How are Developers Using Xbox One's Kinect?

It knows who you are. It knows where you live.

MariaHelFutura4650d ago (Edited 4650d ago )

"it knows where you are, it knows where you live"

Creepy.

Anyway, developers are most likely using Kinect 2 like used Kinect 1.... To shoehorn gimmicks into games.

The worse thing about Kinect 2 though is no one knows what happens if it breaks, Microsoft isn't selling it and it s mandatory for the system to function. All MS has said is "we have nothing to share at this time". Pretty crazy.

I guess it is if you break any part of the system. If it is under warranty and breaks on its own then they will get a new one for you. If you break it accidentally or you are out of warranty then you will have to pay to get it fixed.

It isn't like buying another Wii U tablet controller as you only need one Kinect. It is more like if I broke the wireless part of my PS4.

Something that should/could be optional should not be treated like something mandatory (fans, disk drives, etc.). And them not giving a straight answer about it considering, is completely disrespectful.

@malokevi

Kinect could become optional w/ a patch, you fans and diskdrives can't be altered w/ a patch. Don't fool yourself. Kinect is mandatory by choice and it won't be optional because of advertisement more than gaming. Microsoft has made it very clear the Xbox One was made w/ advertisement in mind. In fact, it's one of the only things they've been clear about.

Minato-Namikaze4650d ago

Pretty retarded if the camera breaks then you cant use the system. What happens if it can be repeaired? do you have to buy an entire new system? I can smell this being RROD 2.0. Maybe kinect is the reason they are having production issues?

malokevi4650d ago

"Something that should/could be optional should not be treated like something mandatory. "

But it isn't optional. Its mandatory.

Its not a forced peripheral. Its an essential component.

It's time to come to terms with that.

come one, when you lose of break your car key do you change the whole car?
stop trying to make the problem smaller than it is. My EyeToy breaks, i change it to another one for no money, same goes to PSeye and the next PS4eye which seems pretty advanced and doesn't cost that much even compared to Kinect 1.

Maria has a point, the thing is mandatory and if sth happens to it you are screwed.
The use of Kinect is smells really fishy, i dont really understand why that thing has to be there.

There's an important point here. If the kinect stops working for ANY reason then you can't use your xbone. That's not a good thing no matter how you spin it. If it's under warranty (usually no more that 1 year) and micro$oft isn't selling it separately then you're down until you send the thing off for repair. Not acceptable. This thing should not be mandatory. NSA (prizm) anyone?

"Anyway, developers are most likely using Kinect 2 like used Kinect 1.... To shoehorn gimmicks into games."

no that would be the PS4 eye because it will get about as much support from sony and others like the PS3 eye and eyetoy did.

sony not including the camera in every pack is making it an afterthought like they did with the previous cameras. Meaning that if it isnt a standard item, devs will know not everyone has one and wont bother to really take advantage of it.

Ms making kinect part of the package ensures devs that everyone will have one and they will use it in some way to interact with their game. A cool example is how in Dead rising 3 you can lure zombies toward you by speaking: "over here" or "hey" and it gets their attention on the screen.

That may not be a huge benefit to the game but one that is still interesting.

Google/Apple map in your handphone knows where you live too. Yeah, it's creepy, FBI is gonna come to my house if I happened jerked off in front of Kinect.

Talk about gimmicks, Yes. the PS light+Eyetoy gimmicks are revolutionary right

hankmoody4650d ago

I'm not worried at all. When they had the red ring problem, MS took care of it. I'm confident that the Xbox One will have full tech and replacement support as well.

maniacmayhem4650d ago

How many times did the Kinect 1 break? Any data or stats you can pull out to confirm that this was an issue with the 360?

Or are we going to continue to play the "what if" game just to downplay what a neat little device this Kinect 2 is shaping out to be.

What if your one controller for the PS4 breaks?
What if your HDD for your PS4 gets corrupted and breaks?
What if the disk lens or Blu Ray drive breaks for the PS4?

You see we can play the what if doom game all day or we can actually see what devs could do to "shoehorn gimmicks" into a game and enhance the gameplay.

Simple as this people, Sony fan boys need to shut up ( even tho I like ps better)

Kinect no matter what you say will bring new things to the table and it does have its audience no matter how small or not.

I personally don't care for it one bit but there are those that do so just shut up real talk this fan boy ish gets annoying as ish

trafalger4650d ago (Edited 4650d ago )

it doesnt help that this is the same article we have seen at least 3 x now. but it is true, sony fanboys love to troll m$/xbox topics.

we will see a lot more interesting stuff come out on the xbone with kinect. its 10 x as powerful and now that every system has it they will take it more seriously.

xReDeMpTiOnx4650d ago

Yes they do troll Xbox articles... People even call me a troll even though I stand up for Xbox just because I don't like a feature lmao.

Xbox fans do the same to ps articles as well.

People need to just play good games for good games and not for a brand.

To keep a door open?
To keep piles of paper in place?

I jest.

I hope they use it to map my face onto all my multiplayer characters like you could in Rainbow 6 but better.

Or even better use it to earn me extra XP if my opponents Kinect detects them throwing their controller down when they get beaten. LOL

n4rc4650d ago

Haha at the last one.. How awesome would that be tho?

Screw privacy.. Record that rage out in HD and send it to me.. Lol

The Kinect has the potential of being one of the most gamechanging components in years. If devs utilize it, it will contribute in offering a truly next-gen experience.
