Let us commence arguments against backwards compatibility, because if a fanboys favorite console doesn't have it, then its not that important and its bad thing to have.

You know how important BC is? You've invested close to 3/4 of a decade on your respective Live/PSN account in d/l games and content, and then you're asked to throw them all away while you continue using your SAME account on the next box. Then if you're developer you have to choose making 2 versions of your game, for the "same" network, if you want to make money, with different architecture each time. So, in effect, the company that figures out how to allow me too keep my stuff, keeps me in the ecosystem. Picture Apple every time there's a new iPhone or iPad not allowing you to keep your apps. It's that important.

For me Backwards Compatibility was an important feature at the beginning of each generation due to the lack of games. When I got my PS2 first all I had was Super Bombad Racing. It was a terrible game and I stayed with my PS1 games for months after I got it.

I then got a PS3 at launch with Resistance 1. I played through it and had nothing to play for 2 or 3 months until ES: Oblivion and Folklore were released. At a European PS3 it had limited BC but I played FF XII for months with it.

I plan to get a PS4 at launch as well and the launch titles are far better than thelast 2 generations. Watch Dog's, Infamous, Killzone, AC4 and Diablo. I expect a few more at E3 but BC this time around won't be needed as such for me as least.

I kept my PS2 beside my PS3 just in case I wanted to play some older games again. I did at the start but after a while I stopped playing it and it gathered dust. This will happen to the PS3 as well I expect.

The PS4 won't have disc BC as it is not possible with the new design but Gaikai will be the secret weapon for that. But we will have to wait and see.

BC means that the games you currently have can still be relevant well into next generation. For example, when MS have their BC emulation for most of games from the original xbox, Halo 2 online play was still played by a large community for the longest. Think of the new age of DLCs and season pass. What if GTA5 releases two expansions like what they did a year and two after the release of GTA4? In a year or two later, isn't it better knowing these expansions can be played on Next Gen hardware that you currently own rather than pulling your old PS3 out of the basement or buying another used Xbox because you want to play these expansions?

That is why I think MS will continue to make the X360 compatible with the Next Xbox because they know how important it is to alot of current generation owners.

Dude, what are you talking about, here is the full list of xbox games that are BC with the X360. It is a few pages long from Jade Empire, KOTOR, Forza, Halo, NFL 25 and hundreds of others.

Vast majority don't care about BC. It's message board fodder.

Its surprising to me how the fanbase has been convinced they don't need this while its both easy to implement and opens up the library to old games while they wait for new games to arrive. If play station 3 and PS4 games are both authored on the same bluray discs then the PS4 should be BC no questions asked. If I bought a new computer with a new motherboard and new graphics card from a different manufacturer then all of my old games would still play. That is a given. Sony (and perhaps Microsoft) seem to be getting a free pass on this and it doesn't make much sense to me. Sony can talk technical jargon all day but in the end they want people to upgrade to a PS4 and not have the ability to play their old games. This way they can promote their Streaming service where you will be required to rebuy all their old games and waywardly kill off the used game market in the process.

Yes in ways it has spoiled us. Most gamers have come to expect it. If we never have had backwards compatibility in the first place it would be no issue. Personally I don't mind that the PS4 will not have it. Especially if it lowers the price of the console. On the other hand though I can see why it means so much to other gamers out there. This has been the only negative thing about the PS4 so far. Only time will tell how it all plays out. I only used it once on the PS3 for God of War 2. In my humble opinion new consoles should be celebrated with new games. But I as a gamer understand why people view this feature as a must have. Is the glass half full or half empty? Half full for me. People buy and play old games all the time. They buy them because they love them, or it brings back memories. Know what I am playing? Final Fantasy 7 on a PSX because I love the look of the game on the console it was created for. I also have Final Fantasy 2 and 3 on SNES, and play them still. I play them because it reminds me of being a kid and playing them for the first time. I had FF on my mobile phone and played 3/4th of it and stopped, why? (Sadly because I bought a new phone, created a new itunes and lost it). But that's besides the point!

It didn't have the same feel, and now i'm spoiled and trying to go back and play Final Fantasy for NES just feels sad because I'm spoiled to new technology.

The point I'm trying to make is just because something is 37 minutes old, doesn't man that it's a thing of the past. I watch trailers for my favorite games still, Fallout 3 which makes me want to play that game when the Inkblots comes on that trailer that changed fallout forever. "I don't want to set the world on fire, I just want to spark a flame in your heart."

We love these games and we always will, wanting something in new graphics on new consoles is only natural. Know what I plan on doing? Getting as many old titles on both download and console versions as possible because I love them. I want to buy games to have just to have in old format and play it in digital not to mess them up with scratches, or damage the booklets. These things have a special place in my heart and always will, the point is we are allowed to be spoiled in this day and age when it comes to video games. Why? Because it's our money, and our freedoms and it doesn't matter how and what we do, it's how we feel when we do them.

I think the only time it really sucks is early on. It's because there won't be a lot of games released just yet, and a lot of good games are still releasing for the last consoles. So you either trade in your console and miss out on those games, or you keep it hooked up and use old technology.

The only other time it sucks is when you find some old game you loved and have nothing to play it on lol

I plan on keeping my PS3, it doesn't feel as "dated" as the PS2 and still has its functions. Plus I have a huge backlog that I doubt will be done with by the time PS4 releases.

I think the hardest part about justifying BC is that it can increase the cost of the game console itself. Let's take the PS4 for example. The architecture of the system is so far removed from the PS3 that the only way to offer true backwards compatibility will be for Sony to include an actual PS3 inside the PS4 setup. You will need a Cell processor plus any other components needed to play the games properly. The PS4 setup is using x86 building blocks now so it would be much too complicated to try to emulate the PS3 games on it.

This in the end could drive the price of the system up another $50-100 easily, which is something many people would want to avoid.

Microsoft may have an easier time offering the BC, since the 360's architecture will be similar enough to emulate on the newer system.

Having the ability to play anything Wii related on my Wii U wasn't the reason I got it, but it is a very welcomed addition and a bonus that I can sell my older system to help pay for a new game or two on the newer one.

It's nice, but it really wouldn't bother me if the next-gen platforms didn't have it.

BC is essential!

Imagine not being able to watch any movie prior 2006 because it wasn't made for blu-ray originally.
Imagine not being able to listen any music on your MP3 player that was released in the CD/tape/Record days.
Imagine not being able to read the millions of clasic books on your Kindle pre-release....

If gaming wants to be taken seriously, it needs to take itself seriously. At the moment, many consider it junk food, throw-away trash. Play it, trade it, move on.

Well I like to have a games collection of classics. And I don't want to have a NES/SNES/Master System/Genesis,Saturn/N64/game cube, Playstation 1,2,3, xbox, 360, Dreamcast, Atari,etc... all connected under my TV in order to play the odd game.

M$ and Sony need to make all their games run on all future platforms.

I don't know. I may get killed here but I'm going to say it... I think Wii games look better on my Wii than on my WiiU. Some of the games on WiiU have funky aspect ratios and more jagged edges it seems. But then a few look better. I would have preferred more power over backwards compatibility.

I don't get the fuss with BC.
If you wanna play one of your old games crack out your old systems. I still have my PS1 & 2 both working just fine. I'll be doing the same with my PS3 once replaced by the PS4.

Progress has to come with some compromises.... so... I'm ok with it.

I don't think backwards compatibility was that big of an issue the previous generations because games were much simpler. When I say simpler I mean they were usually standalone single player experiences. Online gaming didn't really kick off until this generation and on top of that DLC, multiplayer, achievement systems, social gaming, and digital purchases have all become pretty much standard. Games and their experience are no longer confined to your living room and the contents of that disc. Did I care about backwards compatibility last generation? Not really. Do I care about backwards compatibility next generation? While not a game breaker it's definitely a HUGE plus and has much more of an impact this time around!

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.

I hated that he died. The game was good but you never want to see a character you can relate or enjoy to die off like that. We wanted more Joel not less. Still a really good game but that part will always sit poorly with many

Not gonna lie, I think they made a big mistake. I mean I like a big unimaginable shock moments as much as the next person. It was just too soon though. If you’re going to kill off the main character you need a solid back up that people love just as much to carry the weight of the loss. If you’re setting it up for a trilogy then he really should have died at the end of 2 or half way through 3.

Who cares, that was like 6 years ago.

I don't mind the story, I think it is interesting in its own. But I would much prefer it stays as a story between Joel and Ellie (And I don't hate Abby, but it just feels like a third wheel when I play the game, feel like it is not a story about her). Joel can live with the consequences in a different way than just get killed off, his emotional conflicts between him and Ellie, Abby and everyone else would have a lot of interesting stories to tell, not any less than just get killed off.

So we as players, who controlled Joel in the first game, can get immersed and feel the guilt with him, instead of getting angry that he got killed.

TLOU Part 2 was a great game, but the entire game made me mad

Personally I liked that they killed off Joel, his death scene was great. The story was good and how revenge drives a person. The last quarter of the game was dumb after Tommy told Ellie where Abby was located. She leaves the farm goes in an arduous trek killing many more people along the way. Finds Abby in a cage releases her they fight, Ellie gets two fingers bitten off, and suddenly she doesn’t want to fight and kill Abby anymore, lets her leave with a warning even though she was the one losing the fight. Why go the rough all of that hassle just to let the focus of your hatred just leave. Should have stwyed home with Diana and keep all her fingers intact. Still a great game with a good story and I liked Abby I saw no reason for all her hate.

They could have killed Tommy and made it a revenge story with Joel and Ellie going after Abbie.

ND was trying so hard to make me sympathize with Abbie and it just wasn't working. I just don't understand how you make a "revenge is bad story" while having me mow through hundreds of NPCs just to get to the main culprit and just...not finish the job. Druckman is a terrible story teller.
