5 Ways Microsoft Horribly Botched E3 2012

From the PlanetPlaystation.com feature editorial:

"Admittedly, Microsoft had some tough competition this year. With Nintendo pulling through with a brand new console and Sony playing their hand tight—but leaking out quite a bit of intriguing information—the XBOX 360 didn’t have very much to contend with. However, even disregarding the competition, Microsoft botched up their presentation with a mediocre performance. Here are Microsoft’s five mistakes that made an average presentation terrible."

Sony def. won the pressers...

NastyLeftHook05023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

Yes, Sony and Ubisoft won for this years e3, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the watchdog demo as it was incredibly fresh and something demanding as it almost gave a hint into next gen.

And sony had much going on, But the two that stood out for me was The last Of Us, And Beyond Two Souls, Those titles were both original and unique (something the industry needs today)

LaurenKB1235023d ago

Ubisoft won E3 2012 by far; I would say that Star Wars 1313 game did but it was just a teaser, same with the Final Fantasy one...

EVILDEAD3605022d ago (Edited 5022d ago )

LMAO @ still throwing fanblogger pebbles at MS E3 conference 2 months later.

I love the hypocrisy after this year's E3 because almost ALL the supposed criticism as to why MS did sooo bad was even worse on the other stages.

Meaning if you are bashing Micrsoft then you are ALSO bashing Sony, Nintendo, AND Ubisoft.

1. MS wisely used Usher instead if the usual no-name dancers that were on the E3 stage the two games prior, to promote his role in the game by singing a current top 10 song in both the US & UK.

If you are pretending that THAT was so horrible, then you HAVE to bash Ubisoft for pening the show with Flo-rida (lol) and a buch of dancers for Just Dance 4. (And MANY people keep saying that Ubisoft won E3). I won't even go into the 'Sing' presentation for Wii-U.

2. If you are going to bash MS promoting Kinect with EA's two biggest sports titles, an Angry Birds type game, and Nike+ (which is in competition with Wii-U fit) then you HAVE to Bash Sony in a HUGE way for the Wonderbook presentation.

MS would have been ridiculed off of the planet EARTH had they had been the ones to show off Wonderbook. Skittles even laughed at how bad (not the game) but the E3 presentation of it was. But Sony amazingly got a straight pass.

3. If you are going to bash MS for 'relying on multi-plats' by showing off Black Ops 2 and Tomb Raider..then you have to bash Sony for showing off Assassin's creed 3 and Far Cry 3. plus it was Sony who actually promoted a special Assasin's creed PS3 at it's conference. If that's not relying on a multi-plat then I don't know what is.

Fanbloggers like the author can hate the games on the MS stage all day long, but the facts are MS had the #1 anticipated and biggest exclusive of 2012 on it's stage in Halo 4. Micrsoft also had the #1 franchise game in the entire industry on it's stage as well.

I'm not bashing Sony or any of the others, I'm simply pointing out that ALL of the conferences made the same supposed mistakes.

Everyone including the author has the right to his opinion, but IMO if those reasons are 'botching' E3, then MS needs to botch every one of their conferences..because the REAL winners of E3 will be determined when these games, tech, and hardware release this year and next.

Well Said EvilDead360

I walked away satisfied with both MS's and Sony's conferences. Both had some low points and both had some high points. But that was just ME, just because I wasn't a fan of 20 minutes of Wonderbook or 10 minutes of Usher doesn't mean that the message was lost that both MS and Sony were trying to relay.

MS's high points for me was Halo 4, Forza Horizon, Call of Duty.

MS's low point was Usher.

Sony's high points were The last of Us, AC III and Beyond 2 souls.

Sony's down points was wonderbook and Vita coverage.

However just because what I personally perceived as high points and low points doesn't mean that they were the same for others.

I am really looking forward to the last of us and Halo 4.

Can't wait.

Patriots_Pride5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

Yes! That Wonder Book was amazing!

Edit @ below : I agree Harry Potter is much cooler than Usher.

Relax dude I was just making a joke dont take it personal. The entire E3 this year sucked major @$$ and if it was not for WATCH DOG I would have probably found a new hobby.

LaurenKB1235023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

It was better than Usher... - and I agree it was a very "limbo" like E3, with everything on the horizon and nothing shown...plus don't buy that Battlefield 4 means no new consoles in 2013 BS; I can see a 2013 release for the next Xbox, but I could also see a Sept. 2014 release... we shall see...

Patriots_Pride5023d ago

@Lauren - I have had my 360 and PS3 since launch and I am 200% ready to move on to the next gen but if your prediction is correct and we wont see next gen consoles until 2014 then I am buying a Wii U : (

6 years in the tech world is dinosaur age...try using your 6 year old cell phone or 6 year old laptop now and tell me how it performs?

I really dont want to buy a Wii U but Sony and MS have giving me no option, it like they did not learn from the Wii and not taken the Wii U a serious competitor.

Both Microsoft and Sony botched E3 2012.
Ubisoft was the best at E3 and after them it was EA.

Jazz41085023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

Why are people hating on ms for having usher for dance central when ubisoft did the same thing with flo rider for just dance? Why does ubisoft get a free pass? Wonderbook was horrible and 20 minutes long. All three did bad with ubisoft showing the most intriquing lineup only because of watchdogs or was it Toby Turner? Las question this site is getting worse then msxbox reporting on playstation. Can't the sites just report on there own shows instead of a biased view on others. Like it would take a fanboy sites opinion on ms okay.

aviator1895023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

Honestly, I didn't think it was as bad as this article makes it out to be. I was disappointed, yes. However, I was disappointed with all three this year. The only one that really excited me was Ubisoft. They're doing an incredible job with their games.

Skateboard5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

How the F didn't the Sony press conference didn't impress you ? Not even a little ? LOL.

Last Of Us, Beyond Two Souls and ACIII Liberation on a HANDHELD was disappointing like Kinect /s.

Why can't people admit Sony is that damn good. Is it because Sony fans are dicks ?

Imagine if the roles was reversed and X-box was getting all the banging exclusives we are getting, LOL. They would talk so much ####.

Denial and Pride is they best friends. Last Of Us, Beyond Two Souls, GOW AS and AC III LB compared to Gears OF War, Halo 4, Kinect and Usher. Yeah I would say its a tie, LOLOLOLOLOLOLLOL

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9...

JBSleek5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

"Why can't people admit Sony is that damn good. Is it because Sony fans are dicks ?"

YES!! They are so annoying acting like Sony is the second coming and can't do any wrong. I would love to be a Sony fan but I swear their fans sell their souls and intellect. I swear they are a cult.

Besides Last of Us the games were alright didn't impress me as ACIII has been shown lots, GOW is the same formula but it isn't broke so I don't blame them and if Two Souls is anything like Heavy Rain I will be watching more than I am playing.

lastofgen5023d ago

It's called having an opinion. Are we supposed to admit to something that we don't agree on? Or maybe you'd rather just live in a world where your viewpoint is always correct and everyone else is wrong.

Seraphemz5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

JBSleek - "I played some devil's advocate but I had to these listed articles are usually riddled with flaws and slight fanboyism/hate" thats funny...so are your comments.

You listed 4 games in your defense below, when only ONE is an exclusive.
You defended Kinect when even 360 fans know that its SHEET and the games suck.
And I would assume MORE people are using the 360 as a gaming device since..IT IS. SO where are the GAMES???!!

Seraphemz5023d ago

What is this trend now with every other article being a list of " TOP X " or " X reasons ".. i mean damn... isnt there anything else to write?

Hicken5022d ago

There are plenty of other things to write about. But most gaming "journalists" don't have the skills to do more than make up a list about something or another.

tehpees35023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

They had Usher as a major part of the conference. And they ended how we expected them to start. Definitely the worst of the big 3. With one of their major big new IP announcements being..... Nike. Nike. NIKE?

lastofgen5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

Yeah, and that seriously dull drawn-out WonderBook showing was just so spectacular....

Edit: Well, looking at all the disagrees, I'm guessing that the majority of the people here love wonderbook...
Honestly, if you found wonderbook to be a winner, I honestly don't see how so many people can bash microsoft for showing a few kinect titles at their e3. They're catering to the consumers (10 million+) that have already bought kinects, the same thing that sony is doing with wonderbook. What's so wrong in that?

/s

HarryMasonHerpderp5023d ago (Edited 5023d ago )

I admit wonderbook was crap but that was the
only bad game at Sony's conference.

Microsoft's was the poorest of the big 3.
It was just same old same old, no surprises filled with kinect/sports/casual crap and usher.

Seriously it was painful to watch.

BitbyDeath5022d ago

I think Wonderbook was pretty cool, but you probably need kids to really appreciate it.

cstyle5023d ago

So what..Microsoft uses celebrities to sell just like sony(kevin Butler). Singer or actor, it makes no difference. Or do you guys actually think KB loves Playstation or that is his real name.

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle4d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit4d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog4d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog4d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad4d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_4d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage4d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Xbox Game Pass ‘has become too expensive,’ says Microsoft’s new gaming chief in leaked memo

Microsoft’s new Xbox chief, Asha Sharma, has signaled that Xbox Game Pass pricing is about to change. In an internal memo to Xbox employees, obtained by The Verge, Sharma admits that “Game Pass has become too expensive for players” and that Microsoft needs “a better value equation.”

Microsoft has been talking about adding commercials to get the cost down. Not in game, but before you start a session. I would just open my game then get all the stuff I need to done, before sitting down to play.

If they cut the price down enough to justify it, I'd do it. Most Sub services are giving the option now. If it's worth it!

blacktiger4d ago

no moron! commercial will be in every loading and in game for further opportunity.

shadowfax334d ago

user calling other user moron and gets upvoted....wow how toxic N4G has become.

jwillj2k44d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Multiple tiers. You decide at what level you want the ads. Obtrusive gives you access to more games. This will allow ads to play during crucial moments of gameplay, almost guaranteeing you fail/die. However you gain access to more games. Unobtrusive only shows ads before/after you play, however you get a fraction of the games. /s

peppeaccardo4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

FUK ads ... dont u have enough? MS should just make games and sell them, for indie or AA games get them on GP so to give visibility to small studios. They got into a business model which is not sustainable as it is killing their first party studios. Their fault .. .

Jingsing4d ago

You do realize that has been one of the big reasons for the mass exodus of people leaving subscription services. Getting ad's while paying for a service and having the price continually jack up and ad time.

thorstein4d ago

Why would they cut the cost to you?

GotGame8184d ago (Edited 4d ago )

What you said is not what I saw. What I read said at THE START of a session! Why be a jerk? It isn't like, I was intentionally lying, like so many do! Also, commercials will be an OPTION! Just like Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc, offer them. GP is also aiming for free Cloud gaming with an AD supported tier.

I mean, do you even use GP? If you do and don't want commercials, you can pay not to have them. I in my OG comment said I might go the commercial tier IF it's worth it. No I wouldn't have all my loading screens be an ad like you said.
Have a great day.

BlaqMagiq14d ago

I will never understand why people want forced ads in their faces in their games or their console. It's never worth it not even with a lower price tier.

CornholioX4d ago

Ads are the virus that needs to be removed!!

Microsoft owns a massive collection of iconic IPs, yet somehow they keep proving they have absolutely no idea how to run the video game business.

Reaper22_4d ago

Its not their job to run the game business. Everyone has a business model. You do what works for you. You react to changes in the market. Thats really all you can do.

Smellsforfree4d ago

No, actually reacting to the market is how Sony threw $400 million (reportedly) at Concord.

__y2jb4d ago

“Its not their job to run the game business” - a new low in the blind defense of Xbox.

Alek834d ago

Interesting, isn't it?

Halo, Forza, Gears of War, Fable, Minecraft, and now Bethesda games... These should allow them to print money!

hiawa233d ago

Especially selling them to the huge Playstation base. I say add Nintendo to the release schedule if it is truly about selling software. Get the games to the most gamers.

hiawa234d ago (Edited 4d ago )

But, Microsoft heads set the price in the first place. Don't scapegoat Phil and Sarah on that as I don't think made those calls, and a $650 Series X and $400 Series S is a nonstarter for most.

Extermin8or3_4d ago

The cost of the consoles is outside of their control, they aren't going to sell at a loss when they aren't making money off games sales cos xbox players hardly buy any games thanks to games pass, which costs far too much to run and make the first party titles for. The console prices are determined by various global factors effecting hardware atm.

Eonjay4d ago

This is actually correct and what made things harder for Phil and Sarah was Amy hood demanding a 20% return on top of that

hiawa233d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I get all of the outside forces here on console pricing. They aren't selling at all which was also one of the reasons they went multi-plat, so there seems to be no answer here for them as are you saying a 5 year old Xbox costs you more to make in 2026 than in 2020? If that is the case there is nothing further to say. I have two Series Xs so I hope they last.

Extermin8or3_3d ago

@hiawa23 yes that is exactly what I'm saying same for ps5. Remember these devices would have been finalised 208/2019. They were designed during a period of particularly low hardware and rare earth materials etc. They aren't designed to be efficient and are large and have large heat footprints. Both new consoles will benefit from new manufacturing process reducing amounts of silicon although the leaks about next gen xbox strongly suggest it has a much larger chip set than ps6, in line with average pc chips etc size and cooling. All of this now costs alot more than it has previously. Meanwhile leaked documentation about ps6 explicitly states that Sony following recent global shocks like covid and Ukraine war wanted to future proof ps6 from cost perspective. This means lower emergy usage, smaller chips etc and likely form factor and thus weight. This will also lead to cheaper shipping costs. I fully expect base ps6 to come in at cheaper then ps5 pro. Which is likely to be discontinued.

Eonjay4d ago

Well it seems like the rumor of COD leaving GP is real.

Jingsing4d ago

They'll probably just end up killing off the surviving Xbox users who are left and that are into that model. They won't regain the vast majority they lost either.

yep agree 100% ... and some more. The hype machine is warming up and the performance numbers sheet will be filled in no time to guarantee that the winner on paper is revealed way before the launch day ... BUT as we all know only 1st party games and brand idenity will declare the real winner. Only problem is the price tag needed to get into next gen ...

SIdepocket7d ago

Just what the world needs: another poorly-selling console.

Agent757d ago

Next gen will be a massive failure for Microsoft and Sony, you could say it's already started. Game sales at an all-time low and the high cost of consoles and controllers, the PlayStation 5 Pro is the first indication on the pricing of next gen consoles and that's been a sales flop for Sony. Some people will say that people are paying eye watering prices for PCs, but that's an entirely different market, what I call OCD gaming. As I mentioned in another post, the PlayStation 5 Pro here sells for just under £800, which is just over $1000, games can top £75 ($100), including Switch 2 games. Some of us would like to see a single format, but that'll never happen. Microsoft and Sony would laugh at the idea of stepping off the gas pedal with the tech and do what Nintendo has done with the Switch 2. Three hybrid consoles fighting against each other, basically taking current tech and adding a few bells and whistles. Who's up for a PlayStation 6 for $999 and $99 games? Let me know in the comments.

Reaper22_7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

The simple solution is dont buy what you cant afford. You dont have to move on just because the companies do. If people want better hardware and better games theyre gonna be more expensive. People need to be content with what they have.

rlow16d ago

You know a lot of those sales are dads and moms buying for their kids and teens. Consoles have alway been a reasonable price to a degree. But you start heading far north of $500, I don’t see as many parents buying for their kids or teens……will it still sell? Yes but will it sell a hundred million or more…..that’s the real question. Hopefully ram prices drop.

derek6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

@Agent75 There is no need to lie to make your point. The ps5pro is selling as a percentage about as well as the ps4pro. The recent pssr2 update has actually improved its value. Your attempt to group the ps5 a console (that is about to cross 100 million sold and is by far Sony's most profitable generation) with the abject failure that is xbox is laughably stupid. Truth is Sony shouldn't even consider launching another console until 2029 at the earliest.

StoneTitan6d ago

Everyone except you knows the pro is a profit machine that is why its expensive.
Ps6 will not be even close to it in price

rlow16d ago

What happens if ram prices remain high? Do you think Sony or MS would eat those costs? Depends on how much they would have to absorb.
