Sony’s next Xbox-killing move: Developing a PS4 virtual reality headset

Though it seems like virtual reality is only now just within our grasp, this isn’t the case. Rigs like the Oculus Rift, more or less, have been around for quite a while. The Rift’s real achievement is not that it sort of looks like we’re “inside” the (probably broken in some way) demo, but that it’s cheap and not impossible to configure. It wasn’t uncommon for a fancy arcade — when arcades were still a thing — to have multiple VR rigs, complete with motion controllers so you weren’t stuck facing one direction (toward the keyboard and mouse) like you are with the Rift. Once upon a time, twenty years ago, even Sega was developing a VR headset for the Genesis. Nintendo, as you may know, created the Virtual Boy, which famously bombed so hard it’s now an expensive collector’s item. The Oculus Rift, though, was the first device that proved that the tech could work in a consumer setting, and be relatively simple and cheap. Now, perhaps due to all of the confidence gained from the PS4′s con...

Since i will go for the PS4, i will getting the one that provide the best quality price ratio for my PS4, either the oculus or the Sony headset

UltimateMaster4642d ago

Don't you think Sony's already dominating with the PS4 as it is.
Granted, new tech is always better for the gamers.
But the title "Xbox-killing" just fuels bad fanboyism.

KwietStorm_BLM4642d ago

Yea I don't know what that had to do with anything. Could have just said another plus for PS4. This is what I'm always talking about. Actual gamers killing the community from within.

Mounce4642d ago

I'm sure in 1-2-3 months we'll hear an announcement from Microsoft of them saying that they TOO are designing a VR helmet now.

walkincarpet4642d ago

not to mention MS's VR headset plans were leaked several months ago. I just grabbed the first article that popped up on google...I guess extreme tech isn't too thorough??

starchild4642d ago

You can be sure that once more gamers get their hands on the Oculus Rift and really see what VR is about it will build excitement and both MS and Sony will want to jump on the VR wagon.

Personally, I hope that the consoles would just make the Oculus Rift compatible. I will already own it for my PC and I don't want to have to buy proprietary VR headsets for each console.

Gamingcapacity4642d ago

I think that Sony have been messing around a round with virtual reality for a long time. If the tech can get cheap enough we might see it come to consoles

"If Sony’s VR endeavors don’t pan out, it’s entirely possible the company could simply facilitate Rift compatibility with the PS4"

This is exactly what Sony should do (whether or not they release a VR set of their own). I'd rather not have to buy separate VR sets for my PC and PS4. The Rift is looking great, and adding functionality for it is relatively easy for developers.

Like supporting keyboards or 3rd-party controllers (or TVs!), there's no good reason not to support a device like the Rift if Sony is serious about adopting the technology.

Maddens Raiders4642d ago

"Sony would greatly benefit from releasing its own VR headset that is specifically made to work with the PS4, as that gives the headset a massive install base right off the bat. Furthermore, Sony is adept at manufacturing and designing hardware — just compare the smaller, more powerful PS4 to the less powerful, much bigger Xbox One.

The company also has a history with fancy headsets, such as the HMZ-T2 personal viewer, which essentially makes you feel like you’re watching media on a large movie screen."
============================= =====================

Sony has a hell of a reputation for taking risks and gambles on new tech and formats if they really believe in it. From DVD, to BluRay to OLED handhelds. They seem to always be pushing forward and innovating on the back of their systems instead of just sitting their idly counting the cash. That makes me feel good as a money spending consumer, knowing that one is helping to fund some of these cool ideas.

I do hate when people post stories and then are the first one to post.

And the headline ? Troll bait much

Well the VR headset, no doubt, would cost a lot to buy (probably to much for your average user and only good for those who are really into VR) so no. Not at all.

edit: VR headset have to be decent for sub 100 before you get the average console user interested (i.e. a long way off that)

MysticStrummer4642d ago

Agreed.

An expensive peripheral isn't a killing move.

UnHoly_One4642d ago

Especially when it is one that completely invalidates your TV in the process.

I have no desire to spend hundreds on something that will also make it impossible to use my 2300 dollar TV.

Plus it would completely remove me from my surroundings, making me unable to interact with my girlfriend. It's bad enough sometimes trying not to "neglect" her when I'm also in game chat, and that's just a little speech coming through one ear.

I don't think it would fly if I was completely removed from reality and unable to see her. lol

I just don't get the whole thing, honestly. Maybe I would have 20 years ago, but now, it just seems like a waste.

MysticStrummer4642d ago

Yeah it would depend on each person's situation.

If you're with someone and don't have much alone time then VR goggles are less likely to fly in your home.

I wouldn't say the goggles make it impossible to use your TV though. Some games would be great with them and some wouldn't, and I don't think I'd use the goggles to watch movies...

...unless maybe it was PoV porn... lol

Sevir4642d ago

Again, this is likely to do anything but provide an option for the enthusiast among gamers...
It isn't a killer because it causes fragmentation, just like the Move and the Original Kinect. If this were a killer, It would have launched in the box and forced to have every game able to use it.

The MHZ that Sony released last year was $700 and tanked miserably... As someone who's only getting a ps4, this is hardly anything MS is worried about, in fact, I believe the better move would just be to right out buy the ocolus rift company and feed in there technologies into the Next Gen first parties instead of creating a machine to go head to head where only the first party will use. If the Ocolus Rift gains more traction it's better to acquire the talent behind them given 3rd parties are pledging support to it.

starchild4642d ago

I agree with a lot of what you said, but Oculus have said that they aren't open to getting acquired.

I think the console makers should simply allow the Rift to run on their consoles.

Gster4642d ago

But as the article says, they made a powerful console at a very affordable price. I don't see why they couldn't do the same for a V.R. headset. They'll have a good idea that O.R. are aiming at a very attractive retail price, so I reckon they'd try to make one that can compete. If O.R. are talking 300Euro, then a Sony brand for 350-400 would be conceivable i think.

christrules00414642d ago

Not to mention it makes some people get sick so that would be a waste of money if you buy it and can't even play it.

dcj05244642d ago

Your brain gets used to it.

Someone needs to get VR right, I don't care who it is. That's the holy grail of gaming immersion right there. If Sony lead the charge I hope the take the tech seriously and not relegate it to the sidelines.

Tony-A4642d ago

They seemed pretty interested in the Oculus Rift VR technology, so I most definitely see them testing the waters with the PS4. If it turns out to be practical enough, they might even build the PlayStation 5 around the whole tech.

Axonometri4642d ago

I am sorry but a VR headset is not going to kill Xbox. As cool as it may become, or as gimmicky it may turn out. It's not going to kill off an entire platform. Geesh.

clrlite4642d ago (Edited 4642d ago )

Though Sony is already in a position to dominate (imo) I pretty much agree with you. It wont be a VR headset specifically that ensures PS4 dominance, it will be games, hardware, fans, marketing, Sony's great development teams, etc. :]

Axonometri4642d ago

I agree Sony is doing an awesome job this launch. I was very irritated with MS this round, but I am keeping an open mind. There are reasons to like both.

The core of the platforms are going to sell the machines. If it was such a huge dominant device, why would Sony not put it in the box?

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot21d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose23d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE23d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername22d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy22d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde22d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8622d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8622d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle22d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
