After initially being very letdown by this game, I am now enjoying it a lot.

Perhaps I adjusted my expectations, and now occasionally get pleasantly surprised.

Austacker4470d ago

I find the side missions to be more satisfying than the main plot.

They certainly feel more thiefy if you've played the previous games.

But overall, it's not that great a game. Not absolutely terrible, but not great either.

It's unlikely anyone will be playing this in a month's time unless they pick it up in a bargain bin somewhere.

It's not redefining the genre, it's actually a pretty forgettable experience.

<< already finished the game on Master difficulty.

I think the game is getting slated far more than it should. And i have two reasons why. 1 its a reboot of a classic which people didn't like the idea of so they will focus more on the bad points than the good, and lets face it the stealth genre in gaming is like marmite, love it or hate it.

having said that i think the game does well in areas such as core stealth mechanics, graphics and gameplay. But falters on things like frame rate and depth. Just my opinion some may love it some may hate it

starchild4470d ago

Yeah, much of the hate this game is getting is unjustified. I'm really having a lot of fun with the game.

I think the hate comes from three things:

1. It's a pure stealth game. No matter how much people want to act all hardcore and like they know what stealth is about I could tell in some of the reviews that the reviewer simply doesn't understand or enjoy what true stealth games are about. They wanted more of an action game or an action/stealth hybrid à la Dishonored or Assassin's Creed.

2. Thief was always going to get hate simply because it is a reboot of a beloved franchise. It happens to all reboots to some degree or another. Devil May Cry, Castlevania and Deus Ex all experienced this to some degree. There are some people who feel so entitled that they think a reboot should do exactly what THEY think it should and any deviation from that is taken personally and the game is brutally attacked for it. No matter how good Thief ended up it was never going to be good enough for some people.

3. The game apparently doesn't run very smoothly on the PS4 and XB1. When a game runs poorly it hurts a person's perception of the game in general. I also think some of the hate is coming from Sony fans who are upset that Digital Foundry said the XB1 version is slightly better and so they turn some of that anger towards the game.

It's sad because Thief really is a very fun game. It runs perfectly smooth on my PC and I honestly think it is the best stealth game in a long time.

MRMagoo1234470d ago

There is always some tard that has to try to pretend the hate about anything is Sony fanboy related. If it wasnt on the PS4 at all or was better than the PC version the game would still be a let down.

"3. " lmfao you really try hard but its so so sad. I have it on PC and the frame rate is fine, the game however is not very good imo, and by the looks of it reviewers feel the same way. People that played the original are probably the ones that are hating it the most not the "Sony fans" as you would like to pretend it is, the game leaves a lot to be desired.

starchild4470d ago

My main three points had nothing to do with Sony fans. I merely pointed that out as an aside, and I do think it is a contributing factor for the hate. One of the more minor factors, but a factor nonetheless. I saw many Sony fans immediately start bashing the game as soon as Digital Foundry did their comparison. I've seen this behavior before, so it's not like there isn't any precedent.

I am one of those people you are talking about that played and loved the first game and I happen to really like the new Thief. I've seen quite a few reviews from journalists that were fans of the original game that also rated the new game highly.

You believe that reviewers feel the same as you, but that simply isn't true. SOME reviewers agree with you, but some don't. Many comments on N4G, user reviews on sites like metacritic and amazon, and dozen of professional reviews all show that you are wrong. Many people like this game quite a lot. If you don't, that's fine, but don't go pretending that your opinion is some universally agreed upon fact.

Austacker4470d ago

"1. It's a pure stealth game."

The last couple missions deviate from this premise completely. Action escape sequences and boss fights do not a true stealth game make and the ending was about as 'non thief' as it gets.

"2. Thief was always going to get hate simply because it is a reboot of a beloved franchise."

It's getting hate because it takes the artistic licence of the original, stomps on it without any respect and tries to rope in the ADHD inspired playerbase of today.

"3. The game apparently doesn't run very smoothly on the PS4 and XB1."

That I can overlook as it's not meant to be played at breakneck speed. What brings it down is the atmosphere (or lack there of) ruined by technical flaws. Sound plays a huge role in this game and it's implementation is appallingly bad in this release.

If you think Thief is the 'best stealth game' in a long time, then you are correct because there hasn't been a lot of them in quite a while.

But that doesn't mean it's a good experience or faithful to the franchise licence.

It's thief meets dishonoured meets bioshock meets every bad cliche plot released in the last 10 years.

It's clearly showing the rocky backstory of development in the studio, trying to appeal to every taste and properly adhering to almost none.

I've already finished this game on master level with about 12 hours invested.

The game has it's moments and glimpses of what made the franchise following as strong as it has been, but does far too much in contradiction to those positives to undermine the experience it's trying to achieve.

That's why this game is very average on scoring and not down in the 2s and 3s out of 10.

It's decent, but it's by no means a great game on almost any level. Technically, graphically, artistically or creatively.

It's just an average take on a popular franchise that's entirely forgettable and likely to be cast aside in the next month by most players.

That's the sad truth of it.

curtis924470d ago

Let's be honest... for MANY people this game was going to be a letdown regardless of what the final game was. I'm 12 hours in and it's been a joy playing it.

Dynasty20214470d ago

They made it catering for console hardware and the console crowd.

Therefore we get a game that requires no thinking, and has a lot of hand-holding and is very streamlined, or guided.

The "freedom" is hardly there.

Typical console rubbish.

Tempest3174470d ago

Turn off all aspects of the hud and go custom difficulty...then complain about "hand holding and guiding". It allows you to tailor the game to how you want to play...if your hands were held and you didn't think its because that was your choice. Don't blame the game when its one of very few games that allow so many options for difficulty.

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno1037d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

isarai1037d ago

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin1036d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter1037d ago (Edited 1037d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno1037d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

monkey6021037d ago

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave1037d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Rutaprkl1037d ago

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
