IGN: Blockbuster's Blu-ray Boost

IGN writes, "DVD rental giant Blockbuster will begin filling their store shelves with Blu-ray discs starting this week."

"The company has announced that Blu-ray movies will now be available for rent and sale in all of its stores in the U.S. and Canada."

"After committing to the format in July, Blockbuster began offering Blu-ray in a limited number of stores. It was just a matter of time before the transition went company-wide."

"The next time you venture into one of their stores, you'll likely see a Blu-ray kiosk featuring a 42-inch high-definition TV with movies playing via a PS3."

"Blockbuster was the first national retailer to accurately recognize and react to consumers' preference for this format when we added Blu-ray discs to a large percentage of our stores last summer," said David Podeschi, Blockbuster Senior Vice President, Merchandising, Distribution and Logistics. "Now, with this national rollout, we believe Blockbuster is perfectly positioned to drive consumer adoption of this next generation DVD format and to become the customer's headquarters when it comes to renting or buying Blu-ray movies, whether in-store or online."

This isn't new.

Many, many blockbuster stores have had Blu-ray films for quite a while.

It's only just becoming more widespread, that's all...

My sources state that by mid 2009, around half of the space in blockbuster stores, or more, will be dedicated to Blu-rays.

Additionally, the new CEO of Blockbuster wants to incorporate a completely new look, not dissimilar to the how an Apple Store crossed with Radioshack would look and feel.

Blockbuster wants to head in a new and exciting direction, and I definitely support it.

The Blu-ray kiosks are equipped with 40" Sony Bravia LCD 1080p/24 HDTVs, and videos and demos are played via a 40GB PlayStation 3 encased in a bubble plexiglass case.

The sides and rear of the kiosks are used for advertising for Sony PS3 bundles and for the display of Blu-ray films.

I believe this is the model of TV that comes with the Blu-ray kiosks:

This article is from today concerning Blockbuster's focus this week. They will offer many more films, probably all available.

This will help adoption of Blu-ray and give marketing to the multimedia powerhouse Playstation 3. :)

With the new firmware update for 360's HDDVD player, I'm sure all the studies will switch back to HDDVD in a few weeks.

PS3 is going to do so great! I love my PS3!

The BlockBuster near my house has a PS3 kiosk right at the door so that the first thing you see when you walk in is a Blu-Ray movie running on a PS3 on a big screen Sony TV. It's a glorious sight to behold!

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
