SpeedTree Interview: Cloud Computing, Next Gen Consoles, Realistic Foliage and More

"We recently had a chance to speak to Interactive Data Visualization, Inc. (IDV) Director of Business Development Kevin Meredith. IDV is responsible for creating SpeedTree, a suite for generating virtual foliage and vegetation that has been used in big-name games and movies alike (seriously, Avatar and Iron Man 3 are no small achievements). Of course, SpeedTree will play an important part, especially when it comes to the next generation of game development. Just what can we expect?"

So cloud computing is on everyone's backburner.... So much for the "power of the cloud." Apparently it helps trees....

Either way good article about foliage. Didn't know a company existed solely for the realistic endeavors of plants.

Nvidia cloudlight demo. Exactly same stuff that MS advertise for XO. It does work as you can see, even at super high latency.

gaelic_laoch4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

Until this M$ cloud materializes into something more tangible its all just hot air!

H0RSE4635d ago

You mean like the 50% more powerful claims of the PS4?...

Hercules1894635d ago

Why dont these people get it, you DO NOT talk about cloud computing on the internet. It does not matter if you have a bazillion number of years of experience in engineering its all a lie.

MasterCornholio4635d ago

Well Mark already explained to us the benefits and the problems that cloud computing contains and frankly most of what Microsoft claims that the cloud and is capable of just isn't true. I remember Don Mattrick made the claim that without the cloud the Xbox One is only 3 times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and with the cloud its 10 times as powerful. What Cerny explains is that the cloud isnt capable of increasing the power of a system by a tremendous amount. It helps but it isn't enough to make any real difference.

P0werVR4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

The assumption is simple, what either Cerny or Matrick claims will most definitely be a bias, ignorant and unfortunately exaggerated.

But to go out the way without doing your on DD and seeing the potential of cloud computing which has already been proven exists, shows your argument is useless.

There is then no doubt that cloud computing has HUGE potentials, and Microsoft is more in a better position then Sony is with it's Data Centers and platform.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

^

So your telling me that does not have potential?

EDIT:

Also, given the fact that it is inevitable that consoles are changing the MMO experience (The Division and Destiny). Cloud Computing is going to be an integral part of those games, for the sake of gaming moving forward.

badkolo4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

yes becuase you work for microsft and know the real deal. powervr just gave you one example of the CLOUD in action, #dealwithit

Kayant4635d ago

@ P0werVR

Just wanted to point out that nvidia are using GPUs for their implementation of cloud computing which is very different from MS azure stack which is CPU based.

I do believe there is some potential to cloud computing however, that potential will not really be seen until everyone has access to fast fibre connections just like it's not a good idea yet to go all digital anytime soon because access will be limited. I think it would take about 10+ years before we the average consumer start to really benefit from the cloud for gaming and by that time we would probably just be renting games on a monthly sub like netflix.

Also as onlive as proved the running cost for these GPU stacks is huge so until it becomes cheaper for these companies to have massive arrays of GPU server stacks and we to have stable fast fibre connection we will not see any massive benefit as seen in that video IMO.

SniperControl4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

Let me tell you something, I am a Network engineer by trade, I have been in the industry for over 20 years, I am on call 24/7 365 days a year, I have consulted on projects in the US, the middle east, asia and most of Europe, I am telling you right here, right now, that what MS is proposing with the cloud is not possible.
This planet of ours does not have the infrastructure in place to handle that kind of information exchange. That infrastructure will not be in place for another 10 years at least, but to boast that the X1's power will triple due to cloud is a total misterpretation of the truth, blatent PR BS. All that is capable now is serverside computations for A.I or as Forza does matchmaking and driveatar calculations, thats pretty much it, bandwidth kills anything that requires instant serverside calculations.

I am an advocate for cloud, I can see an immense future for cloud computing, but please people dont get hung on cloud as the almighty.

MasterCornholio4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

@POwerVR

pfffffffft now thats just pathetic.

This isnt even a demo of the azure cloud network that Microsoft has its a demo from Nvidia. And the servers from Nvidia are composed of powerful GPUs so they can render graphics at a tremendous level. Microsofts azure cloud are just a bunch of CPUs stacked together and they dont contain the same graphic processing power as Nvidias cloud servers. Also what nullify your argument is the state of our network infrastructure there is no way that such a complicated and powerful cloud network can function through them.

Im sorry but its time that you pull your head out of the cloud and accept the fact,

Hardware>>>>>& amp; amp; amp; gt;>>>>>>&am p;am p;gt ; >>>>>>>&a mp;a mp;a mp;gt ;>>> Cloud computing

@badkolo

PowerVR gave me an example of Nvidias cloud computing solution not Microsofts.

Deal with it.

@Snipercontrol

"I am an advocate for cloud, I can see an immense future for cloud computing, but please people dont get hung on cloud as the almighty."

Some people believe that cloud computing will turn the XBOX One into an ultimate gaming console capable of rendering 3D graphics on the same level as Avatar the movie. But the truth is our network infrastructure is nowhere near the level to support something like this.

P0werVR4635d ago

Hate to break it to you guys but the government (FCC) is going hard on connection speed.

It is a requirement for the sake of new innovations and business along with high-speed rails.

http://www.fcc.gov/document...

Google has so far answered that call with Google Fiber. So if within two years, one major city in each state has 1gig speeds, it is then inevitable that within the coming years gigabit speeds will be a norm.

Cities alone are a big factor, since there are more people in cities then rural areas...of course.

These were talks years ago, and it seems as if Microsoft bet there money on this by risking it with their architecture. Along with Google.

Besides their PR claim, they've time and time again that Azure will be gradual as time goes on and developers use it more often the better it gets. It's in it's infancy, fellas so no need to make assumptions now. Games however...

SITH4635d ago

@Kayant what is GPU computing? GPU computing offers unprecedented application performance by offloading compute-intensive portions of the application to the GPU, while the remainder of the code still runs on the CPU. From a user's perspective, applications simply run significantly faster. Where do you think the GPUs are at for the computing? Instead of being server side, they are are user hardware side in your Xbox One.

Lets be clear on this supposed Cloud Computing concept that MS is currently not talking about anymore.

What they are claiming is cloud power(using the Forza information)sounds like nothing more than auto AI updating for every time you boot up the game.

Wait isn't that the same thing my basketball game did this generation when it updated my players stats based on his real world performance, so that if his shooting percentage went up so did the game version of the player.

Yeah Forza will use this information to enhance NPCars responses but that is still done via in-game algorithms. So cloud computing is basically a pretty word for auto updating???

So show me some real cloud power MS or put the concept back in Pandoras Box and leave it alone before you become cursed by its failure

MasterCornholio4635d ago

Microsofts cloud will most likely be used to store data on the internet. It will be able to backup your game saves, store AI data, profiles etc. But what it wont do is multiply the power of the console. This is something that only morons believe in.

KYU21304635d ago

Exactly. This is something that can be and is being done with the current consoles. We already have cloud saves, AI updating and profile updating via Cloud(off site servers).

Does it actually free up anything to boost system power? at the moment..No.

All it really does is give your network something else to download (even though its just a very small file).

Sony ran a successful cloud (Distributive) computing experiment on the PS3 called "Folding@home". This is likely where MS developed the basis for their current cloud powered model for the XB1. So the theory is there and so is the potential.

But the question is will be background operational, since it wasn't possible to run "Folding" in the background on the PS3 this generation. And not possible to run "Folding" at all on the 360.

Real Cloud power would require full background operation on the console. This in reality means less power for the forefront operations of the console. and could in-fact reduce multiplayer functionality.

solidboss074635d ago

A steaming 'Cloud' of piss to float above a crap console. It was funny at first, but now I am so fed up with this cloud nonsense.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
