Lest We Remember: Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys

Contrary to popular assumption, DRAMs used in most modern computers retain their contents for seconds to minutes after power is lost, even at operating temperatures and even if removed from a motherboard...

... We use cold reboots to mount attacks on popular disk encryption systems - BitLocker, FileVault, dm-crypt, and TrueCrypt - using no special devices or materials.

Hmm and here I thought a post about a method that allows any encryption that uses the main memory on a computer to be hacked easily would have been more interesting to people....

Fishy Fingers6543d ago

Probably a graphic comparison thread somewhere.

I actually found it very interesting, although I'm not really interested in putting my new found knowledge into action ;)

JoelR6543d ago

Lol ... thanks that made my day.
And yes.. it seems like a scary way to hack doesn't it.

The implications are this though:

1) any game that uses dynamic encryption and a moniter program to stop you free reading the encryption key (ie: WOW, Conan, (any games that use punk buster type systems))
2) any system which uses the TDM
3) any system that has realtime drive encryption

CAN BE BROKEN IF YOU HAVE PHYSICAL ACCESS... and that means all online games with clients and anything else that a consumer has digitally in their possession.

Pretty neat if you ask me.

This opens up a new can of worms, just image the possibilities.

Though the likelihood of this happening to any individual is obviously low, ever lower than winning the lottery lol.

Law enforcement could probably benefit from this if it's taken further.

For those wondering the name of the software stored on the external hard disk, it's bitUnlocker.

The talent level of some people just amazes me. Brillant.

JoelR6543d ago

I really wonder what led them to try and do this as a doctoral project... Did they lose power and then get back power and not lose their spot (pure luck)? or was it more of a question of how long the various types of ram allowing data to decay over time without power (pure science)?
The implications are staggering in potential.

Is it April fools day again?

The game is dead.

EDIT: the numbers are fudged. “digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data”

How’s concord 2, sorry I mean marathon doing? 🤣🤣

Neonridr15h ago

well it's not on Switch / Switch 2.. so their number would be zero.

The game had a decent launch however the userbase numbers are dwindling on Steam.

Does it hurt you to hear a SONY game was BEST selling ?
You gotta let go of those OBCURED feelings 🤷🏿

Neonridr15h ago

I mean the only reason MLB was the best selling title was because it was multi-platform. Likewise with Marathon. Will ring true for MS games. Only Nintendo titles are truly flexing their muscles when they chart as they are only to be found there.

S2Killinit4h ago

So that means we are going to act like it wasn’t best selling?

ChunkyMonk3h ago

It's kinda funny how this Obscure guy lives rent-free in your head. lol

Does Phil also live there?

I’m sorry did you wrote something smart ?
Or are you trying to to be funny because you failed at both
Now kid run to mommy legs the grown ups are talking.
Don’t bother writing anything I will not respond to a bratty child like you

Outside_ofthe_Box14h ago

Can't wait to see how this is spun negatively. 😜

-Foxtrot8h ago

Yeah sure, yet the player count is no where near what they want for a AAA game with so much money behind it

Why people are trying to spin this game like it’s done overly amazing is baffling to me.

It won’t even be a blip on peoples radars by the end of the year .

S2Killinit4h ago

I really doubt that. I see it getting more and more traction.

ChunkyMonk3h ago

You must me typically wrong cuz those Steam chart numbers (AKA where the game sold the MOST) is less than what Hunt has, and Hunt didn't cost $500 million to make lol

Soy5h ago

So........doing better than most expected, but not enough to make back what it cost.
