Is Device 6 2013's Journey?

This editorial at Grab It Magazine argues that Simogo's iOS masterpiece Device 6 is starting to get the awards recognition to mimic what ThatGameCompany's Journey did in 2012 and pick some top gongs off the biggest console and PC games out there.

I really hope we see other devs and writers take up the same approach game style wise.

I couldn't agree more. Although we haven't seen a run of Journey-like games...

rhcpfan4429d ago

Yeah sadly, but I guess there's always a risk involved.

Part of the beauty offered in many ways by this indie revolution - more opportunity for games like this to shine. Now that the PSN and XBLA have embraced the indie scene more, I wonder if these risky games start appearing more often.

I loved Device 6 but feel it's overrated. To me, Simogo's Year Walk had more impact. Both are like 9+/10 games, yet Device 6 which mechanically stunning and definitely gripping, lacked the gut churning impact of Year Walk. Especially going through the Companion "mission" after beating the main story...it had the great cinematic immersion element for me.

I dunno, both are amazing, but when I hear people calling for Device 6 as 2013 game of the year I just start feeling like they hype has boiled over.

Yeah, Year Walk was definitely more of an experience. Device 6 is a more intelligent, ponderous work of art- more literary and cerebral- but as a "game"? I think Year Walk has it beat. Some terrifying moments in there, too.

Yeah, I agree, they both are admirable creations and works of art, but I also felt the puzzles were kind of more puzzle-ish in Dev 6, no doubt in response to complaints about the supposedly vague goals of Year Walk. Yet, I found that my initial feeling that YW's puzzles were a bit too murky melted away and I started to realize *I* was on the Year Walk. A sort of stunning achievement. Immersiveness to the extreme. I do love Dev 6 though and it's an easier recommendation to those who want more of a "here is a puzzle, figure it out to progress" style of gameplay.

What a studio though eh? From Beat Sneak, to these two, my fav IOS dev hands down.

I kind of feel like Device 6 was a better game than Journey? Definitely better as a puzzle game. I think I might have had too much hype for Journey, I was expecting something to properly rival Shadow of the Colossus.

MestreRothN4G4428d ago

I felt no hype at all and thought the game was amazing.

Am_Ryder4426d ago

That's probably why. I've had several games ruined for me, solely by me being too excited about them. Red Dead Redemption, Journey, Batman: AC... I was just too psyched, spent too much time thinking about them. And when they came out I was just so disappointed. All of my fantasies did not come true.

Other games, however, like Sniper Elite V2 and Just Cause 2 have become fast favourites because I expected shit.

Shaz from GL: "The way Journey evokes emotions through its narrative without using traditional storytelling methods is something no game has been able to replicate."
