Facebook's Oculus Buyout - Developers React

VRFocus - The virtual reality (VR) community was rocked to its core this week with just 3 simple words; Facebook bought Oculus. Suddenly the indie company that could is part of a much larger organisation, with response to the news being mixed. While many have embraced the change, recognising that Facebook’s backing greatly reduces the monetary risks that the company was facing, outcry from fans has also been rife, citing issues with the company’s privacy policies among other aspects.

Im afraid we haven't seen anything yet from those big companies. Now that internet neutrality is gone only super wealthy companies will be able to pay for high speed access which is what VR worlds linked with the masses will require. Not even a month after the courts ruling verizion slowed down netflix by 27% and are told to make it rain. Soon psn and xbox live will cost even more. So all those kick starters will need some serious backing to use the web.

Wonder what Sony think to Facebook buying Oculus ? .

aliengmr4428d ago

Probably pretty glad. Most the pressure is now squarely back on the Rift to mainstream VR.

Thing is they both need each other to succeed. Its Co-op until there is an actual market to compete in.

nitrogav4428d ago

Yeah your probably right but I can't wait for an official statement from Sony .

And I couldn't figure out why my Facebook shares tanked recently... So Facebook is going to compete with THE SONLY PLAYSTATION on VR gaming? At least this may end ****erburg, who did nothing but steal the blueprints of a social networking site from a now Harvard graduate and "hammered the nails" (very sad from a developers prospective)

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2129d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
