Xbox One: cloud-based backwards compatibility would be “problematic,” says Penello

Xbox One isn’t backwards compatibility, but while the prospect of cloud-based Xbox 360 streaming is absolutely viable, Microsoft’s Albert Penello has explained why right now, it’s “problematic.”

So every thing that cloud-based on X1 will be crap?

XB1_PS44568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

He says that streaming entire games will be tough on an average internet connection for now. I wouldn't go as far as saying everything cloud based will be crap because of this.

BABYLEG4568d ago

Funny how crap is what pops in his head as the first thought

Eonjay4568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

What about a game like TitanFall that "can't be done without the cloud"? Is this an issue for Xbox 360?

I kid...

stuna14568d ago

But wouldn't this also squash Microsofts claims of the Cloud making the Xbox1 more powerful through the cloud!? Seems to me Microsoft are nothing more than "Snake Oil" peddlers! But of course I'm sure someone will pop up stating that this will not have any bearing on their claims.

If anything streaming a game would be less intensive than what Microsoft has claimed, as far as offloading major calculations to the cloud.

badz1494568d ago

of course it will be problematic for MS as they don't have the tech like Sony who bought Gaikai specifically for that purpose! unless they bite the dust and buy OnLive, there's no way in hell they can compete with Sony's Gaikai! - at least not this coming gen!

NoLongerHereCBA4568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

Stuna1 there is a difference between streaming full games with little compression over a connection compared to some data. For Sony it will also not be a < 100ms thing, which is what he is talking about.

Easy example. Lets say you are on your old pentium 166mhz and you want to calculate pi to I don't know how long. It takes a long time to calculate a lot of possibilities on your pentium 166mhz. But if you sent this calculation to the cloud, where all the machines do it's magic, you will get a much bigger number back, since more calculations were possible in a shorter amount of time.

mechlord4568d ago

@VaizardNL

You are wrong in your analogy because you forgot to factor a little variable: time-to-response
You see, its games we are talking about.

What MS is saying is they can offload computations to the cloud and use the onboard power to do other things...but imagine this:

If they can offload for example collision calculations, they need to get the response as fast as possible otherwise you would have glitches;

Since games are real-time, you need to process those numbers and return the result pretty fast which basically is the same issue with streaming games.

Yes, it can offload every calculation leaving the X1 to paint the most beautiful scenery...but can the calculations return in time for the next frame - always?

XB1_PS44568d ago

@mechlord
Obviously, the developers would have a choice in which calculations they want to offload. The calculations that would be seen on screen frame by frame, such as collision detection, would not be one of those offloaded to the cloud.

The type of calculations they would do, would be things that are underneath, such as AI. AI takes a significant amount of power. Offloading that process essentially alleviates that stress on the console, allowing for that to be used other places. Such as collision detection.

mechlord4568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

@XB1_PS4

My man

My point still stands...
Even AI needs to be calculated pretty fast and results returned ON-TIME otherwise hell will break loose. My question was and still is, can this be achieved on time always? because if not then there will be glitches, lags, stutters and all sorts of problems, much like streaming games.

If i show my position and then relocate, my enemy should take this into consideration...in the next frame, because i can be dancing all around him or using just two hiding spots.
He has to "think" accordingly.
So again,
"
Yes, it can offload every calculation leaving the X1 to paint the most beautiful scenery...but can the calculations return in time for the next frame - always?
"

NoLongerHereCBA4568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

@Mechlord, you are totally right about that. But my example was more to show that it isn't only MBs of data that needs to be streamed per second and that you don't necessarily need an expensive Internet Subscription to make it work.

It is indeed true that programmers need to use it in such a way that it can deal with some type of delay. Possibly computations that happen further away from the player. No idea if it is possible to alter this range depending on your Internet speed.

Thank you for a proper discussion/response :) I really miss those lately.

Last bubble :')

XB1_PS44568d ago

@mech

"My question was and still is, can this be achieved on time always? because if not then there will be glitches, lags, stutters and all sorts of problems, much like streaming games."

Yes, of course it can be achieved. Is it going to be achieved? I have no idea.

"but can the calculations return in time for the next frame - always?"

It doesn't need to be next frame to be effective. One frame is 33 ms for 30fps, and 16 ms for 60fps. The human reaction time is averaged at 200 or so. If the calculations get back within 3-4 frames, it's still effective.

I'm not sure what the back up is for when a connection gets lost. If it is fully dependent on the connection, then yeah, you may see stuttering. I can only hope that they have a backup code for that sort of thing.

UltimateMaster4568d ago

Ok, so the Halo 4 on smartphone, that ain't gonna happen, is that correct?

mewhy324568d ago

Problematic? Sony is incorporating this with ease. But then Sony also has a machine that's producing 1080p games with great framerates. Sony is also charging 100.00 less for their much more powerful machine. Sony is....well....I think you get the point.

UltimateMaster4568d ago

So far, I've yet to see something that I may like coming from the Xbox One Clouds.

Is there anything, please let me know.

Because the PS4 has Gaikai, which allows the playback of previous generation games.
They also has dedicated servers "or hybrid PvP / Dedicated Servers"
You can Remote Play your PS4 games on the Go, that you don't really need a server for.

It just seems as if the Xbox One cloud main function is media services and little to do with gaming. Unless I'm missing something, please let me know.

DOMination-4568d ago

I wouldn't say Sony are doing it with ease. They spent 350m on a company and we have no clue how well it will work for the average user when it eventually launches at some point in our lifetimes

The Cloud is turning into a Damp Fart! Maybe better luck Next-Next Gen!

You are showing an unhealthy interest in my pearls of wisdom! It's making me nervous!

Patrick4568d ago

Im sorry but that was actually funny. I got a good chuckle out of it. Thanks.
"Damp Fart" lol...

NikonSteve4568d ago

Its because they never had anything in development such as Gaikai. Sony will have the upper hand when it comes to streaming older games.

G20WLY4568d ago

Every new piece of info coming from MS about the cloud strengthens the feeling that they have over hyped it before they really knew what they can achieve with it - and, more importantly...when?

pyramidshead4568d ago

No Microsoft equivalent of Gaikai coming any time soon then

DeathOfTheFanBoy4568d ago

Gaikai isn't going to be International, and it's a contributing factor as to why I have decided not to purchase my PS4 at launch (UK)

What Penello is saying is simple and honest - Microsoft don't have the ability to govern the quality of internet connections internationally and or locally, game streaming requires a hell of alot of data through put, lag might feel non existent in some areas and in others it could be diabolical.

I like many others would love to see it made available as my 360 has served it's time and the disc drive is becoming finicky but imagine the backlash if it wasn't working 100% which it just can't in many areas.

Foxhound9224568d ago

"Microsoft don't have the ability to govern the quality of internet connections..."

Yet they tried to force gamers to uphold an internet connection to even use their console.

NoLongerHereCBA4568d ago (Edited 4568d ago )

@Foxhound922 there is a difference between having a connection and having a 150MBit connection. Think before you spout such nonsense please.

Don't want to be rude, sorry, but regarding this story it is about a fast internet connection that is able to stream a lot of data. The always on connection didn't require a fast connection at all.

Drekken4568d ago

"Gaikai isn't going to be International"

Some of you people are just try hards... but never try hard enoughs.

Gaikai had servers all over the world before Sony bought them. To think Sony isn't going to roll out Gaikai internationally is just dumb. $300mil spent, they are going to get their moneys worth. It is just rolling out in America first.

LeonhartX4568d ago

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio12d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn214d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn214d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown14d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay14d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac13d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger14d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300014d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde14d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_13d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
