Has Torchlight II Committed Commercial Suicide?

MMGN.com writes: Release day; a day where every developer, big or small, stays up all night watching the numbers roll in as they have an indication whether their latest project has been a success or failure. Did they do enough marketing? Is their brand strong enough? Was the timing right?

This is a great piece and raises a big question...Why would they release this the same week as Borderlands 2?

All of the marketing efforts put into Borderlands 2 will easily make people remember that it's coming out, while Torchlight 2 will quietly come out and put itself in danger of selling well.

I mean obviously over time, the game will do well but this feels like a missed opportunity and bad timing on their part to come out this week.

front page of steam, that is all.

Torchlight 2 is only $20. The game has enough hype and promotion that it will sell well. And don't forget that people have been pre-ordering this game for a long time now. A lot of people have been looking forward to this game, it's not going to get buried and by being a few days behind Borderlands 2 the game will catch people while they are already in a spending mood. For example, I am gameflying Borderlands 2 and with my discount it only costs me $40, with the other $20 I will buy Torchlight 2.

The timing is all wrong. They should have released this a month ago, not 2 days after Borderlands 2.

TopDudeMan5011d ago

I agree. The beginning of august would have been optimal. They're clashing pretty badly. I know a lot of people who are struggling with the decision of which to get.

scotchmouth5011d ago

Agree as well. I preordered it but its going to wait.... a long time. I am a bigger borderlands fan. Terrible timing

If Diablo 3 taught us anything than we should know that releasing this type of game before it is ready is a huge mistake. Sells for Diablo 3 are amazing, but the amount hatred it has received because it was rushed, despite 7 years of development, has completely tarnished the franchise.

Raider695011d ago

Yes a month ago and full of bugs right!By your mentality thats what shoud be happening!Every game shoud release when its ready!

majiebeast5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

They should have released this in the summer when everyone got fed up with Diablo 3's boring loot.

@NYC_Gamer: Dont agree with that alot of ppl who like traditional dungeon crawlers also like Borderlands including me.

NYC_Gamer5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

Not everybody does though.there is no proof that many fans of BL enjoy TL and vice verse.I'm buying TL2 because i'm not into BL.Then you have those who will buy both games.TL2 and BL2 could both do solid numbers.

NYC_Gamer5011d ago (Edited 5011d ago )

TL2 and BL2 both have different fan bases

Mirzelenee5011d ago

Exactly! I have no interest in Borderlands 2 since it's prequel bored me to death.

koehler835011d ago

It does seem like a very poor time to release but they did have that "Summer 2012" commitment to live up to. And it would only get worse as it gets closer to the end of the year.

They really should have pulled out all the stops to make sure it released in August and I'm afraid the delay will likely cost them some sales until the next drought some time next year, at which time they would be wise to have a Steam sale.

Personally I've had it pre-purchased since June or July and it's already pre-loaded on my PC (which again begs the question why it remains unreleased) so I'll get to it as soon as I have some time.. probably in like February.
