I see this as a novelty. When I play games I want to sit down and relax, not stand up a move around. Neat idea but the technology won't be good enough until the user can forget they're playing a game because it's that realistic.
I think VR is like any other technology-- it needs the right games to take advantage of it. You're right, I wouldn't play Battlefield 4 on an Omni, but a slowly paced exploration game could be awesome.
Is the iPad perfect for every game? No, but the games that are built with touch in mind are very, very compelling. If VR is going to be successful, and I think it will be, developers have to play to the technology's strengths.
