PS3 to ship without Linux?

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3), due this month, will not ship with Linux pre-installed, as suggested in March by CEO Ken Kuturagi. However, TerraSoft CEO Kai Staats says his company's Yellow Dog Linux is installable by "anybody who knows how to use a keyboard, mouse, and browser," according to an interview in the Coloradoan.

Both Kuturagi and Staats have said that when running Linux, the PS3 has limitless potential to serve as a home computer, as well as a gaming device, DVD player, and digital media server. Staats told the Coloradoan, "This is not an application-limited appliance. This is a full-blown computer. There is no issue of 'can it do this or that?' It can do everything."

So, obviously Linux is not required to play games on the PS3. If I don't install linux on one of the computers I have laying arround in my house; why would I install it on the PS3 in my living room? Unless ofcourse I can run most of My PC games on it. now can it?

Scythesean7105d ago

can it install windows? lol that would be funny..

DEIx15x87105d ago

That would offer more entertainment than Linux

Weapon X7105d ago

That would actually be pretty cool.

THWIP7105d ago

...sorry Sony, but without an OS, it's NOT a PC.

BIadestarX7105d ago

"This is a full-blown computer" How can this be true if it does not allow you to install every available OS?
Imagine you can install windows vista and play Halo2 or even better run Live Anywhere? So, if the PS3 is "This is a full-blown computer" and does not let me install any OS on it; what would my PC be? SUPER DUPPER FULL BLOWN COMPUTER? This does not add anything to gamers, let me run windows on it; so I can run games like Battle Field, etc... oh wait... no DirectX support.... most PC games are writen and therefore require DirectX to run. Ok, no thanks I will keep my NOT so full-blown computer.

videl7105d ago

lol, a computer is not what you think, it can be a computer although you cant install windows on it, it has nothing to do with the os.

Thugbot1877105d ago

In windows current build it will not run windows at all. Microsoft would have to make a custom build of windows that would support the cell processor inside the PS3 (Notice the standard version of windows and the 64bit version). Same goes with any other OS that would like to run on the PS3.

lalaland7105d ago

1. A lot of computers are sold without an OS -- I had to fork out an extra $200 for WinXP on mine.
2. The PS3 does ship with an OS -- just not your average Linux, Win or Mac OS.
3. You cannot install Mac OSX legally on a regular PC -- isn't your PC a proper computer then?
4. Although not as many as on PC, Macs do have loads of games and none of them runs using DirectX.

BIadestarX7105d ago (Edited 7105d ago )

videl, actually I am A+ certified and I sure know what a computer is. I'm also a programmer.
Thugbot187 it's more accurate about in his comment.
@lalaland - "1. A lot of computers are sold without an OS -- I had to fork out an extra $200 for WinXP on mine." Can you do the same with the PS3?
"You cannot install Mac OSX legally on a regular PC -- isn't your PC a proper computer then?" I have a MAC and I sure do run Windows XP Emulators and now with the MAC using Intel CPU you will be able to install Windows OS without a problem.
"Although not as many as on PC, Macs do have loads of games and none of them runs using DirectX." Yeah, you mean OpenGL? yeah OpenGL it's also available for Windows. That's why Windows is the prefered OS for games.
Bottom line, my phone can be considered a full-blown a computer in terms of hardware (I have a Windows Mobile Phone); now should I drop my PC and use my phone from now on? What makes windows what it is; it's not the stupid OS but the applications I can run on it. So, unless you planning to use your PS3 to run as a web server than it will always offer less than what your PC can do. Ohh wow I can run linux on my full-blown computer. Heck, at least my phone runs excel and the PS3 will not. It's this a bad things? Heck No, cause I will get it to play GAMES not to play some open source Pacman game; that some kid wrote.

Watapata7105d ago

Anything you do on Windows you can also do on Linux...it just might take you longer to figure out how, but it can be done. I use Linux exclusively and I can even stream music to my 360...

LIE # 4080.

LAWMAN7105d ago

So if no one ever claimed that the PS3 would be shipped with Linux preinstalled, then explain to me how that is a lie.

In fact, Sony has always said that it would only be available if we want it thereby giving us the option.

Good enough claim for me!

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga13h ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer19921h ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Outside_ofthe_Box15h ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

darthv7214h ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent756h ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

badz14913h ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7713h ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev: Big Studios Are 'Forced' to Hire Like Factories

Former Naughty Dog artist Gabriel Betancourt explains why the "sweet spot" for game teams is under 200 people and how AAA "factories" kill creativity.

Naughty Dog can’t be a factory.

Factories produce things

phongtro123_com6h ago

There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

DarXyde4h ago

More than that, it's logistically untenable. Inevitably, when teams get too large, how do you keep tabs on accountability? I suspect this massive team size is a consequence of the perfectionism streak Naughty Dog has.

I wish we could have so many people working on something and it turns out great because I'm all for collaboration in spirit - the problem is too many people as part of the larger team and smaller units. Suppose for example that you have too many people in the art department; you will very often come up against fiercely competing visions for how things should look. That competitive vision will cause friction between team members, team doesn't work as a unit, the back and forth can further delay parts that the other departments are waiting for, etc etc.

A 200-person team says, to me, that we need to scale back game development. Even if it means we go back to PS2 era costs and scale, why not? Those games are still great fun, the budgets were in check, and you could literally break the 200-man team into like 10 20-man teams working on different projects.
