Black: Reviving A Classic

Lets reflect on one of the best First Person Shooters of its time for the PlayStation 2 and the first Xbox consoles. Black is an FPS from Criterion Games and EA that released in February 2006 and was one of the most realistic shooters up to date. Black incorporated amazing graphics with intense weapon play and sound effects on the older generation consoles.

Agreed this was a great game at that time also the game Bodycount is supposed to be a spiritual succesor to Black which was a let down for me.

iRobotGaming4245d ago

Yes, Body Count was also a disappointment for me. I taught Black was much better.

morganfell4245d ago

I remember when Black was first shown. It was referred to as "Gun Porn".

Also the sound design was top notch.

Black, Mercenaries and Red Faction, all PS2 games that got destructive environments right. Why devs can't implement it right on modern consoles is beyond me...

Battlefield Bad Company did a good job with being able to take down entire buildings, then they pared it back for BF3...Red Faction did the same with Armeggedom, and it ended up sinking the franchise.

Half the fun was in how much you wreck the place... Good times playing 4-player split screen Red Faction, and burrowing huge tunnels through the maps with Rocket launchers

bloop4245d ago

Man I wish they'd bring Red Faction back to its roots with a new outing on current hardware. Geomod technology was awesome. It's a shame they went away from what made the game so much fun. Black was a great game too. The guns just felt so good in it.

I used to play this on PS2 and pretend I was playing a "nextgen" game on my lcd hdtv.

TheFirstClassic4245d ago

It had great graphics for a ps2 game. Still looks alright today imo.

Killzoner994245d ago

This was a Playstation 2 classic. I really hope Sony brings it back. A PS4 version would be sick and I could only imagine how beautiful it would look in glorious 1080p. I almost feel guilty wanting this because Sony has been so generous lately. Sometimes I think we expect too much of them yet they deliver time and again lol.

iRobotGaming4245d ago

If we are lucky, maybe we'll get it on PS Now

Software_Lover4245d ago

Still have this game on the shelf for the original Xbox. Would you believe I have never popped it in? Been on the shelf for years.

BattleAxe4245d ago

Well, there's no time like the present!

TheFirstClassic4245d ago

Still a solid shooter today. Don't expect a memorable story though... its sort of just a fun straightforward shooter with lots of explosions and awesome feeling guns.

mastershredder4245d ago

All those that put Black in such high regard (which is deserved), likely missed Cold Winter.

iRobotGaming4245d ago

Cold Winter was ok, But it wasnt has good as Black.

morganfell4245d ago

It didn't have it graphically but feature wise Cold Winter had far more to offer. A great tale made up of what at first seems disassociated stories. But as the game moves forward the threads begin to tie together with WWII.

Also the top notch voice work, crafting, ability to create cover, etc really helped round out the game.

Finally, Cold Winter had something for me only a few games have ever offered. Late in the game the main protagonist commits an action that angered me so much I refused to go to sleep until I had filled him full of lead. It was 3 in the morning when it happened and I just wanted to reach through the screen and beat that character to death. Understand it was actually really great storytelling that gave me that reaction. It was perfect and it kept me up for another 2 hours. After I killed him I reloaded the game just so I could kill him again. A much overlooked game.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

badz14978d ago

cue the apologist saying that these are mostly just contractors hired for this specific project bla bla bla

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee90d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

TheColbertinator124d ago

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
