Firefall dev "checking out" Ouya, casts doubt on Microsoft and Sony's console future

Red 5's Kern personally backs Kickstarter, hopes for dev kit.

Outspoken ex-World of Warcraft lead and CEO of Firefall developer Red 5 Studios Mark Kern has railed against current consoles and remains skeptical of their successors, yet he's interested in developing for Ouya.

I keep seeing people 'doubt' the future of consoles but at the end of the day look at how well Kinect did, I'm using Kinect as an example because it's recent console related tech which has sold crap-loads. it's an example that consoles are still here and aren't going anywhere for a while.
Sure tablets / phones are making the mainstream move onto gaming but hell for gamers like myself who like to sit back in front of the TV and put the console on, you just don't get the same experience with a tablet/phone.

I suppose NextGen will be the real test for consoles but I for one will always back the console.

Being the "CEO of Firefall developer" he has every motive to cast "doubt" on consoles since his revenue streams aren't derived from it. In fact he wants to persuade you to think consoles have no future.

This is PR smack at it's finest, and it's sickening to see how they are painting themselves as the hip underdogs rooting for you.

Of course they are still here and will remain here for quite some time. That is where the investments are being made from companies like Microsoft and Sony who are willingly selling their hardware at a loss to entice gamers.

How can the PC really fight against such marketing? Then again that is the great thing about PC gaming and hopefully this new system. The fact that it isn't run by suits trying to corner the market and enticing gamers into a closed system.

No matter what these mobile,MMO,Casual devs and publishers say freemium is not the future. Its a nice option but a freemium game will probably never be as good as a 50$ boxed game. Only freemium game on my mind is Planetside 2 i tried Firefall and didnt like it.

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia2315d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE2347d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
