Ryse’s Fantastic Graphics Compared With & Without its Advanced Visual Effects; Crytek Explains Tech

Crytek Senior Rendering Engineer Nicolas Schulz and Rendering Engineer Theodor Mader held a panel at the “Advances in Real-Time Rendering in Games” course at Siggraph titled “Rendering Techniques in Ryse: Son of Rome,” and explained part of the advanced tech used by the team to make the game’s impressive graphics possible on Xbox One.

Ok Crytek stop it now, yes it has awesome visuals but is time to focus on story and unique characters.

I'm seeing you too Guerrilla Killzone Shadow Fall gameplay and visuals are stunning, but the story sucks!! :/

Abriael4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

I don't think visuals and story are mutually exclusive. They just need better writers.

Godmars2904280d ago

No. They need writers and truly mutable game development. So that a game can be wrapped around a story, rather than a story wrapped around a game.

Looking at COD, the Order 1886 and Quantum Break I see the exact same thing in all of them: A Shooter mated poorly to a story that generally connects linear shooting arenas.

360ICE4280d ago

@Godmars

You see that in The Order and Quantum Break? They're not even out of yet. For what it's worth, I think they both look better than average.

DevilOgreFish4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

I don't see Quantum Break having a linear story. The game will have 3 different characters and will also feature a live action version of the story, as part of the game.

XBLSkull4280d ago

I've had fun with Crysis series, Far Cry series, and Ryse. I don't know why everyone bashes these guys so much, I have nothing to complain about.

Nice work on releasing the best looking console game though Crytek, almost a year later and nothing released yet has toppled that.

Stallion4280d ago

They need better game designers.

starchild4280d ago

@XBLSkull

The reason it has become popular among some gamers to hate on Crytek so much is due to a couple things, in my opinion.

First of all, a lot of console fanboys have always hated Crytek simply because Crytek's games on PC were the uncontested champions of game graphics and this caused a lot of jealousy. This was made all the worse when the Crysis games on consoles ended up as pale shadows of their PC counterparts.

Then you have a certain segment of PC fanboys that started hating Crytek when they started making console games. Oh, the betrayal, it burns!

Next you have a bunch of Sony fanboys that have a particular hatred for Crytek because not only are they jealous of the graphics of Crytek's PC games (and we all know that Sony consoles have to be the best at everything), but they're also mad that Crytek made an exclusive for the Xbox One, and a graphical showcase at that.

Finally, it seems maybe a few Xbox fanboys are starting to turn against Crytek for bringing Ryse to the PC.

All of these factors combined means that Crytek gets more hate than they really deserve. Their games aren't perfect, but they've generally been decent to quite good. And they've pushed graphics tech further than perhaps any other developer. They are generally a positive asset for gaming.

IVanSpinal4279d ago

@starchild or they games are boring

4Sh0w4279d ago (Edited 4279d ago )

Yeah whatever Ryse has a very well told story. I really enjoyed it and when people ignore how average many other next gen games story lines are while bashing Ryse I think they haven't really played it, I could be wrong but I smell alot of bias whenever Ryse is mentioned.

Mikefizzled4280d ago

They had story. It definitely could of been expanded on but the biggest issue was depth of gameplay and lack of variety.

kingduqc4280d ago

They make the engin that runs of dozen of games. It's interesting what they have to say because they are the leading team in game engine. Please stop commenting stupid shit like this because you opinion is really a whole league apart from interesting tech demo like this.

Malphite4280d ago

Do you seriously expect them to talk about storytelling on the SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques)?

dcj05244280d ago

I enjoyed Killzone's story very much good sir.

starchild4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

Ok, masterfox, stop it now. You and the rest of the fanboys need to stop acting like Crytek's games are bad games. It's almost become this modern gaming myth among some of you. It gets parroted around by people that I doubt have even played much of any of Crytek's games.

Are Crytek's games the most amazing games ever? No, but they are generally good games. I've enjoyed all of the Crysis games in terms of visuals and gameplay. Even the narratives aren't nearly as bad as some of you make them out to be. They could definitely improve in that area, but then again around 70% of developers are lacking in that area to me.

If the execution of the narratives were better all of the Crysis games would easily score 9s in my book. I find the dynamic gameplay a lot more fun than the vast majority of shooters and the visuals are obviously best in class.

Malphite4280d ago

I completely agree with you. This always happens with games that have extremely good graphics though. People start nitpicking on every single thing that isn't perfect and blow it out of proportion.

MaxwellBuddha4280d ago (Edited 4280d ago )

I don't care what anyone else says: Crysis 3 was fantastic (on PC anyway) and was a fitting end to Prophet's story. It also has one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard.

'Memories' in particular is quite beautiful in my opinion:

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

starchild4279d ago

I agree with both of you. People really are hyper critical of games that have great graphics. It happens with most games that have impressive visuals.

MaxwellBuddha, I really loved Crysis 3 as well. I don't get the hate. Even if it isn't someone's cup of tea, is it really a terrible game?

Why is everything so exaggerated in the gaming community? Games either are amazing, the best thing ever, or they suck and are horrible.

Volkama4279d ago

@maxwellbudha Crytek games get a lot of attention for their visuals, but very few people even acknowledge the audio. Which is a shame, because Crysis 2, Crysis 3, and Ryse have top class sound.

I played through the XB1 version and I really enjoyed it. It brought back memories of Streets of rage and Double Dragon at times.

I can't wait to get Ryse on my PC with ALL the Glory of the CryEngine3 turned up. It's gonna be Killer.

Oh and remember folks Ryse was suppose to be a Kinect Game before Crytek grew some balls and told Microsoft that Kinect is GARBAGE and the game would suck.

Ryse on the PC will do fine and hopefully Crytek has learned their lesson and will COME BACK HOME to the PC and leave the consoles ALONE.

Crysis Warhead 2 PC Exclusive sounds nice to me.

I had a feeling this scene was actually realtime. I noticed a little jittering in the animations.

didn't know about this one though. interesting.

Sashamaz1121d ago

I'm still waiting for the sequel.

HyperMoused1120d ago

Ryse was awesome, i have no idea why it wasnt recieved well and why we havnt seen another, Rome conquered so much, you could take the action anywhere, and it looked great when xbox one came out, now would be even better.

Ryse: Son of Rome Deserves a Second Shot

Ryse: Son of Rome was an Xbox One launch title that has been left to collect dust, but Crytek should set aside Crysis and give Ryse another shot.

It was a great game, it had issues but it can only go up from here.

crazyCoconuts1376d ago

It was just ok. Looked really good for an Xbox game though

Snookies121376d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows901376d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac1376d ago (Edited 1376d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty1375d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts1375d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage891375d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.
I remember it being nearly the only graphically decent game on the Xbone for like the first two years after launch, and graphics were that games strength

CrimsonWing691375d ago

I really enjoyed it. Bought it at launch even.

ManMarmalade1375d ago (Edited 1375d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer1376d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer78041376d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty18891376d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer1375d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv721376d ago (Edited 1376d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad1375d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv721375d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play1376d ago

Game was good enough, not great.
Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows901376d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.

MadLad1376d ago

It was a good game.
Only time I saw quick time events actually make me feel engaged.
