No, Your Game Does Not Need Microtransactions

EA's CFO may have recanted his previous statements about all of his company's future games including microtransactions, but it's still not clear that they get it. Just how detrimental to gaming can microtransactions be?

I remember when micro transactions were just for F2P games . O the good ol days

WildArmed4841d ago

I agree, but I can also see how it's become tough coping with $40million development cycles.

I can see a market for micro-transactions in gaming, but it needs to be tightly controlled. I dont mind having people pay for perk unlocks / gun unlocks early. This helps the devs/publisher, i'm fine with it.

The fact that someone paid to get the unlocks faster/earlier, shouldn't belittle your sense of achievement/fun.

Micro-transactions can go wrong if they pursue "exclusive" guns, ala P2W.

Skins for chars, guns, etc and clohtes etc. are fine. They are easy money and it doesn't hurt your game.

I think they work fine in single player games, people find some games hard and would literally pay a buck or two for better items.. instead of them resorting to cheating or getting a friend to do it. They can just pay the publisher.

I'm not saying it's a Godsend, I think it CAN work. It just depends on how well it's implemented. There is money to be had here, and if this keeps our games costs down, I think I'd be up for it.

They need to get the dev cycles in order, honestly. 40mil for a dev cycle is unacceptable.

@Above

A lot of it is just paying the staff decent wages thou.

10 people work on a game for 4 years?
lets say at 100k each

that's 4mil right there just for 10 people. And that's w/o taking into account the licensing fees for engines, the motion cap, the equipment (which can vary from 10ks to 100ks). The marketting, the IP costs, etc etc.

It's not as cheap as it used to be.

I kinda feel like the microtransaction stuff is kinda easy to avoid, there are always alternatives. I don't like the idea of microtransaction being in 60 dollar games, so I just don't purchase them, or in the case of something like Mass Effect 3 I just use the in game currency.

Show the publishers that Microtransactions aren't viable in this space, it will slowly disappear.

Remember when Cheat Codes existed? And they were free?

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4841d ago

Yea...I remember those. Good times. Tony Hawk's games had the best cheat codes.

GTA would like to have a word with you sir

Sidewinder-4841d ago (Edited 4841d ago )

Lol, nowadays:

Cheat code is found > Insta Patched.

Sell you cheat code as dlc.

Microtransactions are fine if the game is free to play, if I'm paying money out the gate the game better be complete.

Somebody4841d ago

Microtransanctions for regular non F2P games can work but only if they are treated as a separate component like regular multiplayer modes. Forcing it to be a big part of the singleplayer experience would just be a big scam.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

cue the apologist saying that these are mostly just contractors hired for this specific project bla bla bla

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee104d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
