Xbox One & PS4 architecture 'makes the development process easier'

In what continues to be an interesting dialogue between developers in the industry, the Xbox One and PS4 have been systems said to be easier and harder to develop for, it just depends who you asked.

Recently, Project Cars creative director Andy Tudor talked about how his team has experienced working on the PS4 and Xbox One, as well as why they decided to bring their game to next-generation systems, instead of current-gens.

Old
We've known going a pc route was easier and faster for months, Knack for example has been confirmed to have had a years less development time than would have been needed previously.

True that both consoles are easier to develop on than there predecessor

mewhy324521d ago

Well they're both more PC like than before. Going with x86 architecture makes life much simpler than before for devs.

DanielGearSolid4521d ago

Didn't the warframe Devs get their game ported in a few weeks?

I know its just a port but that has to count for something

cyguration4521d ago

Well, technically it took them three months to get it working 1:1. But it could have taken them a few weeks to actually port it. I'm not sure.

malokevi4521d ago

There appears to be someone out there who disagrees with that assertion. Therefore, we can now logically conclude that water is dry. The end.

MasterCornholio4521d ago

Unless its dehydrated.

WTF did I just say?

malokevi4521d ago

Or highly informed as to the chemical properties of supercritical water?!?!

Belking4521d ago

bbbbbbbbbut xb1 is hard to develop for....lol

GarrusVakarian4521d ago (Edited 4521d ago )

I have literally never seen anyone, dev or otherwise, say that the X1 is hard to develop for. Completely the opposite actually, both next gen consoles have the same architecture which is easier to use which is exactly what multiple devs has said numerous times. So im not sure who you are referring to with your comment......

@ below

Yeah, ive heard that too, but ive never heard "X1 is hard to develop for"....i guess it's just Belking trying to stir things up with imaginary quotes. So bitter.

WalterWJR4521d ago (Edited 4521d ago )

Some devs have reported some annoyance with esram, having to constantly flush the memory can take a fair bit of time.

If you search esram redgamingtech you will find some more information.

NeoTribe4521d ago

There have been multiple articles saying its not as easy as ps4. The esram is a hassle.

GarrusVakarian4521d ago

@NeoTribe

Again, ive heard that too. But not "hard" to develop for.

kizzle324521d ago

I think he was just being sarcastic...hence the bbbbbbbbbut and the lol at the end...

TheEnigma3134521d ago

Who has said that? I thinks you're making things up.

MasterCornholio4521d ago

Correction: Harder to develop for than the PS4.

Wikkid6664521d ago

Unless your Capcom and it takes 8 to 10 times longer.

NYC_Gamer4521d ago

Its not just Capcom but many Japanese developers aren't ready/used to the hardware yet

Kayant4521d ago

I think it is due to the fact they don't do that much PC development so for them it's a bigger change than it is for most other devs. I could be wrong however :p.

NegativeCreepWA4521d ago

I think people took that out context. While its easier to develop for it'll still take longer to make a game,as with any new generation.

cyguration4521d ago

No, that doesn't make sense.

This is the one generation where everything is coming in BEHIND the curve... everywhere.

Kayant is right, though. Anyone who has made a game for PC seems to be porting games over rather quickly for the new gen consoles. It usually takes them just under a matter of weeks to a few months to get a working port up and running on the new systems.

During the PS3/360 era it would sometimes be a gap of between eight months to a year before a game would jump ship. In the case of Crysis, several years.

I think the only people it's going to "take longer" for are those who have very little knowledge of what they're doing.

All the tools are exactly the same (i.e., if you've been using ZBrush for assets that's not going to change) the engines are still the same (i.e., Unreal and CryEngine were barely getting their engines oiled with the 360/PS3 so it's not like these engines got harder to use or are more restrictive, just the opposite really) and the architecture is now easier to code for.

I mean yeah, indie devs like Klei and Digital Extreme are showing that it's faster and cheaper than ever before to get games up and running on new-gen hardware. Any big pub saying the opposite is probably doing so to start convincing people that prices need to be raised (viz., Activision and a few other devs tried this last year to gauge the response from the community).

raWfodog4521d ago

They never said that development takes 8 to 10 times longer.

The 3rd one just pushed me away forever.

GamingExplained101257d ago

The third one was the best racing game in years. You can make it as realistic or arcade as you like, with tons of options to meet the performance points for each race. The graphics were great on PS5, running at 60 FPS 1440p on quality mode, it was certainly good enough. It was a lot like the Forza games, just more flexible in its sim and arcade options to cater the game to how you wanted to play, it's absolutely criminal how this game was trashed by losers who didn't get it and wanted to hate on it.

After the last installment I’d say most hardcore fans left. It’s just not that good anymore so I can’t really blame EA this time.

masterfox1297d ago

because it was always a project and it never got finished :D

ChubbyBlade1295d ago

Every game is a project. Your joke doesn’t make sense

InUrFoxHole1295d ago

It makes perfect sense. It's obviously a play on the title. Jesus christ you must be a blast at parties.

ApocalypseShadow1296d ago (Edited 1296d ago )

Ask Bullfrog or Black Box or Tiburon or Studio 33 or Criterion or any of the previously acquired developers who made racing games as competition, or as developers of EA games, then eventually dissolved into oblivion or reassigned. Just ask them. They'll tell you why.

ApocalypseShadow1295d ago

Oh. I forgot. Even Code Masters were absorbed into Criterion. Another racing developer EA took over.

Every racing developer either absorbed by EA or eventually destroyed by them. They either kill competition or have them in the end make Need 4 Speed for them.

MadLad1296d ago

EA only cancels projects for one reason.
They didn't see enough money in it.

Kombatologist1296d ago (Edited 1296d ago )

Not when it's because it didn't meet some crazy margin. It's like if something doesn't make EA a billion dollars on day one (I'm exaggerating that figure of course), they swiftly put it out to pasture.

SurgicalMenace1295d ago (Edited 1295d ago )

Much like if you're spending money on what's a bad investment for your desired goals, you'd do away with it, if you're wise. We should try to get away from thinking we know more about business than individuals that have been doing it for decades. Perhaps you could benefit from going into business instead of wasting all of your talents in comment sections. It's clear that you're the missing piece that EA's been looking for.

MadLad1295d ago

I've made a good amount of money betting on underdog investments over the years.

EA sets unrealistic expectations of their more niche developers, yet continue to fund absolute blunders like DICE and the Battlefield series year after year.

dumahim1296d ago

EA butted in and messed with the formula and act shocked when it doesn't work out.

If it's just going to be another sim-cade that doesn't do either one correctly then no thanks.

Project CARS 2 was a step in the right direction but the physics still aren't where they should have been, so what did they do for PC3? Go completely arcade. That killed the franchise.
