Killzone 2 delayed because of management decision

Ron Eagle replied to someone on the playstation blog by saying:

on May 20, 2008 at 11:27 am

Just wanted to add a quick reply on the "delay" of Killzone 2 to Feb 2009. To be clear, there is nothing wrong or causing a delay to the development of the title. We (SECA) had to look at the fall calendar with SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, plus some PSN titles and make a decision where each game should come out. Killzone 2 was moved to Feb 2009 to make sure we didn't have three shooters in the marketplace competing for retail dollars during the same holiday season. The game will be great and it will be out in Feb 2009 in both Europe and North America.

Hope this helps - alot of times we gamers read delay and think something is wrong, in this case, it was a pure management decision.

perfectly acceptable. and very wise. gives us something great to look forward too in feb. polish it, coddle it, and make it great.

Fishy Fingers6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

The big cheese from GG said just the other day that he was thankful of the extra time, it allows them to "do the extra polishing".

I'm all for delays if they're beneficial, obviously you have to call it a day at some point but so many games released lately could of really done with the little extra time.

Release dates are mainly guess work to me anyhoo, you cant put an exact date on that volume of work.

LenHart6450d ago

KZ2 graphically has lived up to the hype and also in terms of intensity.

all Guerilla needs is to fix AI which wont be a problem

marinelife96450d ago

Darn you Sony! You want to make sure you get all of my kid's college money.

juuken6450d ago

Yeah, it sounds valid. When this came hits...well it's going to be HUGE.

solar6450d ago

personally i like quality products...especially if im paying $60 a game this gen. my example...Valve. yes some ps3 owners call them lazy but you know what? there constant release of quality titles to me...entitles them to release the game when they are damn well ready. make it great when its in my hands...not subpar pushed out the door crap to meet a deadline.

Lifendz6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

this game isn't just being judged on it's own merits. It's being judged against the problems of the first one, the budget, Sony's console and the promise of power, that CGI trailer, and that one quote by one mag that labeled the IP as a Halo Killer so long ago.

I'm fine with it coming out in Feb. Make it great and put it out. They have my 59.99 already.

PSN: Lifendz

solar6450d ago

great point Life. bubble coming your way.

Lifendz6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

I'll be honest. 360 was about to be released and I was all set to pick it up (I loved my Xbox and I'm a Halo fanboy) then someone called me and told me to look at the trailer for Killzone 2. I did and couldn't believe it. I looked at the launch game for 360 (Call of Duty something and Kami or something like that) and then KZ2 and my mind was made up.

I don't regret my decision. Everything being equal I'm glad I got the console I did. The fact that KZ2 is spot on to the CGI trailer (and maybe even better) vindicates my decision. It's rough not having Halo in my life but my new roommate has a 360 and he wants to play Uncharted and I'll finally get to play Halo 3.

Pick up KZ2 guys. It cost upwards of 40 million to make. Aren't you at least curious what that kind of money can do on a PS3? I know I am. If you remotely like first person shooters and are curious as to what the limit on your PS3 is then I can't recommend the game enough.

But I don't buy it. Why didn't Resistance 2 take a back seat? Or Motorstorm? There's already versions on the PS3. They should just keep their mouths shut and work on the game.

pwnsause6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

because those games already have their engine built, KZ2 is still WIP. plus this game is the FLAGSHIP game for the PS3, in other Words, this is one of the HUGEST reasons we brought a PS3. When everyone first saw that trailer in 05, people were in shock, and believed that this game will sell PS3s.

shazam6450d ago

resistance 2 didnt get delayed because its developed by insomniac wich is not owned by sony so they can release it whenever the hell they want.

kurochi6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

@2.1

I actually never heard of Killzone 2 when I bought my PS3 during launch.... I bought the PS3 for FF XIII, MGS, God of War III and R:FOM. I'm still waiting for FF XIII, but MGS is coming soon, YEAH!!!!! But I guess when KZ2 come out, I'll take a peek and see what's up. The more the merrier!!! Flame-on!!

Mr_Kuwabara6450d ago

Naa pwn I bought my PS3 for MGS4. =P

Don't really care that much about Killzone 2.

bym051d6450d ago

Exactly why it should be out for Christmas and not after Christmas.

donator6450d ago

Even if they could push back Resistance 2, I think it would be smarter to push back Kill Zone 2 because I think R2's multilayer would help sell more consoles during the holidays. Furthermore, because Resistance:FoM was a hit, it can ALMOST be certain that R2 will be a hit. They're playing it safe around the holidays, there is little room for error.

ar6450d ago

It's published by SCEA so they can very well decide when it should be released.

RacingX6450d ago

This has obviously been in development for a long time, if anything Resistance should take a seat till March for a little extra polish, KZ2 should be ready to go by now. Either its just not ready YET, or Sony doesn't want it to go up against Gears2. I want to believe its because they want to drop Resistance2 TO GO against Gears2 and drop a nice lil demo of KZ2 for a 1 - 2 combo to score '08 holiday $$, make gamers want/get a PS3 for the holidays knowing KZ2 is coming soon enough for them, and here's a taste.

crck6450d ago

Unless they have a contractual obligation to Insomniac that it needs to be released during a certain time frame. No one but the two parties involved know the specifics of their business arrangement so that could be part of the reason. I mean releasing a game in Feb may have a negative effect on sales and Insomniac probably gets paid per copy sold. Anyway I would think Ted Price wants a grudge match against Gears.

kewlkat0076450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

plenty of people bought their PS3's for Flagship games that have been proven.

Franchises like MGS, GTA, GT5, Final Fantasy Games, I mean I never heard of KZ 1 until I seen a trailer for Kill Zone 2. (and I'm being serious) I thought KZ 2 was the sequel to Kill Switch..

Painting that game as if "tis was the reason one bought a PS3" is Ludacris. I wonder how many even played KZ1? How much did that sell?

I myself do not buy it. Resistance can only improve, while this game was not anything great on the PS2. Al the sudden resistance gets the HOLIDAY SLOT.(The best fn Slot to sell games, while everyone is in that GIVING MOOD.)

You know that's when most buy a lot of Video Games right? That is the BEST SLOT to release games, think about it? for a second?

SO YEAH, NOT BUYING IT. after 4 1/2 still not ready or in pre alpha, sheesh.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt6450d ago

i bought my PS3 for the next Gen Fifa and Socom nothing else but what ever looks good ill be buying

ryuyasho6450d ago

only 2 reasons to buy a PS3, here they are:

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS and KILLZONE 2: CONSOLE PWNER--->hehehehe.

pwnsause6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

Im just saying though, just remember E3 2005 when the KZ2 Video came out when the PS3 was first announced that year. A lot is riding on this game in terms of promises, thats were im getting at, thats why it is the most important game for Sony's History with the Playstation.

i know this is not just the only flagship game for the PS3, people brought their PS3s for not just only one game, I brought my PS3 for many reasons, brand quaility, Brand Loyalty(I was a PS2 owner,so i wanted to make the transition next generation via the PS3, not to mention I am basically a Sony Fanboy in General, I love their Handycams, their HDTVs, their Sound systems, etc.) Not to mention the games, such as MGS,GOWIII,Rachet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, not to mention the new IPs such as Uncharted, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Etc.

I am just saying that this is the game that Sony Help produce with Guerilla Games that shows valid proof that it is possible to make a game look like its CGI counter Part on a Powerful console and I want them to succeed. its not everyday you see a game this rare that shows the console's muscles this early in its lifecycle, I cant wait to see 7 years down the road like how the PS2 matured in graphics.

Daver6450d ago

Thats too bad that it is Killzone that has been delayed, i would have loved to get it in 2008. This is the game that ive been waiting for with final fantasy. Anyway if they can improve it with the delay thats all good for me.

SUP3R6450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

Sounds like the game was definitely ready for release this year, but as most said Resistance 2 caused it to be pushed to '09.

Looking at its' release time, which is around the time of consumers christmas financial rebound, they know exactly what they're doing.
If next years February is anything like this years, it will definitely be the biggest game of the month. Although it would have been a big release whether or not it was released in Feb., that month is usually kinda dead.
I welcome their decision, it's smart.

wolfehound226450d ago (Edited 6450d ago )

I think a lot of people probably saw this coming. It doesn't make sense to have three shooters released all together. And I believe Resistance 2 and MS:Pacific Rift are probably bigger titles for the holidays. Since the previous versions sold so well and were great games also. And just like Burnout Paradise and Devil May Cry 4 last year it will give me something to play during the slow time of the year in Feb.

LenHart6450d ago

and so would Resistance 2 .
MGS4 is already making huge strides in sales.

Resistance 2 will be FPS GOTY 2008

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX450d ago (Edited 450d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne450d ago (Edited 450d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro450d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken450d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown450d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72450d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken450d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya449d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast450d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood450d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro679d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72679d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_679d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga679d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos679d ago (Edited 679d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23679d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000679d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin679d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole679d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix679d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989679d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor679d ago (Edited 679d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

679d ago
Michiel1989679d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor983d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar983d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg983d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149982d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138983d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim983d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC983d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138983d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle983d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76983d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger983d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca983d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy983d ago (Edited 983d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain983d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright983d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
