Is Atari’s E.T. really that bad?

"After the much discussed Atari E.T. landfill dig proved a long debated urban legend to be true, we found ourselves wondering one thing:

Was E.T. really that bad?

Our own Stephen Hilger and Brendon Bigley decided to play the game and record their experience in an attempt to determine what ultimately caused it to become one of the history’s most maligned games and set off a major industry meltdown in the ’80s."

They should have left it buried.

i hope they had priests on site to contain the hole to hell

They should have nuked the damn landfill.

Yes, it was. Even my younger siblings Big Bird Egg Catch and Pigs in Space were 100 times better. Time to put ET down and play some Haunted House.

is that a rhetorical question? because the answer is a resounding, "yes."

nooooo it want that bad.
i think Atari pacman was the worst game of all time

bleedsoe9mm4382d ago

pacman wasn't good compared to the arcade version but it was playable and could be understood , E.T was incomprehensible .

2600 Pacman was absolutely horrible. They didn't get a single thing right.

IMO 2600 pacman is the game that burst the videogame bubble, not E.T. The way I see it, the lack of sales of E.T. is the backlash that followed pacman

Look up pacman 4k on youtube to see what could have been

Seriously, did you play ET???

thorstein4382d ago (Edited 4382d ago )

I did, owned it and played it all the time.

The object was obvious if you had watched the movie. You have to put the pieces of the record player together and then "phone home." It was difficult because each time you played the pieces were in different areas than the previous game.

You also only had so much time on earth, just like the movie, ET gets sick.

Yes, you have to use your imagination to visualize what is on the screen. But if you kept moving those guys never catch you.

It wasn't a bad game. Custer's Revenge was a bad game. Pac Man for Atari 2600 was a glitchy mess. Superman 2600 was also terrible.

I was about 8 or 9 and I was given it as a present. That was one of my first high of getting a movie tie-in game and the lowest low when I actually started playing the game.

ET started the long ride of bad game movie tie-ins. Only handful of games in last 30+ years of gaming history had been good representation of their movie tie up.

As someone who grew up with Atari, I actually enjoyed the clunky 2600 version.

I love how there are matching ghost colors for the controllers. I hope they add a Purple "Sue" controller for the inevitable Ms PacMan double feature cart they are working on. It would seem a crime not to.

That shit looks amazing. If I ever had a "retro room" in my house, this would be 100% needed. The best Atari 2600 design I've ever seen imo, besides the original of course lol

Ristul187d ago

It looks cool, kind of ironic though considering that the port of Pacman for Atari 2600 is notoriously bad.
