Unreal Engine 4 Supports Full Dynamic Lighting, Epic Working On Dynamic GI Solution

DSOGaming writes: "Despite the fact that the latest UE4 tech demo looks amazing, a lot of gamers were disappointed when they witnessed the differences between the GDC2013 trailer of Elemental and its latest version. Global Illumination was nowhere to be found, something that had a huge impact on the demo’s visuals. As a result of that, a couple of gamers claimed that UE4 was in fact a step backwards and in order to calm everyone down, Epic’s rendering team leader has decided to shed some light."

Not a bad looking engine, but as always there are areas that current tech just can't seem to get right.
For example, the smoke. I've never seen a graphics engine that was able to make smoke look right.

Still, the fact that this demo took place on a single GTX 680 is pretty damn impressive. Speaks well for the card.

Smoke, water, and hair are some of the areas that still look poor in current generation games. I hope that we will finally see some significant improvement in these areas.

Skate-AK4781d ago

Don't forget trees. Trees in most games look bad.

I thought it already had DL and it was just GI that was missing? Well when they finally do implement DL/GI I want to see an updated verson of the PS4 demo.

"For example, the smoke."

I thought the effects in KZ:SF looked pretty damn good.

Well the fact that all that ran on a single GTX 680 speaks well for the engine more than the card.

UE3 also supports dynamic lighting. Ocean City Racing is one of the games that uses dynamic lighting

Fans??? This is done by one person

WoodsRatesGames1840d ago

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Gaming4Life19811840d ago

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

waverider1860d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1860d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1860d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1860d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1860d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1860d ago (Edited 1860d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1860d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1860d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Edit: i misread this.

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
