drekken4162d ago

They should have named it Xbox Ustoo.

Gunstar754162d ago

Why? Because Sony were the first to consider VR for home consoles? Hahaha!!!

http://youtu.be/MFZCgNBxkcM

Not even sure this was the first!!!

FromTheAshes4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

@Gunstar75

@Drekken does have a point Microsoft is more reactive than proactive in introducing or hopping on the band wagon of many products/services.

Examples...

Apple iPod = Microsoft Zune

Apple iPad = Microsoft Surface

Google Search engine = Microsoft Bing

Google Chrome OS to stop Microsoft's OS monopoly = Low price Microsoft Windows 8.1 with Bing powered netbooks

Sony PlayStation 2 = Microsoft Xbox 1 (2001 response to PS2 using a Linux based OS that might've threatened Microsoft's Windows OS monopoly)

As of now...Their speculated venture in home console VR in REACTION to Sony's Morpheus.

DEEBO4162d ago

I'm all for it but don't take three years to bring it out.p.c already have tec kits so 2015 should be the year.

Is me or does next year gaming needs to come already.
I'm bored, Batman, metalgear,witcher3, Bloodborne, the order,Halo5, resident evil games, uncarted, tombraider, the division, mortal kombat, street fighter, Tekken7 and many more games.

The wait sucks

ScorpiusX4162d ago

SWEET
Am ready to buy , bring it on MS.

christocolus4162d ago (Edited 4162d ago )

Could Rare be working on a VR game? Very possible and I'm certain at some point MS will release minecraft (VR edition). Could even come bundled with the headset.

@septic

Phil sort of confirmed that already. We know one of their projects is going to be a traditional Rare game but what if they have another awesome VR project in the works. Viva pinata (VR edition)..lol.

Gazondaily4162d ago

Ugh I hope not. Just give me some traditional Rare stuff unless the VR stuff is MIND BLOWING.

Outthink_The_Room4162d ago

Viva Pinata with the graphics of those Pikmin Wii U bullshots.

Man, those screens were glorious.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn215d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn214d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown15d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay14d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac14d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger15d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde15d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_14d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
